Can Steven Becker Part ICan Steven Becker be Neglected to Death? by Nancy Valko and Sandy Caspersen
There are many ways to kill a sick or disabled person. Removing food and water is only one. Since Steven Becker's March operation to relieve pressure on his brain, discussion has revolved around eliminating food and water, provided through a tube into his digestive tract. This medically assisted food and water was correctly called "comfort care" in records at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in suburban st. Louis before the decision was made to end his life. Now the hospital as well as the media calls it "life support."
But hidden from the public, St. John's and its ethics committee have also decreed that other treatment antibiotics, other beneficial medications, physical therapy and a possible operation to correct his now infected brain shunt can also be denied to Steven even though the legal process is still proceeding.
Steven has been deemed by St. John's Mercy to be in a so-called "permanent vegetative state," defined as awake but unaware, although that diagnosis is disputed by at least one other doctor. Ironically, pain medications and muscle relaxants are now considered among the few treatments that may be provided. Why would a supposedly unresponsive person even need pain medication? Why is Steven's family told that information about his current medications is "confidential"?
The truth is that Steven has responded and smiled since his brain surgery, but is now no longer even allowed to sit up in a chair. Although family members and even hospital records have reported this responsiveness, the false picture of a motionless "man in a coma" persists.

This sounds very much like what is happening to Terri Shiavo. He refused to complete/sign an advanced directive so they used statements from others to remove his feeding tube. Why wouldn't the refusal to provide an advanced directive be enough????
To: truthseeker2
Lots more victims will befall the same fate as Terri....and the libs love it! Hey, if they can't vote, kill em!
So, even if I am on a respirator say, and somehow it gets pulled and I manage to live anyway,,my family can have me killed by withholding 'medical intervention' - the newly created buzzwords for food and water....
I never knew food and water were medical care items.....simple room air is next I suppose,,how about light? Or sensory deprivation? Why not? Where does it stop?
The US has become a cold, heartless place and it seems there is quite a majority out there that is quite proud of that......hey, but we're following the law dontchya know!

so get laws changed.
Take personal responsibility and update that will.
Tell more than your spouse what your wishes are.
But - stop asking the courts to legislate from the bench after the fact.

I didn't ask for the courts to legislate from the bench...the libs have done that. Question is...if it gets to the courts why wouldn't the refusal to provide an advanced directive carry as much weight as hersay??
PS...save your slings and arrows...I carry a shield to every message board...just in case.

How does one who is not in the legal arena prevent legislation 'before the fact?' Citizens need to stay involved of course and I agree with your position on taking personal responsibility. HOwever, it sounds like you wish for those who don't agree with the judicial decisions to go away and just shut up! So,,,,slavery, which was legalized and practiced,,,,,what was to be done about that? No protests after the fact? No outrage? It's uncomfortable when people get upset, no doubt. HOwever, what is wrong with calling attention to a wrong, even if it is after the fact? Is that really your objection?

Medical murder just like Terri Schiavos is repeated on other patients EVERY day in medical facilities across America.
A friend who has worked in "Catholic" hospitals for 25+ years came over for diner recently. He told us the HOSPICE associated with his "Catholic" hospital constantly MURDERS aka euthanizes patients this way: remove all food, hydration, treatment, and pump w morphine. Dead within a couple days to 2 weeks. He questioned all in charge and they said "it's the patients right - and besides HOSPICE is a separate company so "Catholic" hospital is not responsible." He says it's rampant nationwide.
I asked him about the Netherlands story (euthanizing babies) which has been out a while. He said US hospitals have been MURDERERING aka euthanizing babies for years. He has no concrete numbers but guesses it's in the thousands per year in the US.
Two websites to chew on:
http://www.hospicepatients.org/euth-center.html
http://cureltd.blogspot.com/
There are many others.
For the record, I am Catholic and I love my Church. There are those in authority within the Catholic Church allowing this at "Catholic" institutions; and I believe that it is at least as bad, probably worse at completely secular ones.

Thanks for the links. I'm looking over them now.
This is all very distubing to me. I don't know for certain how Terri's situation will end up, but I have an idea now. The only good thing that can come of it is the enlightenment about what is going on around us.
To: truthseeker2
What you posted was written in 2000, we must asume Mr. Becker is dead now.

As I and others have said before, this is about more than just Terri. This is a test case, a trial balloon. A test by those who value connivance to those who value life. I fear that we as a nation have failed this test.
This does happen every day. I saw in the nursing home my grandparents were in people sitting in the shadows, slowly wasting away.
We as a country have allowed the children to be sacrificed, and now the infirm. Soon it will be all who don't meet a definition of "quality of life".
I am a Lutheran of German descent. I remember what happened in the country of my ancestors when men turned their face from God and tried to build a twisted Utopia on Earth. I remember those like Bonhoffer and Max Kolbe who took a stand with Christ and with life. I fear that soon we in the US will have to make similar choices.

Yes SO True! And the dear sweet (phoney baloney) well intentioned Christian Hospice workers who have murder on their mind for your loved one will NOT tell you what their intentions are unless they are sure you are both on the same page, they are very much angels of death with secret intentions. This is a fact. Leave a relative alone with one of these wackos and they will have your loved one's mind spinning in circles of guilt in one day. Scratch that surface VERY hard to find out exactly how prolife this "caregiver" is and settle for nothing less but very prolife.
