How many times have you been at the supermarket and seen some outrageously HIGH price for some produce? I see this all the time so am I somehow forced to buy it? Of course not. In fact, it is VERY EASY to bargain shop for produce. Possibly easier than for any other type of product. However, when a DUmmie sees a cantelope selling for an $3.89 each, he helplessly bemoans his fate as you can see in this THREAD with the pitiful title of "Cantelope $3.89 a piece? F*ck, we'll be carrying sacks on a stick and begging at the back doors of the 'haves' pretty soon!" Yes, DUmmie, you have NO choice. You MUST buy that $3.89 cantelope. You are forbidden to look for cantelops at other stores or buy them roadside or at farmer's markets for a buck or less each. So let us now watch the DUmmies use their utter incompetence at bargain shopping as a segue to condemn our EVIL capitalist system in Bolshevik Red while the commentary of your humble correspondent, who recently bought a whole bunch of HUGE papayas for just a buck each, is in the [brackets]:

A crappy bagel costs $.69 and a crappier muffin is $1.49 at the supermarket. A 16 oz can of soup is $2.19...for broth and a few pieces of pasta. Brown rice is $1.79 lb and bread and milk are near $4.00. Why are we not taking to the streets with this? I despise this administration. DESPISE them. I hope they pay in hell.

Looked at Watermelons, yesterday...........small ones - $6.99 and less small ones (can't call them big, really - $7.99. Last year you could get them for $4.99 and they were huge......insane....

The junk food aisle prices are cheap. Hell, a 16 oz bag of imitation chocolate candy $.89. Twinkies are still cheap enough. Why not buy em by the case?

Truth be told, I'm one of these idiotf*cks who thinks Trader Joe's is economical, so clearly I haven't "gotten it" in many years.

I got hostile in the toilet paper section.......... ...12 roll pack of my usual brand - $8.76. Screw that - it goes down the crapper, ferchrissakes, I'll be damned if I pay that. Family will have to get used to flimsy I guess. Meat aisle should have a loan counter right next to it so I can take out a mortgage to get some damn chops..... Milk - hell, a few bucks more and I could get a dang cow..... eggs - do we have a shortage of laying hens? I hate to go to the grocery store anymore - it seems these days we'll have the same menu rotation week after week - but I guess we're lucky to still be able to eat something.
[Maybe your family will have to get used to using their left hands. BTW, I have a food deal where I get meat, beer, olive oil, and paper products really cheap. (My wife doesn't want me to talk about it in detail.) Right now we have enough toilet paper and paper kitchen towels to last us until around Labor Day.]
We're living on split pea soup, lentil soup, rock soup...whatever. Yeah, the toilet paper thing is sickening. Better off using a pressure cleaner.

I haven't had canteloupe for years based on the price. Only when they sell them at 2 for $3.00. And this is MacIntosh apple country. Cripes, they are $3.49 lb.

wolfgang puck soup is almost always on sale for $1-$1.25/can, and it definitely is MUCH better than "some broth and a few pieces of pasta".

2.67 for store brand soup. Use to be $4 for 2 a few weeks ago. Juice is insane. God damn f*cking eggs. Shopping has become depressing. God damn Bush Inc and the enablers.

I love the smell of fresh ground coffee. The wife has a small grinder and buys whole coffee beans every once in a while. Smelling that make me want coffee no matter what time it is, even though I don't drink coffee after noon.
We live in a rural town (Rochelle, IL) and Sam’s Club is 30+ miles away in Rockford. It would mean going well out of our way. So we do with super Wal-Mart.
Some of what you described I consider household items; others, clothing. I do my budgeting on Quicken and separate that from groceries. There’s just the two of us, I’m retired, but the wife works. I do most cooking. We buy in some bulk (food...when we have the room) and I use one of those food sealers.
As you say, it’s a little work, but worth it when you consider the savings.

A lot of Sam’s Clubs converted over to being Super Walmarts. What was up with that? I’m not complaining because it saves me having to pay a membership fee for basically the same service.
In my locale, at least, "Target" cleans WalMart's clock on darn near everything I shop for. It's mostly drygoods - diapers, TP, laundry detergent, etc but I've started to get some groceries there too.
Regular prices are usually -not always, but usually - a little better than WM's. Sale prices are usually a LOT better, and with coupons on top of it, I really save money. Target continuously sends me coupons in the mail (I get them at least every other week) because I got on some mailing list or other of theirs.
I've not been to Sam's in several years, so I can't comment on their prices. I *have* been to Costco recently, and quite frankly, Target's Sale Prices have them beat, too.

