The Untold Story of the Civil War
Jackson Jambalaya ^ | December 2, 2008 | Kingfish

Posted on 12/02/2008 6:57:32 AM PST by prplhze2000

came across an article from an old issue of U.S. News & World Report commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Civil War. What was interesting was that it compared the treatment of the South for decades after the war's end to the millions of dollars and additional support given to Germany and other European countries through the Marshall plan and concluded the South's fate was a drag on the rest of the country as it remained the poorest section of America by far.....

U.S Treasury agents streamed through the South in 1865 grabbing cotton, land, anything that they claimed to have been the property of the Confederacy. They took cotton valued at $30 million. Behind them came hordes of carpetbaggers (With the Wall Street Journal's blessing I'm sure. They'll invent some economic theory to justify it while professing to hate the looters in Atlas Shrugged) from the North to drain away any Southern Capital they could lay hands on..."

The Southern steel industry, doing a booming business in 1900, was virtually stopped in its track, Southerners said, by a rate structure imposed by the North. The rates required payment of price differentials so sharp that it became cheaper for an industry in New Orleans to buy steel from Pittsburgh than from Birmingham. Not until World War II were changes made in this system."

Such policies created a region so poor and under-educated that FDR called the South the "nations number one economic problem" in 1938...

They left and formed their own nation. The federal fort should have been abandoned by the now-then foreign USA.

Why? It belonged to the U.S.

War was the remedy the confederacy chose.

The South chose seccession, the North chose war.

true Becky very true

how many times have people heard them coming down here and then going on about their beloved north, they don’t like the food, the accents, the way of life is too slow, the flags especially

well tough for them I would love to see them go back who do not want to adjust to the south.

My wife is from Boston and she too even says that many northerners who come down here are rude, obnoxious and arrogant.
She classes herself as an adopted southern gal and is proud of it.

she has met people who had ancestors lose their land, had their land taken away from them.
If the north whites could not have voted for over 10 years but blacks could, if they had their lands, farms, houses taken from them , if they had their women raped and boys killed , if they had seen their towns and cities destroyed and the cattle killed they too would feel some injustice.
If they had known their ancestors were killed just because they sung dixie, did not salute Lincoln, and had armed soldiers raping and pillaging then they too would not have the attitude they do now.

they say get over it, well why should southerners get oer it, they honor their ancestors and the flag they flew under and yes most liberals who hate the flag does not even know what the battle flag was made for or what the confederacy flags look like

thank you

I have just had a two day debate with a poster about this.

they stated that no one on the south lost their lands which I know they did according to records .

must be nice to live in la la land for some.
how I wish history was taught in the north, hell I lived up there for a bit and even ion Boston they think it was revere who warned the people were coming
biggest difference I found form living up there and down here is that down here they are more knowledgeable about the war between the states

many stories like that, many slaves and union soldiers would rape the women and rob the homes as there was no men about anymore.

It is estimated that the south lost two generations because of the war, by the time the north got to the south they were fighting 60 year old men and 10 year old boys plus women.

as for carpetbaggers not coming down here anymore, then that is not true as it is till goes on today here in north florida .

The South chose seccession, the North chose war.

Bombarding Sumter for two days and trying to kill every man in there is not a peaceful act. It was an act of war, the act which caused the conflict that followed. Like I said, what happened to the South was self-inflicted.

they are
go to websites like city data which masks itself as a relocation site giving advice.
it is run by mostly liberals who bring liberals to certain areas.
they are now trying to target north Florida where I ma with their carpetbagging land developers and housing associations, they are looking at VA,NC
from the west they are looking at NM,AZ,CO from CA,WA,OR

all the more to fly our flag and let them know they are down here and we will not go with their liberal crap agenda.
saw a great bumper sticker the other day and it said, if the north is so great go back then .
or
I95 north is that way now go

Did you read it easier enough?

