I guess it escapes them that Kansas and Nebraska were anti-slavery.

We had a thread about this earlier today too. Apparently, the people who are gleefully JUMPING on this bandwagon took a class in American History-lite.

The demographic changes in our country since the Civil War are mind-boggling. Millions of northerners have moved to the South and Southwest. They have children and grandchildren who have also moved around the country. We move constantly.

The great and diversity-tolerant minds on the left ought to have someone who could point this fact out to the younger reactionaries, eh?

It's silly how crazy people can get. The electoral map is pretty much what you'd expect if a Massachusetts liberal ran for President on the Democratic ticket (as happened in 1988). In 1992 and 1996, when the Democrats nominated Southerners the map looked very different.

In general, people tend to read too much into such maps. Some of these races were very close. A shift of a few percentage points would have changed the map considerably. And the the county-by-county map gives a very different view of the situation. Every politician has his base -- areas where he does better than others -- so I wouldn't read too much into such maps.
