Teenager Shot By Drug Agents Dies

14-Year-Old Taken Off Life-Support

Posted: 8:51 a.m. CST February 12, 2003

SAN ANTONIO -- A teenage girl who was shot by Drug Enforcement Administration agents died Tuesday night at Wilford Hall Medical Center.

Ashley Villarreal (pictured, left), 14, was taken off life-support equipment after she was declared brain dead from a gunshot wound she suffered to the back of her head late Sunday night.

DEA officials and San Antonio police officials said that agents fired four rounds at a car Villarreal was driving because the vehicle was speeding toward them and they suspected the girl's father, a suspected drug dealer, was in the vehicle trying to get away. Joey Angel Villarreal, who was the subject of surveillance that night, was not in the car with his daughter. He ended up turning himself in to authorities Monday.

"It was no mistake," said Daniel Robles, a family friend who was in the car with the teen. "It was no accident."

Robles said the agents were not wearing rain gear during the surveillance and claimed that they allegedly boxed in Villarreal's car and opened fire.

"These are professionals," Robles said. "There's nothing professional about this."

Law officers declined to respond to Robles' version or to discuss details of the case Tuesday, citing a pending investigation.

Robles, who was with family members when they said they last goodbyes to the teen, said he promised her that his version of the story will come out.

"Ashley's dead. They took her life. Nothing's gonna bring it back," Robles said.

You sell a drug that kills people and in turn your daughter gets killed

I reject the notion im morally liable for anything my ancestors did.

Why do all you legalizers take the word of druggies and their hangers on? I don't think you would trust a junkie in your own life.

Where are the alleged "druggies" and when or where was their version even introduced into the discussion?

BS there was no other man and the car wasn't coming towards her otherwise the bullethole would not be in the back of her head. This was cold blooded murder.

Actually, alcohol kills many thousands more people every year. Alcohol is truly a killer drug and makes most other drugs appear tame in comparison.

Then by all means legalize cocaine so it can up it's scores. Be more competitive. And legalize heroin, crack and meth while you're at it. No big deal when you find your 14 year old daughter shooting up H instead of having a beer. RIGHT???

What a shameful waste of a beautiful life.

This was a criminal act, and these DEA agents of death should pay for it.

Dear ol' drug dealing dad killed her.
DEA agents killed her!
He killed people by selling cocaine.
Where is the evidence? Where is his arrest for murder? Where are the bodies of his victims?
I'll say it again and again, your "rationalizing" isn't working.

Facts are not in yet. You should be ashamed to trust druggies so early. Next time you have trouble don't call the police, call a drug pusher......

There you go again with the misrepresentation. I haven't seen or heard a "druggie" weigh in at all. All of the accounts in the story came from the neighbors. Are you assuming that because they aren't licking the boots of the DEA that they are "druggies"?

Eyewitness account:

Robles, 44, described himself as the household handyman who lives with the teenagers Ashley and Adrianna and their grandmother on South San Joaquin Street.

Robles said that he had waxed the Eclipse earlier in the day and that at the end of the night, Ashley told him she wanted to move it to the back where it could be covered and protected from dew.

They had to drive around the block to reach the rear entrance. And, like a lot of youths too young to have a license to drive, Ashley wanted to move it herself, Robles said.

Once they backed out of the driveway, a car tailed closely behind. Ashley said she thought they were being followed and sped up.

Another vehicle, a pickup, came at them from the front, Robles said. When Ashley veered right onto Motes Street, they collided.

Robles said the agents opened fire immediately after the crash and didn't identify themselves until afterward.

"The first shot was fired and Ashley didn't say a word," he said. "She didn't scream or anything and I knew she was hit with the first shot."

Robles contended Ashley never tried to back up unless, somehow in the collision, the automatic transmission was knocked into reverse. And he insisted that there was no way for the car to endanger the agents.

"How could they feel threatened when we were jammed in between (their vehicles) like a sandwich?" he said.

Officials declined to respond to Robles' version or to discuss details of the case Tuesday, citing the pending investigation.

After the gunfire, Robles said, the agents pulled him out through the passenger side and handcuffed him. Then they reached in and lay Ashley on the grassy curb.

"They knew. I could see it. They had made a big mistake,

You need to learn how to comprehend what you read. I saw video of the scene, there were bullet holes in the front windshield and the back windshield. It was obvious to my eyes that her vehicle was shot from the front and the back. Stop telling lies about what happened.

Can I see a link to this video? Was it a vehicle of the event or the "scene".

Actually, if all drugs were legalized and education ruled the day, there would be a lot less loss of life, as all the thousands of gang killings of innocents too, would all come to a halt. All the mistaken shooting of innocents by LEOs would come to a halt etc.

My point is, is that the WOD is not working, and will never work. Just aint going to happen IMHO.

Could it be that you're full of bull-puckey? A boot-licker?

Could it be that I live in San Antonio and you don't? Could it be that I saw the breaking story of this incident on the evening news? Could it be that I saw video of the scene after it happened? Could it be that I'm just repeating what was reported on the news? Could it be that your letting your mouth run without thought? I don't have a horse in this race. I just posted what I heard and saw on the local news here in San Antonio. There are 2 sides to every story and those that are one-issue posters love to dance in the blood of every person the police shoot regardless if the shoot was justified or not. Believe it or not I'm on your side regarding the war on drugs (read my FR homepage).

The DEA believed they were trying to escape and they blocked the road with their vehicles. The young lady at this point accelerated and headed towards one of the agents. This agent fired 2 rounds at the vehicle striking the front windshield.
Snip...From the video of the scene this shoot was at very close range so I can believe the agents thought they didn't have time to avoid the oncoming car and so they fired in self-defense.
Pretty extensive analysis from just a video of the scene. Did someone shoot a live feed of this for you to see all of what you saw?
Hmmmm...at "very close range". Were the vehicles "sandwiching the car" in the video you saw or were the vehicles "up the street" blocking the road?

Yeah but the thing is she didn't. The jackboots are full of crap the bullethole is in the back of her head even though they allege the car drove towards them.

Ever hear of "reverse?"
