Would McCain beat Obama or Hillary?
Mac's Mind ^ | Feb. 08, 2008

Patrick Ruffini says McCain can ram the hell out of Obama at the polls on November 2nd.

“‘I’m beginning to think Obama might be the easier candidate for McCain to beat. Why? Because there could be no clearer contrast on the Commander-in-Chief test.”

Actually I think Mickey Mouse could be Obama on the COC test, but that’s not the point. Those who are supporting McCain are - after selective amnesia on his record - doing so only because they see him beating Hillary or Obama in November.

Well duh! Of course that the task, but the fact remains that right now with Democrats out voting Republicans 2-1 and raising more enthusiasm and money, it’s not likely McCain at this point beats either, regardless of the wishful thinking.

Look, we’re all concerned with the GWOT and judges and taxes and other conservative issues. I’ve pointed out, as have people like Bob Novak have also pointed out, that McCain offers no guarantee that he would select totally Alito judges, and in fact would most likely find consensus nominees (O’Connor, Souter).

Again, time for that gut check, where are your principals. Those who had to drink a gallon of Pepto Bismal every time they thought of McCain six months ago are singing his praises today. As I said yesterday, all that shows is a lack of intestinal fortitude worthy of the flip-flop charge hurled at John Kerry four years ago.

Standing on principals instead of personality politics, is what the Reagan Revolution is all about.

UPDATE: David Limabugh to critics of the critics of McCain - “Chill out!

“McCain isn’t winning a majority of Republicans, much less conservative ones, and is relying heavily on Democrat crossovers and independents, not to mention a little help from his friends Mike Huckabee and the mainstream media.

It’s easy for moderates to argue that critics of moderates are extreme. That’s what moderates always say. They have been complaining about conservatism since I was wearing a “Goldwater for President” T-shirt.

They’ve said for years that the only way Republicans can win elections is to move to the center. Their opinion is not based on convincing data but wishful thinking. History is not their friend. Republicans win big with conservative ideas, provided they have inspiring candidates. Moderate ideas dilute the message and deflate the movement, zapping it of its verve and enthusiasm.”

Amen, and I’ll have move on this “takeover” later.

My husband and I have been having this argument. Personally I believe McCain will be skewered by the MSM within the next month. He’ll be portrayed as the old white guy, weak on immigration, weak on taxes, they’ll trot out the Keating Scandel and before it’s over he’ll blow his temper and give them more fun. They’ll even show his temper through events like when he told Senator Cornyn from TX to “F*** O**” over immigration.

It seems we have a winner. That would be a bull's-eye Ptaz.

Republican primaries and caucuses did not have much Democrat crossover.

McCain won the Liberal 35% of the Republican base fair and square.

But that’s the problem: He won a very low plurality of liberal Republicans in liberal states that we won’t carry in the general election.

So there you go: Republicans whose votes NEVER elect a Republican president chose a candidate (McCain) whom most Republicans can’t stand.

Remember this: The VAST MAJORITY of Republicans voted for someone other than McCain.

Anything can happen, but given the split in the GOP over McCain I’d say the election is the Democrats to lose.

On the other hand, the media which has been holding him up will return to the Democrats and McCain will be ripped to shreds.

I would love to be a fly on the wall in McCain's "war room" when the Drive-Bys start pummeling him. "What's going on??? These guys LOVE me! Why won't Tim Russert return my calls??? It's those damned conservatives again! I hate them!!! Where are my strawberries??? Huh??? HUH????"

Would McCain beat Obama or Hillary?

Does it matter? Either way, we'll have a socialist lib in the white house.

The MSM has chosen the President. Election over.

.The good old boy Washington insider Republicans had a hand in it too. They gave us Dole in '96 and now McCain in 2008. They may even prefer being in the minority, going to all the best parties and being "loved." Dummies.

but let me remind you Romney haters, the vast majority on FR voted, at one time, 69 to about 6 for Romney near the final days.

And that was ONLY after Fred Thompson was run off by the MSM. Fred was hitting above 75% among FR members while Mitt was at 8.7%.

Roughly 98% of your 69% rating consisted of FREDHEADS.

Fred Dalton Thompson was the great loss to this Nation, not Mitt.

