Pheobe Debates The Theory of Evolution
Original scene from the show... Friends. ^ | NA | NA

Posted on 07/24/2003 1:55:39 PM PDT by Mr.Atos

I was just lisening to Medved debating Creationism with Athiests on the air. I found it interesting that while Medved argued his side quite effectively from the standpoint of faith, his opponents resorted to condescension and beliitled him with statements like, "when it rains, is that God crying?" I was reminded of the best (at least most amusing)debate that I have ever heard on the subject of Creationism vs Evolution, albeit a fictional setting. It occurred on the show, Friends of all places between the characters Pheobe (The Hippy) and Ross (The Paleontologist). It went like this...

Pheebs: Okay...it's very faint, but I can still sense him in the building...GO INTO THE LIGHT MR. HECKLES!!

Ross: Whoa, whoa, whoa. What, uh, you don't believe in evolution? Pheebs: Nah. Not really. Ross: You don't believe in evolution? Pheebs: I don't know. It's just, ya know, monkeys, Darwin, ya know, it's a, it's a nice story. I just think it's a little too easy.

Ross: Uh, excuse me. Evolution is not for you to buy, Phoebe. Evolution is scientific fact. Like, like, the air we breathe, like gravity... Pheebs: Uh, okay, don't get me started on gravity.

Ross: You uh, you don't believe in gravity? Pheebs: Well, it's not so much that ya know, like I don't *believe* in it, ya know. It's just...I don't know. Lately I get the feeling that I'm not so much being pulled down, as I am being pushed.

Ross: How can you NOT BELIEVE in evolution? Pheebs: [shrugs] I unh-huh...Look at this funky shirt!!

Ross: Well, there ya go. Pheebs: Huh. So now, the REAL question is: who put those fossils there, and why...?

Ross: OPPOSABLE THUMBS!! Without evolution, how do YOU explain OPPOSABLE THUMBS?!? Pheebs: Maybe the overlords needed them to steer their spacecrafts!

Pheebs: Uh-oh! Scary Scientist Man!

Pheebs: Okay, Ross? Could you just open your mind like, *this* much?? Okay? Now wasn't there a time when the brightest minds in the world believed that the Earth was flat? And up until what, like, fifty years ago, you all thought the atom was the smallest thing, until you split it open, and this like, whole mess o' crap came out! Now, are you telling me that you are so unbelievably arrogant that you can't admit that there's a teeny, tiny possibility that you could be wrong about this?!?

Pheebs: I can't believe you caved. Ross: What? Pheebs: You just ABANDONED your whole belief system! I mean, before, I didn't agree with you, but at least I respected you. Ross: But uh.. Pheebs: Yeah...how...how are you gonna go in to work tomorrow? How...how are you gonna face the other science guys? How...how are you gonna face yourself? Oh! [Ross runs away dejected] Pheebs: That was fun. So who's hungry?

No true Scotsman doesn't like haggis.

Your reference will go unappreciated with this crowd, I'm afraid. I'll help them out http://www.geocities.com/b_r_a_d_99/noscotsman.htm

Questioning Genesis or pointing out contradictions it has with contemporary scientific knowledge is not rejecting God or His law.

Amen, brother!

Can we defer this a couple of days? I'm trying to keep it cool here, and this is a very hot button issue.

I understand your point, but I think you're missing mine.

Christianity is not compatible with slavery. The more educated one is and the more one is familiar with what Jesus taught, the less one would approve of the practice.

A true Christian must follow Jesus. I believe that there were true, knowledgable Christians who were slaveowners -- they find themselves owning slaves and out of weakness or uncertainty as to what freeing them would do, keep them.

I don't believe there ever was a true, knowledgable Christian who was a slave trader -- someone who went out and stripped another of his freedom for his own gain.

I'd wager few feel comfortable in naming names or spreading gossip. Also, if you won't name names and yet demand the same of the other side, it, well, doesn't look very good.

I have more indepth personal knowledge of the poster(s) mentioned in this thread, and I truly am afraid of these/that posters'/poster's abilities and for my safety. (I am afraid even to name a number here.)

Will talk over the previous encounters in FRmail if you wish, and if you are willing to listen carefully and to not to share with anyone except with perhaps BettyBoop. You two, on either side, are the only ones I'd trust with this information to not to spread to the public and all. Then you can use your own judgement to decide if it's true or if I'm a complete liar.

all you did was expose patty's stupid graphic posting and a swift scroll reveals js1138's futile attempt to claim text outside designeduniverse.com was ON designeduniverse.com.

surely you meant to post a different link, less evo-embarrassing link.

Refusal to accept an apology and worse, revising the apology to something other than what was apologized for.

sever head trauma or evo-agenda?
let the lurker decide

Sorry, meant SOME, didn't mean to imply that all of the evo & crevo posters mentioned are secretly out to get me. :-P I'm not naming a number, either.

The story of John Newton is very famous. He was a slave trader, he had an "amazing grace" experience, and became an abolitiionist.

His testimony is that he was a wretch whose heart was taught to fear while a slave trader.

the ol' "i been here longer" canard.

totally meaningless, except to reveal evo-behavior was around long before we showed up to pimpslap it, deservedly.

typical reverse rant. evos want to feign superiority while holding the bible underwater in hopes it will drown.

quite pathetic and fruitless

The very definition of a disruptor is someone who is motivated by a desire to stop a debate or turn it aside from it's original topic.

Looking first at motivation...

Now, regarding tactics...

Well put.

As the lawyers say,

Res ipsa loqauitur

As old wisdom says,

The devil can quote Scripture

I don't have any quotes, but the original sophists from Greece come to mind: they knew how to 'win' arguments using rhetoric, but were uninterested in the truth.

His "sanctification" took a while. But, as per RWP's request, this is a topic I can drop.

totally bogus

catholic bashing accusation is merely a thinly veiled attempt to offer some cover for the daily christian bashing.

I could much more into what really happened with who was bashing who, and who was using catholicism in place of mommy's skirt to hide behind while tossing poop grenades

exemplifies the utter blindness of the evos in theur posting behavior

typical projectionism

it's a no brainer that evos wish to say, stoop and do anything they feel free to but oh lawdee if it's given back to them, the sky is falling and they demand someone put the opposition back in the box.

pathetic

His "sanctification" took a while

It was extraordinarily profound on par with Paul on the Damascus Road. But no prob to drop discussion till later.

evos seem to have a fixation on the feminine.

more dish but can't take

i see plenty of female bashing by the evos. no reservations at all

if you wanna act like a girl, don't cry like one when observed being one

vadey is the worst in your face offender

any complaints from him have to override his own behavior and that simply isn't possible.

he cancels himself out
