View from the Israeli streets: Ireland is 'not with us'

The man with the silver hair and sky blue shirt walked up to me in downtown Tel Aviv last Thursday and inquired, gently, what country I hailed from.

”Ireland,” I said.

He shook his head.

“You are not with us,” he replied, emphasizing the final two words.

Calmly, but with serious intent, he decried the Irish Government’s position on Israel by saying that politicians do not know what they are talking about.

The Irish media are just as bad, he said looking directly into my eyes. […]

Though reluctant to speak on the record, he did want to put me straight about Israel and what he saw as Ireland’s failures.

He contended that Ireland was “indirectly responsible” for the war in Gaza through its blind support for the Palestinian position.

He had a particular anathema for what he viewed as a media trope that there were two sides to the current conflict in Gaza.

There is Israel, he said, and then there is the butcherers. (sic) …

IIRC...on my travels...Libya was importing explosives into Ireland. Into Castleford, or nearby.

As a drunk Northern Irishman said to me years ago.

“Don’t EVER think “The Troubles” are ever over.

I’m ashamed to be Irish. Ireland is the land of my ancestors. To see them siding with the hamas pigs is an outrage

That’s about as real as their propaganda with respect to the late Savita Halappanavar.

The word of the Irish government, which under the EUSSR is merely a puppet government that gets its orders from Berlin via Brussels, is worthless.

I assume you're referring to the Mahmoud al-Mabhouh assassination incident from 2010, where it was alleged that not only were forged Irish passports used, but also British and Australian forgeries.

Both the UK and Australia expelled Israeli diplomats during that whole snafu, because they *both* concluded that their country's passports had been forged. This makes it more likely that the Irish passports were likewise forged.

Furthermore, as far as I'm aware, Israel never denied the accusations, only refusing to comment. (As compared to 2004, when New Zealand arrested two Israelis for trying to obtain New Zealand passports under false pretenses, for which Israel's government eventually apologized for in 2005. Or as compared to 1997, when Israel apologized for the use of fake Canadian passports in another attempted assassination op in Jordan.)

Even if you have no use for the Irish government (I sure don't), Israel's track record with regards to the use of forged passports speaks for itself.

Looks like David Levy, who apologized to Canada, leaned to the left, so one’s word remains questionable. And I always take left-wing sources with a grain of salt.

Israel’s deep dtate will prove deadlier to them than Hamas or any other Islamic entity.

Dude, it's public knowledge. People are quoted by name:

Israel apologizes for NZ passport affair - Ynet

"In June 2004, the New Zealand Government criticized Israel’s policy of bulldozing Palestinian homes and donated $534,000 to aid homeless Palestinians. More seriously, in mid-2004, Two suspected Mossad agents were jailed for three months and paid a $35,000 fine for illegally seeking to obtain New Zealand passports. High-level visits between the two countries were subsequently cancelled, visa restrictions imposed for Israeli officials, and an expected visit to New Zealand by Israeli president Moshe Katsav was cancelled. More than a year later, Israel apologized and New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark announced the resumption of normal diplomatic relations with Israel." - Jewish Virtual Library

"In March 2004, two Mossad agents were caught trying to fraudulently obtain New Zealand passports. They were sentenced to a NZ$50,000 fine (to be paid to charity) and a relatively light six months in prison. After the sentencing, a number of steps were taken to freeze diplomatic relations including a suspension of high-level visits, a requirement that Israelis visiting the country in an official capacity apply for visas, and a delay in approving the appointment of a new ambassador to Israel. "The New Zealand government views the act carried out by the Israeli intelligence agents as not only utterly unacceptable but also a breach of New Zealand sovereignty and international law," said Prime Minister Helen Clark at the time. In June 2005, Israel apologized for the incident, thus beginning the process of improving relations with the New Zealand government. The Israeli embassy in Wellington was reopened in October of that year." - The Jerusalem Post