McPain may satisfy the left wing of the Republican party, but let us not forget who elected the best president of the twentieth century.

Democrats voted for Ronald Reagan in swarms. My parents voted for a Republican those years. A conservative will win the general election whenever the Republicans get desperate enough to offer one.

True the press will savage McCain but he is strong in a few ways.

If Hillary is the dems pick then McCane stacks up fairly well.
Hillary is a low turnout 45% candidate. The old ladies like McCain and many will flip to his side.

Elderly people vote and they don’t vote for the radical they vote for the soothing person.

The Mexican vote will help McCain in AZ,NV,TX,NM and others. This was McCains main reason for the whole immigration idea.

We need to look at the 10% of the voters that flip from Dem to GOP in the last few weeks before a election. These people do not look at things like we do.

Many, many people in the squishy middle might go for McCain as a “safe” vote. It’s too bad that the MSM will be painting McCain as a unstable fire ball waiting to explode.

He will get Borked.

Obama will bring in the 30 year old voter in large numbers and there is no way we could win with some old dude like McCain.

McCain now looks like he is our nominee. It should only be a few hours until the MSM turns on him.

What do you think they will start with? I guess they call him a lier first, then stupid, his collage grades which were low.

Let me first state that I am NOT a McCain supporter.

That being said, I think McCain beats either of the two.

I believe with all of my heart that a lot of Obama’s “support” is artificial.

In my opinion, he is getting tons of votes from white men who would normally vote GOP in the general. There were a group of states in the primaries with open tickets, meaning one could vote for any candidate in either party. My thinking is that they voted for Obama simply to keep Hillary off of the ticket. I remember hearing on the evening of Super Tuesday that an unexpected amount of white men were voting for Obama. If that is true, it works with my theory.

With that theory, it seems to me that the majority of those men will vote for the “republican” in the general election.

I will vote for the republican on the November ticket, as long as he and his VP selection are BOTH pro-life.

Now that the MSM has tee'd him up, they will swing for the fences.
Would be amazed if McQueg pulls this off without a base.

I think MSM will wait until McCain has the nomination sewed up before they attack. If what they bring out about McCain is bad enough, the Republicans might be able to select another candidate at the convention and they wouldn’t want that to happen.

And that was ONLY after Fred Thompson was run off by the MSM.

Let me remind you that I was a Thompson hopeful until he left. Then there was no choice but Romney and as I listened to all the spinning and lack of understanding of Romney in a far left liberal State, I was totally convinced that the party, without a few hard heads, would have the conservative vote rather than McNut.

No. Big Mac doesn’t have a chance.

Only RP can win against the Dems. There’s a huge anti-war movement on the left. This is where the RP views on the war can pay off big time. Both Dem candidates are pro war. Many Dems have switched to RP already just due to this issue.

I’ve always considered myself a conservative Republican. When GW started ruling like a Dem and the GOP bought into big government, I stopped caring. Now they have a liberal running against liberals. There is no difference between the parties. I’ll vote for RP, but not for McCain. Never, ever, ever will I again vote for the lesser of two evils. What you get stuck with is still evil.

He won more votes than the others, who both are far more liberal that McCain in spite of the talking points spewed by pinhead talk radio folks and their supporters.

4.7 Million votes to 4 Million votes is NOT a minor plurality my friend.. he’s gotten 20% more of the votes.

THe problem with the mentality many here are espousing is that they assume, incorrectly, that most of those 4 Million that didn’t go to McCain would not vote for him in the general... a very very WRONG assumption. Especially when they already have shown they will vote for a guy who’s about as liberal/moderate as they come... Both Mitt and Huck are not remotely conservative in their governing record.

I hate to break it to you, but conservative voters NEVER elect a president, nor do Liberal voters....
These both represent bases, but the elections are won and lost by the swing voters.

Welcome aboard.

There’s a huge anti-war movement on the left. This is where the RP views on the war can pay off big time.

The war is not the top issue right now; it most certainly will be an even lesser issue by November. And by November, as the war continues to improve, it may actually be a detriment to oppose it.

Paul's views on the war are the very reason he is NOT doing well with Republicans.

And if he wants to win the votes of democrats perhaps he should have ran as a democrat.
