DEBKAfile Exclusive: US Marines are locked in battle with Syrian troops
Debka ^ | November 25, 2005

Posted on 11/24/2005 3:31:53 PM PST by Dog

Both sides have suffered casualties. US soldiers crossed over after Damascus was given an ultimatum Thursday, Nov. 24, to hand over a group of senior commanders belonging to Abu Musab al Zarqawi’s al Qaeda force. According to US intelligence, the group had fled to Syria to escape an American attack in Mosul. Syrian border guards opened fire on the American force.

Let loose the carpet layers of war..

Me thinks carpet bombing is an excellent way to start the incursion.

Sometimes a claim a story was in DEBKA is used to prop up something that has no real basis in fact.

I agree!!! Except, no civilians. Bomb all the political offices and destroy their entire air force and ground military capability from the air. We need to use all the power in our command.

This is not the first time that Syria and Coalition forces exchanged fire this month. What do you want to believe, Debka or the wacko arab network?

Dog, there were 6 Marines and one Army FATALITY on the Syrian border on 11/17. The bad guys crossed back into Syria. Yesterday the Iraqi Gvmnt called on Syria to cough up the bad guys. The Marines may well have had intel on their location and went after them. If so the war on terror just took an major new direction - unless some Marine commander jumped the gun. The Marines get really pissed when the bad guys jump borders - don't blame them. This was all part of a large operation in the area.

Before the war in Iraq officially started, we had a lot of unreported activity on the ground within Iraq. It would not surprise me in the least if we were conducting unofficial activities in Syria and/or Iran.

DebkaFile is always interesting, frequently first with a story, and sometimes accurate. I think their prediction success is low due to plans getting changed after being revealed in Debka.

Is Debka not the most reliable of sources?

I stopped believing Debka when before the war they claimed that US Special Forces were watching every WMD installation in the country and knew exactly what was where.

If we were, it wouldn't have been so easy to spirit out of the country.

No, I don't really believe Debka, much as I might hope this story is true and has legs.

We would probably send in Special Ops teams rather than the Marines (unless we were going all the way, then it would be a bigger force with significant air support.)

Iraq asks Syria to detain insurgents

"..14:47 2005-11-24

The Iraqi government on Thursday called on Syria to detain "dangerous" insurgents who fled across the border to escape a joint U.S.-Iraqi military operation in the area this month. Government spokesman Laith Kubba also said that insurgent attacks are expected to rise before the Dec. 15 general elections. He said attacks by "Muslim extremists and Saddam (Hussein's) criminals" will be their last stand.Kubba said after the elections there will be a fully constitutional elected government and parliament representing all provinces of Iraq as well as a reconciliation conference early next year.

"Muslim extremists will be surrounded then wiped out," he said, adding that "I don't think this will happen in a short period."

U.S. and Iraqi officials have accused Syria for months of allowing foreign fighters to cross into Iraq. Kubba said Thursday that "some elements" had slipped back across the frontier into Syrian sanctuaries "so we ask the Syrian government to capture them and hand them over."

"Those elements that crossed into Syria are dangerous and some are wanted for crimes that they have committed," he said. .."

Although the above is from Pravda it indicates there are demands being made of the Syrians RE the insurgents.

Good evening.
"Any story published by DEBKA ought to be taken with a grain of salt."

Whatever the source, I would be greatly surprised if we don't have reconnaissance teams across the border. We likely have UAVs and satellite surveillance working, as well. Contact is almost inevitable at some point and we won't necessarily know about it until Assad is history.
