Dumb Computer Question

Not understanding much about computers, I have been getting lots of "The page cannot be displayed" messages when I go clicking. This is a relatively new problem. Also, it seems like everything takes much longer to come up online and pages don't always fill completely. Bottom line is "Cannot find server or DNS Error Internet Explorer".

I am using IE7 but am having similar problems using Firefox2. My cable modem checks out. I have deleted temporary files and cookies often. Still, I am getting frustrated by the slow and erratic performance.

Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

Norton Internet Security could be your problem. Some file may have gotten corrupted in the compression. Uninstall it & check to see if you're still having the problem.

Did you have the same problems with IE6? (If not, you can uninstall IE7 in add-remove programs.)

Did you recently install any new software or hardware?

BTW did you try the netsh command suggested in an earlier post? I am not suggesting that you try it, because you may have to reinstall some software if you did, but am just wondering whether or not you tried it.

Try this. Start > Run > (you type in the box) cmd

and click OK.

After the black window appears, you type

netstat -e

and hit enter. What are the discard & error counts reported?

Click your START button and then go to RUN:

type services.msc in the dialog box...

Click OK...

Make sure these are started/enabled (if they're listed):

- ASP.NET State Service

- COM+ Event System

- DCOM Server Process Launcher

- Network Connections

- Network DDE DSDM

- Network Location Awareness (NLA)

- SSDP Discovery Service

Reboot and see if this resolves your problem.

The machine came with 60 days of Norton. I went to their site and paid 59 bucks to download the 2007 version. I don't have the discs. If I uninstall I may have to try to find all the documentation and go back to their site to download again.

Did not have problem with IE6. QUESTION: If I uninstall IE7, what will I use to get to Microsofts site? The FireFox I have?

Haven't gone that far yet. Went to a link provided by Space Wrangler to read more about it. Sounds a little hairy for me (kinda like if I don't do something right I'll wipe out my computer or worse - heheh)

I would recommend doing a system restore. [Certain versions of] Kazaa are known to have spyware, which could be compriming your internet connection. Restore your computer to a time before you installed Kazaa.

Then, download and install and run AVG Anti-Spyware and see what it finds. My guess is that it will find tons of problems to correct.

I went to each one of these and started them all EXCEPT Network DDE DSDM (it did not allow me the option to do it - instead it said if the service is stopped, DDE network shares will be unavailable and that any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

How do you get it into the STARTED mode?

1) Double click the title for each of the two

2) A dialog box will appear for each one

3) Next to "startup type" click the drop-down menu and select "Automatic"

4) Click "Apply"

5) Click the "Start" button

6) Click OK

7) Do this for ASP.NET State Service and Network DDE DSDM and then reboot and relaunch your browser.

Try starting Network DDE first, if that is not started/enabled. Then try to start Network DDE DSDM. It should work then.

There is a possibility that Norton Internet Security is causing the problem (it causes plenty). At least try right clicking on its icon and disabling it for a very very short time, to see if you still get the DNS errors.

To remove IE7 go to Add-Remove Programs in Control Panel and uninstall Windows Internet Explorer 7. You won't have to use Firefox, it will just revert to IE6.

Sorry, but the file sharing software could easily be causing the problem. If reverting to IE6 does not fix the problem I would remove those next.

I don't think you need to uninstall Norton to see if that is the problem. Just temporarily turn it off.

If that don't fix the problem, I would think about unistalling that Kazaa program. That might have spyware. I know that one of the versions of Kazaa is full of spyware. Actually, since Kazaa is a file sharing program, maybe the reason your connection is so slow is because people are downloading files off your computer.

I've been noticing this too.

I have separate programs for firewall, virus, and registry changes.

After tweaking site settings, I think this has to do with blocking persistent cookies, web bugs, and mobile code (Java, etc.).

After letting these updates through, I can get the websites to load.

For me, I delete all un-approved cookies every day, so I don't mind letting these sites through temporarily.

That is strange. I would then recommend what this poster said:

Open a command window and type the following command:

NETSH WINSOCK RESET CATALOG

Reboot. If worse comes to worse, you can always do a system restore, and get your computer back to where it was before Kazaa was installed.

Nope, shouldn't matter. As a matter of fact, I've got Network DDE DSDM started but Network DDE is not started or enabled. It's set to "manual" but isn't currently running. On the other hand, Network DDE DSDM is ALWAYS running on my PC. Reboot and see if there's any progress.

The problem with disabling & leaving NIS installed is that a lot of times the hinkiness in that program is in the anti-virus portion of it. Disable only disables the firewall, leaving potential conflicts still running.

Adware & shareware would slow everything down, but I don't think I've ever seen the level of problems Ex-Wretch seems to be having.

I think Norton can all be disabled via msconfig.
