There's an old topic by this name, and it seems like it would be of some interest in casual moments.

Dune (1984) would be up there, if you read the book first.

2001 is also a notable achievement. I saw that 4 times before I read the book. Never understood it until I read the book. A. C. Clarke was a genius. His "songs of distant earth" needs to be made into a film.

Planet of the apes does not deserve mention, IMO.

I think THX1138 was maybe Lucas' best film...and Duvall in his first lead showed he had the right stuff to carry a movie!

Anyway, I have this crazy thing for dystopian stories...

I heard that the BBC version of Day of the Triffids is excellent-much better than the 1963 movie, in fact. The BBC has made lots of excellent SF productions,with the Quatermass serials being the best and best known but sadly, many of them are now forever lost.

One thing that sets most off is the long "real time" filming. It attempts to cast apprehension but may also bring on extreme boredom.

If there was a bad SF movie they could show on TV, it got shown in New Orleans on Sunday mornings when I was growing up, and I watched them every week....

A DVD of Attack of the Mushroom People (under the original title, Matango) was finally released, and instead of being campy, I found it to be a very good and creepy film, sort of a cross between Lord of the Flies and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. It features some excellent extras, including an interview with one of the FX men.

We had it on VHS. I can't seem to find it at the moment though. hehe... just as well I suppose.

I liked Postman, and I liked Waterworld, too...haven't read Waterworld, but Cosner can capture a certain tone pretty well. I'd like to see him tackle Norman Spinrad's Songs from the Stars. When I read it, Clear Blue Lou has Cosner's face in my head...

Yeah, I like Trek movies, although I don' t have any of them on DVD anymore. I agree, IV remains my favorite. My preference, in order:

IV, III, VII, VIII, II, VI, IX, X, V, I

I really, really hope there are no more.

Yup. He was also apparently a real conservative. I read an interview with him where he would always preface the word "liberal" with "weirdo pinko". Just one more reason we need more actors like Oates.:)

Logan's Run starts well, but starts to drag.

THX-1138 (similar plot, dunno offhand which was first) is out in a new DVD version.

Minority Report, another adaptation of PK Dick, isn't bad, but isn't Dick.

"Alien Nation", the movie of which was well shot, great fun, and made sense. Like the Stargate series, the Alien Nation series was gawdawful.
