FR Folding@Home Project Update -- We're in the Top 75 of all teams with 9.75 Million points
Stanford University's Folding@Home Stats page ^ | 08/02/2006 | Texas Booster

Time for a new FreeRepublic folding@home thread.

Our FreeRepublic team of 358 members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).

Currently, the team is in 75th place (with 1009 active CPUs - 55,700 completed Work Units and 9.75 million points).

This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 20 folding threads)

I salute all our new members for the recent record totals. Welcome to the "fold".

Hey... I've pointed out since February, that my points are only here to spank the DU... when I found out that I could match, or exceed them, I got on a mission. y'all are doing the serious folding, and they're irrelevant.

Even without me, the team would be #95, which is not shabby by any stretch of the imagination. Last Christmas eve, when I tossed my first CPU into the hat, we were like looking at a week, or was it two weeks, to crack the top 1500??

I'm now lagniappe, and the 600lb gorilla who shows up when you guys need somebody squatted on.

The team does itself proud.

Energy gods... they are annoying, and if I was motivated enough, I could probably find ways to circumvent them, but I'm comfortable with pacing DU, and knowing that when the team needs a "push", I can provide one. But it is the team, in the long run, and that's where the emphasis should remain.

???? Bummer. Have you tried penicillin? Or the old standby of inverting your flux capacitor? (OK I googled the definition and I'm off my meds now)

Hey Egon, if you get a chance would you take a look at the Machine Stats for my base unit? Any idea why they would be so radically out of whack with all other unit I've ever processed?

Specifically?

I glanced at that machine's project history. It looks like it's slightly faster than average on the vast majority of projects it tackles-- except for the current one, which looks like it'll finish significantly slower. Is that what you mean?

Yea, I just don't don't understand why that p1811 would be so devastatingly difficult for this processor. Can't make sense of it.

Not sure. I looked at some of the other processors that had historically completed the project, but wasn't really able to discern a pattern-- it's a newer project (to us), though, so maybe it'll work itself into a pattern as we go. We're also able to track (assuming user participation) what kinds of processors (and RAM) we're throwing at the projects too, so maybe we'll be able to figure something out.

Even looking at the project description didn't seem to yield anything.

My FH says "attempting to send results". It's been saying that for about 8 hours now. Looks like it is stuck. What's up with that?

Looks like my time in Germany is finally catching up to me. Having most of my boxes down now for 3 weeks has allowed you to catch me. You will either pass me today or tomorrow. I suspect that I finish only one (maybe if lucky 2) WU today, so it's not looking good for me.

I'll be back stateside in little more than a week and will start bringing machines back online. You're numbers are pretty high, but I think I crank out about 50-100 more points per day, so I'll slowly catch back up (unless you put together another system).

In other words, enjoy your lead while it lasts, and happy folding.

It's been a tough slog trying to pass you, even with your machines in idle.

I was on a tear last week and then some machines got wonky on me. I just about have all the problems unravelled. I'm cobbling together a Linux-based Pentium D Presler system cranking two cores at 3.4 MHz to replace my dated Pentium III. I'll place it side by side with my Linux-based budget Pentium D 805 dual core Frankenstein folder. I'll keep both of them humming in the hobby shed out back of the house where their prodigious heat output (the bane of Intel Pentium Ds) will keep the place comfy and cozy and toaster warm without the need for a space heater come winter.

I've upgraded the Celeron to a full Pentium 4 with a CPU I scavanged. And I've promised my son I'll help him put together an overclocked Pentium Core 2 Duo E6300 or E6400 machine to replace his aging 32-bit Athlon 2100+. I'll configure the E6300/E6400 to fold in at least one console session. The Athlon 2100+ will then join the Smithfield 805 and Presler 945 out back in the shed to fold until it dies.

That will give me nine solid full-time folders and access to three more part-time folders. When all are folding optimally, I should be able to crack 800-1000 points easily over an average 24 hour period I would think.

I rather enjoy this. My wife has infinite patience, but even she is starting to express some exasperation over my fascination with this.

One of my Linux machines completed a 459 point project a few days ago and tried more than a dozen times to send the results up and failed each time. Then I noticed that I had neglected to reconnect the machine to the wireless LAN the last time I had powered down, performed some maintenance, and powered back up. After I fixed that, the machine reported that it had successfully sent the results, but the points were never credited to my account. They just vanished.

Earlier today I powered down one of my Windows XP machines to reseat the CPU cooling fan. I was about 15 percent of the way through a 600 point project when I powered down. When I booted back up, the 600 point project had vanished and my machine started anew on a 396 point project.

I have to learn not to power down in the middle of projects. Usually it doesn't cause a problem. But in these two high point cases, the consequences were ugly.

Congratulations on the #2 producer spot!

Quite an accomplishment considering who is #1.

"I have a dormant machine or two I will get going for this project."

That's great!   The more the merrier.   If you need any help, just ask anyone here.   I recommend the console version of FAH.  Then, you'll also need a way to monitor progress, so FReepmail Egon for the link to his download page - he created a monitoring program just for us FReepers and it is really neat.

Welcome to the 'Fold'.

"My FH says "attempting to send results". It's been saying that for about 8 hours now. Looks like it is stuck. What's up with that?"

Try logging off  and rebooting the system (in Windows - 'Shutdown, Restart').  That might get you reassigned to a different FAH server that will accept the WU.  If that doesn't work, try browsing the web to make sure your internet connection is active.  If your connection is good, then try reconfiguring FAH.   Let us know what happens.

I've got to run right now, but I've pinged Egon and Klutz to a thread about Folding and Sony that someone just posted - we may be able to get some more folders for our team from that thread: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/chat/1690375/posts?page=1

Also, someone should monitor the DUmp for them to see the article, and then post something about Klutz really being Sony in disquise.

I'll check back tonight! Happy folding!

Congratulations on the #2 producer spot!

LOL, thanks! It was a pleasant surprise this morning. It'll be really hard to approach lrenh and malsua in terms of points, but I can try to give them a run for their money in the top 20 producers...

I just found this interesting comment on the Stanford forum:

stats recredit Posted on Wed 23 Aug, 2006 15:46 by Vijay Pande News Due to an update in the server code, some of the servers were too strict in testing WU's upon receipt, leading to unnecessarily rejected WU's and lost points. We have fixed the server issue and we are now working on the recredits. This was fairly pervasive, so the recredits will take a little longer than I'd like, but we hope to get this done today or tomorrow.

There may still be hope....