I have lived up north, lived down south and yes it is mind blowing to see so many up their own ass, arrogant folk with no idea about history.

Here is a simple solution for those who do not like the flags, the facts or anything to do with the south.
Don’t come down.

After living up north I have no plans ever to go there ever again, I hate it.

and both of the Bush's are actually Maine carpetbaggers!

Neither was born in Maine. President Bush 41 was born in Mass. President Bush 43 in Conn. 41 came to Texas in his 20's, 43 when he was 4 years old. Good enough for me.

Reading the comments on this subject, there appears to be sentiment for AND against The South. Healthy discussions are one thing; however, there does seem to be some of the elitist and “holier-than-thou” attitude that we criticize in Libs. There some things that all can agree on: 1. Civil War is a terrible thing: 2. there does come a time when principles must be defended and 3. we are Americans first, then whatever you want. That said, the time for a principled stand is near. Each of us will have to decide whether it is worth it. I have made my decision. Let's leave it at that.

I could care less what you forgive and forget. Just remember that the war, and all the death and destruction that the South suffered, was self inflicted. Bear that in mind and you'll find it easy to understand why I have no sympathy for you. Any more than I have for the Iraqis or the Germans or the Japanese.

Bear in mind why we have no sympathy for your car industry, moving steel jobs overseas, bank failures etc. Why we don't care if you freeze in the dark. We do care about all the liberal a$$holes you send to Congress.

I spent a number of years down South and I can say the same thing. A trait that continues among many of the Southern supporters around here.

After living up north I have no plans ever to go there ever again, I hate it.

Our loss is also our gain, I guess. As for me, I have no hatred for the South. I was stationed there for many years while in the military and I liked it well enough. The people were OK. Nobody treated me badly or anything like that. But it also holds no attraction for me and I don't see any reason to visit anywhere down there again, much less move there. So you can rest easy that this is at least one Yankee you don't have to worry about bumping in to.

And I guess we'll just have to live with your lack of sympathy, and somehow we'll manage to carry on. I do wish you'd keep your politicians out of the White House, though.

It’s been a while. We haven’t had a good Civil War thread in months.

LOL, instead of acting like conservative countrymen looking back upon a national tragedy, we often take the sides of our fore bearers and just re fight old issues. Communication and shared dialog leading to understanding is often missed and we barrage each other with an avalanche of contentions. So if that is "a good Civil War thread" we are starting out just right.

I am reading a good book that deals with some of the issues we take opposing sides on frequently in these threads. It deals with the border war in Kansas and Missouri, primarily, and looks at jay hawkers, Quantrill, Fremont, Oklahoma Civilized Tribes, the breakdown of the Compromise and the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the understanding of the extension of slavery into the territories that were expected to become states as the settled that was so well understood as an independent issue at the time, the rise of the Republican Party, Senator Atchison's ascendancy over Benton, and all the causes and results of the fighting that took place long before Sumter and early battles that were ignored though contemporaneous with First Mannassus / Bull Run.

The book is Civil War on the Western Border, 1854-1865 by Jay Monaghan. It was originally published in 1955 but was overshadowed by books and works on the eastern conflicts. Canton was generous in his praise at the time.

Bison Books reprinted it in '85 and there is a current reprinting out as linked above.

Now this book is not without its weaknesses but it is appreciated by readers in the northern and southern camps. Being born in Kansas City, growing up in Johnson County, Kansas and being schooled in Lawrence at KU, this is a story that I have grown up with and read some other works on over the years. I have found some good insight here that while slim on the footnotes does have a chapter by chapter sources citation that shows the scholarship was done to the standards of the time.

My great-great grandfather was reportedly associated with John Brown and his great grandfather was the largest slaveowner in the western hemisphere. So I have an appreciation for all sides in our history.

...for when lenity and cruelty play for a kingdom, the gentler gamester is the soonest winner.

I this this quote is lost on you but it wasn't for Lincoln or FDR.
