Is This the Year for Third Party Candidates?
All American Blogger ^ | January 29, 2008 | Duane Lester

I have a feeling that this year is going to be much different than most election years. I think this year, there will be a few more candidates than just the Democrats and the Republicans. And I’m not talking a third party, but a fourth, fifth and possibly sixth.

Its too late for 3rd party candidates to play a part in the presidential election. However state and local elections are always a good starting point.

I am thinking it is a good year just for a party period before one of the schmucks on either side take office...

Oy Vey...

Probably so. Neither major party is likely to run someone not for abortion and gay marriage.

It would help them if they didn’t nominate a loon.

The two real alternative parties are Constitution and Libertarian. They both have the misunderstanding that the Constitution allows military action only with a declaration of war. That makes them subject to isolationism and the American Bunker Mentality.

No one believes in withdrawing from the world. They need to get over it.

The Constitution permits military action short of all-out war.

I don’t see the opportunity for a third party or independent candidate yet, and see only two scenarios that could bring the opportunity about.

First, as I watch Congress and the White House push hard on an economic stimulus plan, I have this deep-rooted sense the plan is more about protecting politicians and less about stimulating the economy. I see the plan as a federal insurance plan for politicians just in case the economy is headed down the tubes. The stimulus plan could stave off a deep recession until after the November elections. Without the rebate package, and, if the economy did go south effecting large numbers of households, many incumbents could be tossed from office, and depending on the severity of the recession, a third party presidential candidate could present a viable choice.

The second scenario, if Iraq reverted back to increased violence and loss of American lives. Clinton and all Republican candidates, except Ron Paul, are on record for keeping our troops in Iraq for years to come. The war ranks a high second behind the economy as a concern among voters. That doesn’t mean all those that rank the war high among their concerns are in support of the war. It means that the doves and hawks rank it high on their list. If atrocities increased between the time of the primaries, and if those primary results decided the party candidates ahead of the conventions, and if both Democratic and Republican candidates held positions keeping our troops in Iraq, the door would be open to a third party candidate.

In a nutshell, that’s a whole lot of IFS, and I don’t see all of these ifs playing out, and it would take all to get a third party candidate elected.

There is one additional scenario that could propel a third party candidate into the White House. If illegal aliens and their advocates staged massive nationwide rallies this May, as they did last year, and the presumed candidates of both parties are pro-amnesty, this one issue could determine the next president, especially if the economy is sour forcing Americans to fight for jobs held by illegal aliens.

I think it is time for a new national party!1 We need to get organized. I want a party that will protect AMERICA from ILLEGALS and CHINESE MADE IMPORTS! I want a party that will create a smaller government in DC, FEDERALISM, supportive of the FAIR TAX, an energy policy that is REALISTIC (Drilling offshore and in ANWR), returning the dollar to the GOLD STANDARD, property Rights and making the USA into a RIGHT TIO WORK NATION — if you don’t want to join a union — it should be your right!

Who I want for President: Michael Steele
VP: Adam Putnam
