We've gone back and forth on the question whether Osama bin Laden is dead. Today, Matthew Heidt of Froggy Ruminations argues that bin Laden is an ex-terrorist:

When OBL was vapourised on that moonless night there were not enough parts left of him, his bodyguards and the donkeys they were riding to forensically ID. They simply disappearred in a cloud of red vapour and dust much like the poor inhabitants of the Twin Towers...justice was served....

Zawahiri decided that it was better to just pretend that UBL was alive because there was no plausible martyr story to tell.

So, what's Kerry's motivation for doing the same thing?

I believe Bush is honest, and I believe he would say one way or the other if he knew. Having said that, I believe it's in our best interests not to push to hard to verify for sure that he's dead if we have good reason to suspect it (and I suspect we do).

The War on Terror is a "War on ALL terrorism with global reach." It isn't a war on al Qaeda, and it isn't a manhunt for a single person. Kerry has made clear on all three debating occasions that he will consider the war on terrorism over when he can declare al Qaeda is finished, and he has intimated that he will declare al Qaeda finished as quickly as it's credible to do so. The capture or verified killing of UBL would be such an occasion. Too many Americans share his views. Let this sleeping dog lie--Dead, or Alive. This is a war we need to win, and we can't afford to let the sissies declare victory after just one battle.

"I'll wait for something a little more concrete before I make up my mind."

Perhaps you should wait for something a little more "granite" than that. LOL

Keep in mind that when our DOD and Military folks talk about "severe terrain" and "high altitude" that's almost techno speak. These caves can be at altitudes higher than a helo can fly and incline and roughness can be such that motorized vehicles can't get there.

So if a huge "bunker buster" blasted a cave complex to pea gravel, it will never become "concrete." I.E. UBL will never be found.

Oh! Yes, I have been there. I traveled from Peshawar to Kabul through the Kyber Pass on a train called the Kyber Mail some years ago.

Suppose Osama is dead. We know it, but for the reasons you've listed, choose not to tell. What of Al Qaeda? Surely, someone in that organization knows he's dead, or haven't seen him at the staff meetings for three years.....

What's Al Qaeda's reason to hide Bin Laden's death or disappearance?

Maybe they don't know about it. Perhaps we've got a very good look-alike, for example from Pakistani intelligence, planted in the organization. Okay, that's a bit far-fetched. But what if...they're unsure of his whereabouts because they haven't heard or seen his body or his capture? They don't want to start a fallacious rumor of his demise. Quashing such a rumor might require him to reveal himself to the Arab world, which in turn would give the United States valuable intelligence.

But maybe al-Qaida doesn't want to admit defeat. Perhaps they don't want to announce their new leadership. Maybe there's a crisis over who should succeed bin Laden. Maybe he's officially hiding from all but the top execs so that no one will give away his location. Who knows? There are plenty of reasons on both sides to hide bin Laden's demise.
