Upcoming Conference Co-Sponsored by BOND and The Heritage Foundation to Address Crisis in Black America
Los Angeles- In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and just days before Louis Farrakhan’s Millions More Movement event (October 14-16), BOND, the Brotherhood Organization of A New Destiny and The Heritage Foundation will host “The New Black Vanguard Conference II: Reclaiming Our Destiny” on Tuesday, October 11, 2005, 1-4 p.m. EST at The Heritage Foundation’s Allison Auditorium (214 Massachusetts Avenue, NE, Washington, DC).
Building on last February’s successful conference (The New Black Vanguard Conference: Responding to The Call), the best and brightest Black conservatives from across America will gather on one stage to address critical issues confronting Black Americans and the country at large.
Participants include: Dr. Shelby Steele, Senior Fellow, The Hoover Institution; Peter Kirsanow, Member U.S. Civil Rights Commission; Linda Porter, Hurricane Katrina Survivor and Founder of Jochebed Education Project; Joseph Phillips, Actor and Columnist; and Moderator, Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, Founder and President of BOND.
The following topics will be addressed at the conference:
-Is too much government dependency destroying Black families?
-Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina: did racism play a role?
-Is Louis Farrakhan’s Millions More Movement a scam to fleece Black Americans?
-Why aren’t Black churches addressing the moral crisis in urban America?
-How can Black Americans achieve true success?

We can't do anything about the race we are born into, but we can work hard at getting an education and being a positive role model for or friends and family and society.
My daughter, who's in High School, saw this behavior all the time in her TX middle school. The black kids that got good grades, spoke well and did the right thing were attacked by other blacks for acting "white". The peer pressure was enormous on those kids.

Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell, Clarence Thomas, etc., are living proof that it works.

We all managed to make a pretty good life for ourselves though.
Excellent point. For example, how many people know who John Rogers is? He is an African American and was the most successful (success=high return) mutual fund manager of 2004. And you know he did it on his own, because Mr. Market is not a guilt-ridden white liberal and does not care what color you are.
Successful blacks do not get the press they should. I think it's because folks on the left like Jesse Jackson ignore them, because they don't fit the downtrodden image, and folks on the right concentrate on what the black community is doing wrong. But a little positive reinforcement never hurt anybody or any community.
Bill Cosby made the same comment and was almost lynched by the black community "leaders".
Exactly. Get an education, get a job, get married and support your family. It might not get you wealth and influence, but who wants to be like the crazy Kennedys, anyway?
I have only read recaps and paraphrased portions of Dr Cosby's speeches but they certainly made sense. I wouldn't expect a medical school to accept a student who wanted "to be goin' to college". That was Cosby's point, you are not becoming an uncle tom by learning to communicate using proper English.
How can Black Americans achieve true success?
Simple
1 finish school
2 get a job, go to work everyday
3 get married stay married
Hmmmm....just ask the half a dozen black families on my street. Although don't ask one particular black family on my street....snooty as hell and thinks the sun rises and sets for them when they walk out their front door.
