Fred Thompson is set to announce today a major proposal that would take a huge bite out of the enormous illegal immigration problem in America. Fred will meet in Florida with the Collier County Sheriff, Don Hunter, and will then reportedly announce the details of his plan that would enforce our nation's borders and target cities and employers that harbor and hire illegal aliens. AP writer Brendan Farrington reports on the expected announcement:
Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson is choosing a county with a large farmworker population to announce an immigration policy Tuesday that will include stripping federal grant money from cities and states that don't report illegal immigrants.Thompson plans to meet with Collier County Sheriff Don Hunter before announcing details of his border security and immigration enforcement proposal.
A major part of the plan will be to reduce the number of illegal immigrants by increasing enforcement of existing law. Sanctuary cities, where city employees are not required to report illegal immigrants to federal authorities, would lose discretionary federal grants, said a campaign source who didn't want to be named because the plan hasn't been announced.
Thompson will also call for stronger laws to force employers to verify that workers aren't illegal immigrants, a more rigorous system to track who is coming in and out of the country and a plan to increase prosecution of "coyotes," smugglers who bring illegal immigrants across the Mexican border, the source said. He will also talk about border security.
Collier County has vast tomato farms that hire thousands of immigrants. Last year it was part of a two-county sweep with 163 illegal immigrants arrested in one weekend. The campaign plans to cite figures that 22 percent of the county's crime is committed by illegal immigrants and that 40 percent of county's arrest warrants are for illegal immigrants.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement recently trained 27 Collier sheriff's deputies to enforce immigration laws.
At a campaign stop in Georgia last week, Thompson accused rivals Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani of being soft on illegal immigration when Romney was Massachusetts' governor and Giuliani was New York's mayor.
Actually given how long it has been since the Feds have actually enforced the current laws, it will seem like a new concept to most...
Good move on Fred Thompson’s part. The first guy in the upper tier to be strong against illegal immigration will win easily.
Whoever successfully uses this issue can get votes across-the-board.
Come on, Fred. Time to make a real mark.
This is ripe for it - the other major candidates are weak on the issue, and Fred can start pulling away from the pack if he can articulate a clear, tough position.

Immigration is also a key to getting some of the black vote.
He needs to go into both Union and Black communities and talk about the damage that illegal immigration is doing to their income and welfare.
He doesn’t need money to win...he can make press by going into these hostile areas and courting them. Screw the money from business people who want cheap labor.
Duncan Hunter has gotten no traction with this issue amoung the journalists.....I hope Fred can get out the message.

That’s what I was thinking -
a major anti-illegal immigration plan would put him over the top.
The rest would then try to “me to” (ala Harry Reid) their way to glom onto it, but it would be too late.

I was talking to another woman yesterday while waiting for the train. She’s an American who had just returned from 20 years abroad ( Germany ) and she’s ready to go back because, as she put it, “I don’t even recognise my own country anymore. In Europe, if you don’t work, they send you home! What the hell is this”?- while gesturing at the large group of unemployed ( and doubtlessly illegal ) young men gathered across the street from us. I love my country and would never leave, but I understand her frustration.
I’ll go for the guy who has made it a central issue since he came into office, rather than one who says “one day we awoke to find 12 to 20 million illegal aliens” had invaded.
...sure hope your office window isn't too high to jump out of...because when you hear Fred's detailed solution, a lot of Freepers are going to be tearing their hair out.
He already has stated that he doesn't want to deport the vast majority of illegal immigrants already here... and that he wants to differentiate between the hotel maid and the MS-13 gang-banger. Between the hardworking, peacefull illegal that is trying to better his/her life and that of their children, and that of the repeat offender that is part of the 'catch and release' MO of too many sanctuary counties and cities across the land.
He wants to register them, give them work permits, and provide them with an EVENTUAL path to US citizenship.
I'm looking forward to hearing his plan.
There have been some victories lately in Europe by candidates running on protecting their borders and their culture.
