		During his first run for the U.S. Senate, Fred Thompson said in an interview to a libertarian Republican newsletter that the ultimate decision to have an abortion "must be made by the woman." The comments were made in the July/August issue of Republican Liberty, the official newsletter of the Republican Liberty Caucus. In the interview, Thompson was asked: "Some conservatives got flustered by your comments on abortion and Roe vs. Wade. Would you like to explain your position on abortion?" Thompson answered: "Government should stay out of it. No public financing. The ultimate decision must be made by the woman.

Funny that you rudybots, who can’t defend rudy enough on abortion, are trying to paintfred thompson as some kind of pro abortion candidate.

Funny, just earlier to day you were telling me how it was Rudy's statements that were the problem, not the anti-Rudy posters.

But when Thompson's statements are posted, suddenly your rules change.

When he ran, in 1994, he was supported by at least one pro life group.
When he was in the senate, when it counted, all his votes were pro life.

It’s not like romney who all of a sudden wakes up and realizes “hey, I wanna be president” and decides he’s pro life when he doesn’t have to win in MA anymore.

Duncan Hunter is the only viable GOP candidate who has been, is and always will be PRO-LIFE.

Thompson is pro-life, just as much as Hunter and President Bush is.

This is nothing more than a desperate, underhanded attack on a good man by the poster and the minority of FReepers who back Giuliani.

You seem reasonably intelligent and you talk about the value of thinking things through carefully.

But your thoughts reveal nuggets of sentence fragments put there by others. For example:

Abortion is not a single issue and never was.

It has a horrible effect on age demographics that in turn have their deleterious effect on entitlement liabilities which in turn applies a strong pressure for tax increases and deficits and so on.

Abortion also has an effect on our military and hence our security.

Abortion is decided on the basis of age, health, political views and economics. Of these factors economics is predominant. And some of causes of the economic stress are persistent high taxation through ever changing venues, the necessity of recent history (last 30 years) of needing two wage earners in a family, the high cost and regulation of child care and the lack of cohesive extended family structures.

There are 45+ million deaths due to abortion since Roe vs. Wade and of those persons that would be here with us today there would be 70+ million more Americans. That's more than enough to fill the employment gap and to fund the entitlements.

As it stands, the President and Congress are looking at importing the missing demographic to solve the crisis through 'regularization' of illegal border crossers. But such a solution is cowardly and ill-advised as it burdens the current crisis with additional economic burdens that have not been carefully thought through.

Call it God's wrath.

No, I’m trying to give them some perspectives.

His statements show that he believes roe v wade was bad constitutional law (as opposed to roody thinking it’s good law). That means that abortion goes back to the states, which would have their own abortion policy. That shows he is conservative and has an originalist view of the constitution.

It’s funny that fans of a 100% NARAL rated candidate are all of a sudden trying to paint a ZERO % rated NARAL candidate as some sort of abortion boogey man.

Although I have lived in Michigan for 30 years, all the suburbs over there run together.

For instance, on I-96/US 23 heading to Ohio, “Detroit” starts at Brighton and goes all the way to Monroe.
