I am calling on the knowledgeable FR Community to help identify an object that has me baffled.
This silver doohickey was unearthed recently with the help of a metal detector by a friend of mine.
It is 2 3/4 in tall X 1 1/4 in wide.
It has a bracket on the back that is deep enough to accept maybe a leather strap and on the bottom - something is missing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Broach. But the design sure looks a heck of a lot like door-knocker!

The size is way too small - he described it.

That’s not necessary at all. It’s in the center and the main portion provides plenty of support both up and down.

Are there any prongs inside the lion mouth that may look like it held a stone?
Do the spacees in the back of it have any prongs or holes inside the slot that looks like it may had a pin attached at one time? Neat piece.

The rear picture indicates there is a nub at 1 end of the channel section (top end WRT that pix). Not sure about the “bottom” end. I agree with the other poster that asked for more pix from other sides/angles.

Not necessarly ... a broach ... could be attached to a shash type (leather or webbed) belt. Does not have to be a pin. Looks like something snapped into the the holder at the top. The curved piece is the clasping part, gives just slightly.

Bottle opener? (Sorry, couldnt resist . . . marking my place because Im curious as well). In looking at the object, it may be a better guess than you think.
Grit, how far does the nose of the object stick out? The lower lip looks like it might e able to grip the edge of a bottle and if the nose sticks out any distance at all, there would be plenty of leverage to remove the cap.
To: RosieCotton
I think its too small at under 3 inches tall to be a door knocker.

I can get side pix uploaded later. It does have slight curve from top to bottom.

No prongs or holes to indicate anything is missing from the front of the piece.
No prongs or teeth on the back either.

Yeah, but if you look at the back of the item, along the left edge there are some sort of solder-type marks where it looks as though something has broken off. I’d say jewelry, but they appear to be on the wrong edge.

No markings that I can see. Although I do believe it is sterling.

Not deep enough, in my estimation. Also, it feels way too delicate for that.
