Fred Thompson in 1994: Let The Woman Decide - Monday, April 09, 2007 @ 3:06:23 PM

During his first run for the U.S. Senate, Fred Thompson said in an interview to a libertarian Republican newsletter that the ultimate decision to have an abortion "must be made by the woman."

The comments were made in the July/August issue of Republican Liberty, the official newsletter of the Republican Liberty Caucus.

In the interview, Thompson was asked: "Some conservatives got flustered by your comments on abortion and Roe vs. Wade. Would you like to explain your position on abortion?"

Thompson answered: "Government should stay out of it. No public financing. The ultimate decision must be made by the woman.

What I find interesting is how FAST they have mobilized here.

Opposition research is in overdrive.

Notice how we have the announcement today of NY moving their primary to February with all the other states in a further move to protect the annointed primary candidates.

It seems the elitits will only accept a Rudy Rhodman Guiliani vs Hillary Rhodman Clinton race.

They saw how fred thompson got up to the double digits and rudy lost 7 points just at the MENTION that fred thompson might run. They’re looking for anything they can to bring down Thompson.

He has issues that detract.

The overwhelming fly in his ointment is the intangible that he does not ‘connect’. His speeches are stale, predictable, lacking vision; nothing extraordinary. His presence is stiff and his policies are devoid of original conservative thought. They are shoehorn fits to perceived social issues with solutions that are glommed together to satisfy focus groups.

He’s a mannequin.

There is no compelling reason for people to vote for him, hence his 3% in the polls.

WALLACE: Do you want to overturn Roe vs. Wade?

THOMPSON: I think Roe vs. Wade was bad law and bad medical science. And the way to address that is through good judges. I don’t think the court ought to wake up one day and make new social policy for the country. It’s contrary to what it’s been the past 200 years.

We have a process in this country to do that. Judges shouldn’t be doing that. That’s what happened in that case. I think it was wrong.

-—”It’s funny that fans of a 100% NARAL rated candidate are all of a sudden trying to paint a ZERO % rated NARAL candidate as some sort of abortion boogey man.”-—

At his worst, in 1994, he believed the government should stay out of it, and that there should be no public funding. That’s in his “Pro-Choice” days.

Now, 13 years later, he is speaking as a man who is even more unapologetically Pro-Life. I, for one, would like to hear him give us a detailed explanation as to his complete views on Abortion. But from what I know so far, he seems to be more than adequate.

Positives:
*Knows Roe is bad law, recognizes it NEEDS to be overturned.
*Opposes any public funding on the issue.
*Holds 100% Pro-Life voting record (except for CFR).
*Knows that “strict constructionist” judges would overturn Roe v. Wade.

Negatives:
*Opposes Constitutional Life Amendment.
*Not necessarily a Pro-Life ACTIVIST.

So what I gather to be gained is this:
1.) Mexico City Policy stays.
2.) Hyde Amendment stays.
3.) Public funding DENIED to best of Executive powers.
4.) Partial-Birth Abortion bans kept signed, no caveats.
5.) Parental Consent & Notification progress can be made.
6.) Anti-Roe judges.
7.) Hardcore “states’ righter” on the issue - good and bad.
8.) Pro-Life bills brought before him - likely all signed.
9.) Violence against Unborn laws likely signed and enforced.

I would like to hear him speak about Embryonic Stem Cell research and whether he would also prevent Federal Funding as Bush has. I would also like him to explain to his fullest his views on abortion in entirety.

But from what I know and can discern, Fred should be at least as functionally Pro-Life as Bush, which is a very good position for us to be in.

I would like to see Fred do the following:
1.) Aforementioned explanations on issues.
2.) Meet with James Dobson to talk about faith issues, et al
3.) CLEARLY describe himself as an unapologetic Conservative

So far, so good! ;-)

I haven’t seen any. Most of the DH fans have been happy with the thought of Thompson entering the race, which will serve to knock out the 3 RINO stooges. Then the GOP can concentrate on picking from good CONSERVATIVE candidates. Not whichever RINO can fool the most republicans.

“Duncan Hunter is the only viable GOP candidate who has been, is and always will be PRO-LIFE.”

As someone who supports Rudy in this primary I would agree with you 100% if you delete the word “viable” from above. Having just 1 or 2% in the national polls just doesn’t cut it.

As conservatives we can not afford to elect middle of the road Republicans or Republicans who adhere to leftist philosophies. If we continue to do this, our party and our principles will slowly but surely erode until they are unrecognizable. That is what happened to the Democratic party...look at them now. Truman wouldn’t recongize his own party. Neither would JFK for that matter. And can you imagine FDR, for all his socialist tendencies, being against a war that defends freedom.

We cannot afford middle of the road Republicans. We need solid conservatives now or we will be slowly erased from existence.

I am not proud of that story. What I did not confess to was the fact I spent $2,000 in that election for McCain. I feel like a fool for being taken in. I'm a little smarter now, but I will contribute $2,000 to Fred Thompson just as soon as he is nominated as our candidate. I will no longer waste money on a primary, until the day comes when I actually get to cast a vote in a primary. I have lived in Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, California and Kansas. The Republican candidate was decided by the East coast liberal/moderates as it always is. I never even had the opportunity to vote for McCain!

I'm hoping that this year, Kansas will move our primary to February 5th. The middle of the country has a voice too, and it should be heard, just as in a general election.

I don’t mind bringing up the past statements of any of our announced and unannounced candidates..

I do like context and thoroughness as well:)

"Right now my main activity, being so far out from the primary, is to help make sure the big 3 RINOs are exposed."

I'm not in love with any of the declared candidates or even Fred.

It's fine with me to see new information on all of them. I would hope that everyone wants to get all the facts out to make a decision. Frankly, I'm glad to see the warts on all candidates exposed.

Unfortunately, there's way too many school yard insults in postings from all sides. These don't bring any value to the discussion.

No, this Rudymite was quoting a reporter that quoted wrongly. The same news mag also came out and reported this smear was a smear.

I guess if it’s in the news, it must be true eh?

How is quoting FT verbatim “distorting his record?”.

It's an attempt to imply he's pro-abortion. It's been done before, by Rudyphiles.

I think it's repeated every day.

But Rudy is the one who is pro-abortion, Fred is not.

Thompson answered: “Government should stay out of it. No public financing. The ultimate decision must be made by the woman.”

The ultimate decision is almost always made by the woman and at least he didn't call her the "mother" which always makes me want to hurl.

You're looking silly FO, the fear of Fred;'s entry is causing y'all too much grief and for the life of me, I can't understand why.

The nest possible scenario is a full field of GOP candidates and may the best man win.

I think ALL Hunter fans would love to see Newt and Thompson leading the pack instead of Rudy and McCain. They are at least conservative.

Even if that happens, I will go to my grave believing Hunter is the superior man.
