“Do you know for sure they did not receive welfare and medicaid”
Yes, because the The Food Stamp Act and Welfare Program wasn’t started until 1964 and Medicaid wasn’t started until 1965.
Since they moved to Indonesia in 1966, she couldn’t have been on them for long.
Actually HI was one of the first states that took part in a pilot project of a food stamp program which began in 1959 and was officially operational by 1964. Ann was kind of ineligible for it then since she was living with her parents on University Ave then, unless she arrived back in HI in late 1962 and moved into the apt on Alexander St and applied for the food stamps THEN moved in with her parents on Kamehameha Ave.in 1963 before the whole family moved to the home on University Ave. This could also explain why when Maxine Box sent Ann an invitation to her wedding it was returned stamped “adress unknown”. Was Ann scamming the system? The above info was found under the history of the food stamp program for HI on their website.
Look up public assistance 1960. Or public assistance healthcare 1960. There was a program for indigents.

They didn't have Welfare or Food Stamps as we know it today, but they did have Public Assistance. They paid your rent directly to the landlord and sent you a check for food and miscellaneous needs.
