Colin Powell criticizes spying program, says they could have gotten warrants

Posted on 12/23/2005 4:14:20 PM PST by EveningStar

"My own judgment is that - it didn't seem to me, anyway, that it would have been that hard to go and get the warrants. And even in the case of an emergency, you go and do it. The law provides for that. And three days later, you let the court know what you have done, and deal with it that way."

I would never criticize Powell on his patriotism.

Why? What did Powell ever do for America? He was an advocate of Detente during the Cold War and if it were up to him the USSR would still be alive.

As I said before, I would never criticize his patriotism or his right to speak. I just wish he'd kept this under his hat.

He had a different opinion. Patriots can have different opinions.

Not on this issue. You are either with the President on this issue or you are a traitor and a coward.

That is a ridiculous comment. Would you be traitor and a coward if you disagreed with the president?

Is it fair to ask him to keep all the bad (I.E. not lock-step with Bush) opinions to himself and yet jump on his bandwagon when he does praise Bush or speaks well of him, as happened ~last~ week? FReepers are fickle. Last week, when he agreed with Bush, Powell was a great statesman. Now he's a bad dog.

I don't swing in the breeze. I support Bush in whatever he decides on this issue. But Powell speaks from a learned and valid perspective. He's worth listening to. The presidency, and the Republican party should never be an echo chamber.

What did Powell ever do for America?

Are you serious? He's been serving this country, as a soldier and valued advisor, since the Reagan administration. Has one president ever asked ~you~ for your opinion?

This isn't the least surprising when you consider that most anti-American 'news' that appears probably comes from the State Department.

Most anti-Bush news probably comes from the CIA

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. The man so revered & yet IMO just another RINO. This was another reason I did not vote for GW the 1st time.

It has nothing to do with this President. If you don't believe our military and CIA should be allowed to wiretap international terrorists you are a traitor and a coward ... and an idiot. Is that better?

I did not comment on Powell's comments last week. I don't even know what they were. And you don't see ME calling him a "bad dog." I don't think the presidency and the GOP should be an echo chamber. I just wish he had kept this under his hat - for a while.

Good soldiers do not necessarily make good politicians. Look at Ariel Sharon. He was bad@ss in the IDF, but as prime minister he is caving into the pressure to appease the Palistinkians.

Actually, I did not mind having Powell as Sec of State. I think it's good for a president to have a wide spectrum of opinions to draw on.

Now I agree that ALL THINGS being equal and all things being PERFECT, it would be an advisable thing to do to abide by the FISA LAW.

However, all things are never equal and all things are NEVER perfect so there are time when the FISA LAW can NOT be adhered to..........[here is the IMPORTANT POINT]...........by the EXECUTIVE BRANCH of GOVERNMENT, which is NOT COVERED BY THAT LAW when it pertains to foreign enemies and their agents foreign or domestic!!!!!!!!

Would it be someday that NEWS was reported for it's intrinsic value and necessity RATHER than a SOUND BITE for LEFTIST political GAIN!!!

Whoa...

What did Powell ever do for America? He SERVED in the United States Army for longer than you've been alive.

I strongly disagree with him opening his mouth as he often does in a discouraging lack of support for his former boss. I rarely like what he says. He disappoints me often.

I also respect him, he's a soldier.
