I didn't shed a tear and for the life of me, I can't figure out why he was considered a musical icon. Other than being a member of the "Beatles" and marrying that twit YOKO, what were his noteworthy accomplishments?????????

I met her at O’Hare once. Well, not exactly met, she tried to bump me off a flight ‘cause her’s was canceled. What a conceited, snot-bitch, she was, too. Her, uh, traveling companion tried to intimidate me even. LOL

They all had some differing degree of success post-Beatles but their whole was better than their parts. (hardly an original thought, I do admit!)

IMHO, one of the gaps in the Beatles collection is an album of cover songs. I would have loved to hear their voices on rock, R&B and vocal standards of the 40's and 50's. If they had done so, they might have stayed together longer as a band, as there would not have been the pressure to write the songs. They probably could have come up with some great sounding stuff in a couple weeks in the studio.
Despite his leftism and atheism, it's too bad he died so young. I think he would have fit right in with the 90's grunge movement. Eventually there would have been some kind of a Beatles reunion; it would not have had the magic of the 60's, but it would have been fun nonetheless.
In the end, John's fatal flaw was the leftist's inability to recognize the evil in human nature. When talking about how he and Yoko strolled around NYC without bodyguards, he said something like, "Oh, they're just fans, they don't want to hurt you."
John was great when he had a check on his songwriting excesses (a tendency toward navel-gazing and overwroughtness) by Paul. When he went Plastic Ono on us, it was all downhill (same goes for Paul with Wings).

In the past, I felt the same. I gobbled up Beatles albums like candy, and even replaced some with CD's, John Lennon's leftism notwithstanding.
However, it should be noted that John, unlike the leftist performers of today, largely stayed out of partisan politics. Yes, he became an opponent of the Viet Nam war, but that was him jumping on the bandwagon. Even after he got his green card, and thus could be as outspoken as he wanted, I don't recall him campaigning against Reagan.
These days you get performers avowedly supporting Kerry, 0bama. IMHO, if you buy a leftist's product, you are making a de facto contribution to the DNC.
