Libertarians Look for a State to Call Their Own. (Free State Project)
The Everett Herald (WA) | 2/23/2003 | reprint from the Baltimore Sun

Plans are under way for an invasion of New Hampshire. Or Wyoming. Or maybe Delaware, Montana or Alaska. Sparsely populated and independent in spirit, they're all attractive targets for a certain bloodless coup in the making.

Within the next several years, according to the plan, 20,000 Libertarians would move to a single state and begin infiltrating. They'd get jobs, join civic groups, get elected and take a hatchet to taxes and laws. In this utopia called the Free State Project, schools would be severed from the state, gun-control laws abolished, drugs legalized, health and social services privatized, and most federal aid rejected. Government's only job would be to protect against "force and fraud."

Sorry. I should have warned people about such commonplace sights in oh-so-tolerant moral-liberal San Francisco. Feel lucky the internet doesn't transmit the smells of urine-soaked and vomit-encrusted sidewalks.

My 'H'rag is all worn out.

Actually, tpaine, that was clever and mildly humorous. Sometimes you surprise me.

This is still a free country, supposedly. Would you be advocating that laws be made to prevent such a "coup detat"? Are these criminal actions, -- "that will significantly change the economic landscape of the immediate region, including employment, land value and people's lives, in many cases against their will" ?

Well, I wouldn't call it "liberating".

To be thoroughly principled, the freeloaders and parasites should leave America entirely, and start their own nation somewhere else. We doubt they would want to be so unprincipled as to not pay their fair share for national defense, and will recognize their freeloaderism and leave forthwith.

They've posted this VERY old news, yet again ? This is far and away too, too funny ! LOL

" LORD OF THE FLIES " is a glimse at Libertarians' UTOPIA. Still and all, they are incapable of managing a picnic; let alone take over a state.

They sure don't mind using nice, clean, public parks paid for with 'extorted' tax dollars.

I was derided a couple of years ago when I *seriously* opined that the Libertarians should all move to Vermont and take it over. It's a small enough state where they could actually have a significant number of voters, it is not afraid to tackle unpopular issues (same-sex marriages) and two of their three members of Congress are already not Democrats and not Republicans. Besides, their governor is spending all his days campaigning outside the state.

The Libertarians can experiment with many of their theories at the state level and see if they can actually make a go of it. We conservatives won't mind since Vermont is pretty much a dead-from-the-neck-up state politically already. It's a perfect fit.

But I got such hateful answers from the Libertarians for suggesting that this was just not worth their effort that I got the impression most Libertarians would far prefer to bitch about government than to actaully attempt to govern.

In the end, the lone independent will leave, grumbling that all the rest aren't visionary - and he will be the one they choose to run as a candidate for statewide or national office.

Well duh! He's not there to defend himself...
