A mother-of-four was handcuffed in front of her children and hauled off to jail after she allowed her 11-year-old son to walk less than a mile into a small town.
Brittany Patterson went to drive her eldest son to a medical appointment on October 30, 11-year-old Soren, was supposed to tag along - but was not around when it was time to leave
She had figured he was simply playing in the woods or visiting his grandmother, Patterson told the outlet, noting that her father lives with them and her mother and sisters live just two minutes away.
But it turned out Soren decided to walk to downtown Mineral Bluff, a town of just 370 people that is less than a mile from their home.
He was spotted alongside the road by a woman who asked if he was OK, and even though he replied that he was, the woman called police
A female sheriff's deputy then picked up the boy, and called Patterson.
'I know the roads and know he is mature enough to walk there without incident,' Patterson said of the street that has a speed limit of up to 35mph.
The deputy, however, 'kept mentioning how he could have been run over, or kidnapped or "anything" could have happened,'
The deputy ultimately drove Soren home and left him with his grandfather.
around 6.30pm that night, the deputy showed up with another officer, handcuffed Patterson and brought her to jail, where she was fingerprinted, had her mugshot taken and was put in prison garb, according to an online fundraiser set up for her legal bills.
She said she did not understand what was happening, as she had grown up in the area with unsupervised time to wander and play, and was raising her children that way as well.

Yep! After a while you don’t even bother..................
Letter from the Harper Valley PTA...
In first and 2nd grade we walked 3/4 of mile to our school, on a country road, even in the winter. Did they lock up my parents? No.
“Yep! After a while you don’t even bother..................”
It does have an impact on your attitude towards ‘making new friends’, doesn’t it. Add to that the fact that I’ve been fiercely independent for most of my life. Question is... was that a result or was I that way all along. So many questions....
If the kid lived in Chicago, he would have taken a city bus to his school long before that age. Walking to the bus stop and transferring busses before being let out 5 blocks from school. These cops are crazy. And this kids mother is hot. Maybe the cop wanted her in his cell.
When I was 11 years old, the only rule was that I had to be home for dinner by 6 pm — and no smoking or taking the car for a drive. I often walked or biked to the village center (about 1 mile) and to elementary school (2 miles) without adult supervision. No big deal.
I rode my bike about a mile to school when I was 9. The area was very nice but it’s crime ridden these days. Would never let my child out of my sight there now.
I smell somebody from Atlanta who just moved there recently. My in-laws had a cabin in Mineral Bluff it never struck me as a wrap the kids in cotton wool place.
When I was in the 4th grade I walked to and from school through Fernbank forest. Uphill, both ways ;-)
What crime was the mother charged with??
Exactly.
Did they heat it up so you wouldn’t dilly-dally?
When I was 5 years old, I walked over 1 mile to and from kindergarten daily.
When I was 10 I was riding my brand new 10-speed (oooh, ahhhh) all over the county. Gone all day, some Saturdays. I think many (most?) of us of a certain age have similar stories. Most children today, I think, do not know freedom.
The mother needs to sue for false arrest and malicious prosecution. I hope she makes millions out of the lawsuits and the city has a new sheriff’s deputy.
Where is Mr. Patterson, father of four?
When I was 10 years old I was cultivating corn on a B John Deere tractor over one mile from home.
I knew were he lived--about 6 blocks from the school and half-way to my house.
When I got home, my mother asked me why I left school early. I told her. She shrugged.
That was the end of it.
We don’t need pics of mom and son.
We need piccs and names of cop and da and social worker and phone numbers and names of their bosses
This needs to blow up so these overreaching jerseys across the country will hesitate.
I hope this woman sues them all!
Same here. At 9:10 or 11, we would disappear for the day. One time the lady at the local airport chased us off the runway with a broom. We were riding bikes there. I walked 1000 miles a long creek beds looking for arrowheads.