Don't know. We belonged to Sam's Club in Rockford many years ago. But it was too out of the way for us to make much use of it. So we let the membership lapse. Then, when Wal-Mart in DeKalb converted to a super store, we began shopping there.
Our local Wal-Mart was supposed to be converted to a super store. Building was actually under way. but the land was found to have a high water table and excavation created a bunch of little lakes (no kidding). Construction has now stopped, and Wal-Mart is now expanding their food area in the existing building. But I've also heard that the super store may yet happen sometime in 2010.
It was no secret that was lowland they were building on. It was farmland just on the East side of town, between town & I39 1 1/2 miles East. A few motels had been built on it, and a Wendy's & BP/Amoco, all which needed a lot of land fill before they could be built. I think Wal-Mart missed just how much fill would be required for a project that size.
I’ll pass that on. Target is just down the road from Wal-Mart in DeKalb. But this one doesn’t have groceries. I’m sure of that. The wife does the shopping so she’ll have to check it out. Thanks!
When it comes to groceries (no produce), Target is just a "This or That" type store. They have nowhere near the selection of the grocery store that I like to shop at, but if they have the stuff I'm looking for at a better price, well, who cares?
Oddly enough there is a Super Target just a few blocks from me but I haven't been there since I moved in here last summer. BTW, do Targets have fee free cashback on debit purchases. That is one reason why I go to Walmart. To buy stuff and get cash back on my PayPal card.
I *do* know that the Target Store "RedCard" Credit/Debit card isn't worth a whole lot to me. Make a whole lot ($1000? $2000?) of purchases, and you get a 10% off shopping trip. Since I rarely drop more than $100 a trip there, and I already have a "rewards" plan with my bank....I haven't bothered with it. I suppose if I spent more money there or was planning a big purchase, it might be worthwhile.
I also just like shopping at Target more. The couple that are close to where I live/work are pretty well managed - clean, neat, easy to park at & get around, and well stocked (that's the other big sell for me...nothing frustrates me more than driving to a store for something specific and having them be out!).
Again...I won't turn this into a WM bashing thread, but all of the WM's near me are, in general, the opposite of what I descibed. Add that to the fact that Target has them usually beat on pricing, and it's a no-brainer for me.
Our super Wal-Mart in DeKalb is clean, but parking is a real hassle. With my health issues, I can’t park way out in the lower 40 & walk so I rarely go there. The one in town is no big deal. I’m there often. In a small town like ours, it gets a lot of traffic.
A lot of people tend to trash Wal-Mart because of the perceived damage they’ve done to small-town America. I don’t. We still have a lively downtown area. And a lot of locals have found employment at Wal-Mart. No, you can’t earn a large wage there, but for a second income it’s alright. I don’t know of anyone in our town who’s unhappy with their presence.

Thats the reason they don’t know anything about bargain shopping. While us working schmucks were bargain shopping all these years, they were freely spending foodstamps without paying any attention to the cost. Now the foodstamps are not going as far and the DUmmies are just now discovering the higher prices.
Some idiot called into Rushs’ show awhile back and said that the oil companies got together with Nixon and Reagan and got Stephen King to bump off John Lennon because he would have been able to stop the War on Terror if he had lived. I think that had to be the winner for the DUmbest of all conspiracy theories.
We buy beef on the hoof and take it to the slaughter house to be processed. It winds up about 2.00 a pound for everything, steaks and all. And we buy bulk meat at the slaughterhouse, too. They have chicken, pork, and all kinds of processed foods like bacon and sausage etc. much cheaper and better than the grocery store.
I paid 22.62 for a Lexmark 1 Print Cartidge at WalMart today. Next time you are in Target, please check out what the price is for the same item.
Great idea on the use for shower caps. I bought 3 packs of 4 for a dollar at Dollar Tree and had no idea how to use them all. I am still using the first one for a shower cap. Thay last forever.
They really must buy food at those convenience stores.
