Did a planetary wobble kill the dinosaurs?Bruce Runnegar from the University of California at Los Angeles' Center for Astrobiology... and his colleagues used computer models to map out the Solar System for the past 250 million years. In particular, they looked at the perihelion of each planet - the point in its orbit where it is closest to the Sun. The perihelion of Earth rotates around the Sun with a period of hundreds of thousands of years. Because of subtle tugs and pulls between the planets, this period changes slightly with time... Their model suggests one of these blips significantly changed Mercury's orbit 65 million years ago. This wobble would have pulled at the asteroid belt, increasing the chances that asteroids in the Hungarias region would be knocked out of place. Now the researchers are running a fresh set of models to see how much the orbits of these asteroids changed. It wouldn't have been enough to send a shower of asteroids into the Earth, but Runnegar says the wobble could have sent a single asteroid onto collision course with our planet... Now he is planning to run his models forward in time, to see when the next potentially catastrophic planetary wobble will be.

Earth stretched by seasonal water movementEach winter, snow and soil moisture accumulates in cold polar regions and the atmosphere becomes denser. The elastic body theory predicts that this extra weight should slightly compress the hemisphere experiencing winter. In the north, the maximum compression should occur in February or March, when the most water has accumulated. The polar region should then dry out during spring and summer, while moisture settles out at the opposite pole. The result is an annual oscillation of Earth's shape. And this is exactly the pattern shown in the GPS data. Sites near the north pole sank up to three millimeters in February and March, while regions near the equator moved about 1.5 millimeters north. Then the cycle reversed, with moisture accumulating near the south pole causing it to sink about three millimeters during the southern hemisphere's winter in August and September... Once they understood the oscillation pattern, the geophysicists were able to estimate that a load of about 1016 kilograms shifts between the hemispheres each year.

Yeah, book mutilation is a scholarly practice."Rogue Asteroids and Doomsday Comets" by Duncan SteelAlthough Steel disarmingly introduces Chapter 8 as devil's advocacy that "many will find bizarre," he has a more serious purpose: it is to gain some acceptance (in this case concerning the distant past, which will always be shrouded in uncertainty) of a theory, promoted by Steel's British colleague Victor Clube, for which the word "bizarre" would be an understatement. Clube believes that the modern history of Western civilization (one example is the Protestant reformation) has been shaped chiefly by comet storms which, furthermore, he believes are increasing at the present time. Indeed, Steel himself approvingly quotes Clube's theory that the Dark Ages commenced as a result of "conflagrations" due to the so-called Taurid complex of meteors and comet fragments.

Here is where professional meteoriticists and planetary scientists should take note. Steel attributes many impact occurrences (including the Farmington meteorite and the Tunguska blast) to the Taurid complex, an ill-defined and inherently difficult- to-observe heterogeneous belt of debris, orbiting in the inner solar system, derived from a giant comet that he believes was disrupted about 5,000 years ago. Encke's comet and several meteor showers are the primary observables. A theme that runs through this book, and pops up in subdued form even in some of the chapters I label as being authoritative, is that coherent clusters or streams of cometary debris -- the Taurid complex is a particular, current example -- somehow dominate the terrestrial impact rate, and invalidate the average rates (and hence hazard of future impacts) deduced by Gene Shoemaker and others...
...In conclusion, I recommend buying "Rogue Asteroids and Doomsday Comets" along with a pair of scissors. Cut out and throw away pp. 60-64 and 70-73 from Chapter 4, pp. 114-116 and 125-136 from Chapter 7, and all of Chapters 6 and 8. Then have an enjoyable read, being just a little wary, however, whenever the Taurid complex is mentioned.
I think that a case can be made that sometime about 5000 years ago men all over the world began to look up.
And this — not just because of the datings of things like stonehenge or various astronomical megaliths around the world but also because sailors from different races civilzations and opposite ends of the earth —navigating by the stars — arrived in Hawaii within 1000 years of each other. In dog years that a lot—but in the broader scheme of things its not.
Coastal sailing has been around maybe 50,000 years.
Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9In 1992, SL 9 passed by Jupiter within the Roche limit. It was broken into at least 21 separate fragments which were dispersed several million kilometers along its orbit... The estimates range from 2 to 10 km in diameter for the original body and from 1 to 3 km for the largest fragments. Between 16 July 1994 and 22 July 1994 the fragments impacted the upper atmosphere of Jupiter. This was the first time that scientists had an opportunity to witness the collision of two extraterrestrial bodies... The after-effects of the impacts were visible on Jupiter for nearly a year after the event. There are linear chains of craters on Ganymede and Callisto that are believed to have been formed by the impacts of bodies similar to SL 9.

According to the NTSB (report here), there were in 2006 (latest figures available) 50 fatalities recorded for US air carriers.
