In 1996 or 97, I recall reading an article in a magazine that described a terrorist attack in the form of gassing an NBA playoff basketball game in Indianapolis. I was standing at a newsstand somewhere or other. My brow furrowed as I struggled to comprehend the logic of what I was reading.

The article mentioned several different terror groups, and several names (including Osama bin Laden). The arena had been gassed by someone who had access to the HVAC system in the arena, and, of course, it was done on national television.

And, as did millions of others, I dismissed the article as the fanatical tinfoil rantings of a lunatic. Little did I know what was in store for the nation a few scant years later.

Attack not the canary. Just pay attention and be prepared. The dates do not matter. The details do not matter. What matters is that the bad guys are still out there, and though we don't hear all the details, the battles continue to be waged.

Iraq is window-dressing. Don't neglect to see the forest for the trees.

Just damn.
