The Mexican Consulate in Indianapolis will be open for business Monday. It's an office that will serve a group of people that's growing rapidly in our city and state. Mayor Bart Peterson's office has worked for about two years with the Mexican government and the state of Indiana to get this consulate opened.
You don't have to look hard to see why the consulate is needed. Drive down Washington Street a few miles west of downtown, and you'll see the fruits of our Hispanic and Latino community's labor. Shop after shop, sign after sign in Spanish. There are now some 34,000 Latinos and Hispanics in Indianapolis, and 60% of them are Mexican.
"We have an education system that welcomes the immigrants and we like the way we are treated because we find that the American community is welcoming in general," said Roberto Curci, La Guia Magazine.
The city even has two publications geared toward this growing community. "The Voice of Indiana," a bilingual newspaper and "The Guide of Indianapolis," a magazine for Hispanics and Latinos. There's even a new Hispanic and Latino yellow pages.
Local businesses are forging ties with that community. Kroger just donated a van to the Hispanic Center of Indianapolis to thank them for translation help that the center has provided for the grocery chain.
"As we change and we are changing as a city, I think it was important for business to recognize that and we have recognized it," said Jeff Golc, Kroger.
The change will continue. Just ask the woman who helps run the grocery store on West Washington Street. New Hispanic and Latino customers come in for her authentic products all the time.
"Like once in a while there will be somebody new that comes. You know, like, "Oh, we just moved here and we came to see how it is." So yeah, we always get new people that come here," said Irasema Delgado, store manager.
The Mexican Consulate will serve three states: Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. It will serve as the Mexican government's primary link with those states on issues such as immigration, trade and economic development.

Aaah, so I was right, you are likely an employer of illegals and sympathize with them even though they are here illegally. I knew there had to be some agenda. Discussion over before it began(sorry, watching football, taking care of kids and posting at the same time--still trying to read through the thread--just fyi!)

I'm sorry but a sympathizer to illegal activity no matter how justified it may seem is an embarrassment to FR and America.

I blame the government too punch. They are creating animosity for an ethnicity that did not have to happen if they controlled the borders and did not offer welfare programs to the extent they do to those breaking our laws. I, like discostu, have Mexican friends and family, but unlike discostu having sympathy for their plight does not mean I give our government a free pass to continue bad programs or excuse the illegal behavior that gets them here in the first place.

Once again, believe there is an illegal problem and that most illegals live in questionable conditions and you are branded a bigot and have to hear some fanatical rantings that you believe that hispanics are inferior and can't do positive things. Very original.

Well I mentioned it to and I have yet to report anyone to a moderator. You couldn't be projecting your own behavior on others could you?
BTW, things don't have to be said outright to be understood, but I guess you meant narrow minded to be a complement right and had no implication to it all. Yeah..ok..

I am so glad places like Indianapolis are now experiencing this titanic, government sponsored immigration disaster. I mean, this really makes me happy. For the longest time, it was always the southwest, Texas, Arizona, California, etc.
Now it's in your backyard. Oh, and you can bet, YOU AINT SEEN NOTHING YET!
Maybe this will wake up some of the folks in your area of the country. We weren't kidding when we told you a massive invasion was headed your way. So many that they bring along their own Consulate's with them for representation! LOL!
Now you two can run around and try to convince everyone that having all of your business signs in foreign languages, and that a huge, *growing* percentage of the population of Indianapolis doesn't even speak English, is good for Indianapolis and the rest of the country. You two really need to know how naive that looks.
Most of the people reading this thread don't buy into you two attempting to sugarcoat and mimimize this invasion of millions, and I would bet the rent, that even you two don't buy it.

Forget it Rodger...CWO doesn't seem to get that massive influx of immigrants has the same impact to schools that say housing development unhindered does. So am I also a bigot to fight the overdevelopment in my community or to vote down school levies when overdevelopment is left unchecked? Which group pray tell am I targeting there in this affluent 90% anglo neighborhood when I am fighting to slow down more homes for affluent anglos? He can't see beyond wanting to find a bigot that he doesn't understand that sheer numbers of students affects the schools and this is an nationality that by their cultural norms and standards bring with them a lot of children to inundate the school systems. I fight this kind of inundation no matter what ethnicity or situation it comes in because left unchecked it destroys neighborhoods, not builds them. But let's not let these facts stand in the way of the few here who want to pretend that anyone with anything negative to say about immigration or overcrowding schools is a bigot.

"YOU AINT SEEN NOTHING YET!" Haven't read the whole thread yet...BUT
Do people in the rest of the country have to listen to ENGLISH and SPANISH instuctions when calling a utility-phone, electic or cable co?
That really irritates me.....especially if I have to listen to spanish almost immediately and I have NO IDEA what they are saying.....
ALSO do you all get your sample ballots in both english and spanish???
To: glory
Hey did you hear the one about how an endless massive influx of Mexican migrants is just like the limited (it ended) influx of Irish over 100 years ago? I understand that's all one needs to "know" about this topic.

Whatever, Joe. People are welcome to stop by Indianapolis and see for themselves. We are convenient to many people driving cross-country.
No point in arguing about it. People can either believe me or they can believe you. Time will tell who is right.
To: SunnyUsa
Oh, yeah, everthings in Spanish, or soon will be, even 15 percent of everyones cable channels, major radio stations, your bills, the forms your kids bring home from school will eventually be in Spanish, if they are not already, and on and on.
What I really find bizarre is that a *few* so-called conservatives on this thread think this is all just wonderful! LOL! It's the new breed conservative.
And when President Bush goes to Indianapolis and gives speeches in Spanish, they will swoon with delight!
To: Joe Hadenuf
When it gets bad enough, maybe we can sit around and post about how great it would be if Indianapolis had an earthquake and fell off into the ocean.

All correspondence coming from the DMV and the local schools will also be in both English and Spanish. And the spanish-speaking will act like there's something wrong with you if you don't speak spanish.

Why wait! Just go to large regions of Texas, California, Arizona, Georgia, Tennessee, Oregon, Florida, Colorado, etc.
Time has already told Ms Marple. I guess you folks in Indiana will take a little longer to wake.
To: SCalGal
LOL! Amazing aint it?
