Free Republic's Roots

Founded in 1996 by Jim Robinson, what is FreeRepublic about?

What is our mission? Free Republic is dedicated to reversing the trend of unconstitutional government expansion and is advocating a complete restoration of our constitutional republic. Listed below are some of the issues we feel strongly about...

A return to a strictly Constitutional form of federal government will automatically repeal and abolish all unconstitutional federal involvement in states issues such as: crime, health, education, welfare and the environment...This will also require that social programs such as Social Security, welfare and Medicare be repealed. ~~ Jim Robinson, March 1999

Statement by the founder of Free Republic:

In our continuing fight for freedom, for America and our constitution and against totalitarianism, socialism, tyranny, terrorism, etc., Free Republic stands firmly on the side of right, i.e., the conservative side...We oppose all forms of liberalism, socialism... Free Republic's Next Triumph

The excerpts above were taken from existing or former webpages posted by Jim Robinson. Having been a member of FreeRepublic before the 1996 election, the mission statement once included the impeachment of Bill Clinton as one of FreeRepublic's goals, a goal the House Managers credited FreeRepublic with achieving. Now, after ten years of false starts and misfires, the second and third goals as stated in FreeRepublic's Mission Statement above, 2reversing the trend of unconstitutional government expansion and 3complete restoration of our constitutional republic, are finally within reach. Over the next several weeks, various Freepers will be posting the thinking and the mechanics behind this effort.

Those of you who have been Freepers long enough know that FreeRepublic played a pivotal role in generating the momentum and emotion that led to a successful vote in the House to Impeach then President Bill Clinton. Reversing the trend of unconstitutional government expansion and bringing about the complete restoration of our constitutional republic could depend on how effective Freepers and FreeRepublic prove to be in generating the kind of momentum and emotion that FreeRepublic produced during impeachment.

Jim Robinson and the members of FreeRepublic are owed an immense debt of gratitude by Freedom loving Americans. You are all Patriots in the true sense of the word. We thank you; we Salute you. And now we ask for your help in undertaking the most important part of FreeRepublic's acknowledged mission.

Our Challenge To You:

If you don't believe or cannot accept the idea that this plan can and will work, the burden of proof is on you to either improve it or put forward a replacement that is better. FreeRepublic has a long overdue mission to complete. In spite of some readily apparent Republican and conservative gains, it can be argued that we are not measurably closer to the objective than when FreeRepublic was founded. Those who would take issue with this claim should stop and consider that the unconstitutional entitlements are poised to grow exponentially over the next two decades. Get out your ping lists, start reviewing your address books and email lists, and start thinking about the people with whom you want to share this series as it unfolds or with whom you want to share it after it is complete and you are convinced.

Our Pledge to You:

And for the support of this mission, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, We, as members of We the people pledge to the members of FreeRepublic and mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.

Wow!

No damn wonder I'm on your ping list.

Good job! It would've taken me a novel to say what you said in four paragraphs.

"Welcome to Free Republic."

Thank you.

"Do you claim to speak for Jim Robinson?"

No one speaks for Jim Robinson, except Jim Robinson. Our goal happens to match FreeRepublic's mission statement. We believe our plan is capable of achieving FreeRepublic's mission. That is the reason we have decided to put it before this forum. The great minds and passions that exist in this forum should be a proving ground for testing and improving the plan that we intend to put forward.

When the background for the plan and the various elements, the working parts of the plan if you will, have been put forth, discussed, and hopefully improved, it will be up to Jim Robinson and every other individual Freeper or Lurker whether they want to help advance this particular plan with whatever changes or additions occur, or whether they would like to see a different plan put forward. Alternatively, some Freepers may decide to offer a plan themselves.

The preservation of freedom is a duty only to those willing to bear it. Benjamin Franklin said, "They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security."

We invite everyone to join with us in taking The Pledge.. The Pledge is not a committment to any specific plan or course of action. The Pledge is a committment to restore the Constitution as written and meant to be interpreted by the Founders. The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution of the United States define our country, our freedoms and who we should be. If no one is willing to support these goals, why are they here?

We believe the mission of FreeRepublic is important and that the identity of individual Freepers contributes nothing to the merits of the ideas that are going to be expressed in this series of articles.

The indentities of individual FReepers has almost always been meaningless in all contexts. That thought will chafe a lot FReeper's butts but if it weren't true we would all use our real names instead of cute 'handles.'

We believe the ideas will stand on their own merits and should be judged accordingly.

A truly novel idea! /sarcasm
I predict you will encounter some resistance to that (looks like you already have) because most Americans, even on the right, are quite infatuated with the cult of personality. Ideas and principles are fine but "WHO is that guy/gal?" That's one reason the Constitution has taken such a beating. It is entirely based on principles and ideas.

There is no question that the left is far more mired in that kind of "follower" mentality. One only needs to look at their attacks on the Founder's personalities as some sort of proof that the Constitution is invalid or limited to see how shallow they are. But it is a human weakness that has reached its zenith in America and crosses most political and social lines.

I suggest you forge ahead on principle and let the star-crossed figure their own lot out.
Good luck!

"Pledge taken!!!"

Thank you both.

Please get out your pings lists and invite your Freeper friends to follow suit. Better yet, get out your email address books and invite the members of your family and friends who are not Freepers to join FreeRepublic and then take The Pledge.

"There is no question that the left is far more mired in that kind of "follower" mentality."

There are some interesting theories regarding your point. There are some who believe this is a biologically hardwired phenomenon within our brains as part of the herding instinct. Some of you are no doubt familiar with Robert Prechter's work and the Elliot Wave Theory.

Some of this lies at the feet of "public education". People who lack a body of factual knowledge and who have not been trained to use their powers of deductive reasoning, have trouble forming opinions based on facts and logical reasoning. When you are not sure of what is right or confident about you should believe, it is comforting to know that others share your position regardless of merit or whether their judgment is any better than yours. Schooling behavior in lower animals and mob behavior are examples.

Everyone who reads this or subsequent articles are going to be given the background and the facts that are needed to make up their own minds for themselves. For those who need reassurances from others, rest assured, some of the material that you are going to see has been taken from conservative giants like Ronald Reagan and Newt Gingrich. Much will be taken from quotes of the Founders, some from Nobel laureates, and some from people who literally have "schools of thought" named after them.

If the material provided does not convince you, tell us why not! Please! Help us find the way to present our case in a way to convince anybody.

I saw the other thread from Oct. 17th that someone linked to. How many other threads have you put up in this series? Is this just the second one? It might be helpful if you put up links to all past threads in each new one.

I'm forever sending folks links to FreeRepublic. There is no finer place to find out what is happening in the world that is of importance to a conservative.

"It might be helpful if you put up links to all past threads in each new one."

Thank you for reminding us. We intended to make that a part of the format, but age sometimes cripples short term memory. The fault is mine alone.

This is the second article of the series. We will add links to each of the prior articles in future articles of the series.

Thanks again.