"Mossad, Israeli's renowned and deadly intelligence agency, opted for Canadian passports when operatives murdered a Moroccan waiter in Norway in 1973 – thinking he was a Palestinian terrorist linked to the Munich Olympic massacre of Israeli athletes. Ottawa's outrage didn't stop Mossad from opting again to use Canadian passports – taken from from Canadian-Israeli dual nationals – as cover for a 1997 assassination attempt of Hamas's political chief, Khaled Meshaal, in Jordan." - The Globe and Mail

"In 1997, two Mossad agents were caught with phoney Canadian passports after a bungled assassination attempt of a Hamas leader in Jordan. Canada filed a formal protest and received assurances from Israel that its agents would never again use Canadian passports." - CBC

"Intelligence operatives for the Jewish state used forged Canadian passports as part of an attempt to assassinate a Hamas official in Jordan." - The Jewish News of Northern California

As far as official diplomatic relations go, nobody doubts that the passport forgeries actually happened.

More left-wing sources. Just like saying global warming is “common knowledge”.

Have a nice day.

Notwithstanding that you apparently believe Ynet, Jerusalem Post, and the Jewish Virtual Library are "left-wing" (if I wanted to go left-wing, I would have gone for Haaretz), here's the Times of Israel from a 2016 article casually referencing "In 2004, Clark imposed diplomatic sanctions on Israel after New Zealand convicted two Israelis of attempting to illegally obtain New Zealand passports through ties with organized criminal gangs. Clark said she had evidence tying the two Israelis to the Mossad, and called the attempt a violation of New Zealand sovereignty by the Israeli government. The Israelis, Uriel Zosha Kelman and Eli Cara, admitted to the charges but denied working for the Mossad. They were sentenced to six months in prison. Clark demanded an apology and an explanation from Israel. Ties were resumed in 2005 after Jerusalem issued an apology."

It's spoken of in such a ho-hum fashion, without any attempt at denial.

The National Post (a right-leaning source), when writing about the killing of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in 2014, casually recalls "Canada has traditionally reacted angrily at being drawn into Israeli covert operations. The government recalled its ambassador to Israel in 1997 after two Mossad agents used fake Canadian passports during an attempt to assassinate Hamas leader Khaled Mashal in Jordan."

If that's not good enough for you, how about the following excerpt from an actual Canadian parliamentary session in November 1998, wherein Preston Manning — as involved in Canadian conservative politics as any other — is on the record as follows: "Mr. Speaker, in September 1997 Canadian passports were illegally used by Israeli agents in an anti-terrorist operation. At that time the minister gave the House solemn assurances that this would never happen again. Now we have allegations that it did happen again, allegations that the minister apparently knew about but kept to himself. Are there any other allegations of this nature which the minister is aware of and yet has not disclosed to the House?"

I could go on.

What I find curious is your obstinacy against believing that Israeli spies use forged passports, as though it were somehow beyond the pale. The spies of other countries (America, China, Russia, Germany, Turkey, etc) do the same, which is why it causes diplomatic snafus when they get caught.

Why wouldn't Israeli spies, playing the same game of espionage, be subject to the same?

Times of Israel is also left wing. National Post was conservative under Conrad Black but not under Izzy Asper. This is a USA-based website JFTR, so Canadian “conservatism” is usually further left by contrast.

I’m not being “obstinate” by questioning your multifarious left-wing sources. I’m sorry if you find the burden of proof to be onerous. Have a nice day, like I said before.

You have literally provided nothing to support your apparent contention:

- That Israel’s row with Canada over forged passports in 1997 didn’t happen or was exaggerated,

- That Israel’s row with New Zealand over forged passports in 2004 didn’t happen or was exaggerated, and

- That Israel’s row with Ireland, the UK, and Australia over forged passports in 2010 didn’t happen or was exaggerated.

I’ve given you a panoply of sources from across the political spectrum, with quotes, and people speaking on the record, to support that these prior diplomatic incidents actually happened.

You claim that I “find the burden of proof to be onerous”, but you haven’t provided anything to the contrary, much less proof!

You seem so committed to the prospect that these incidents didn’t happen as described: I’m sure you have decent sources to support this contention of yours (because I can’t fathom why you would be so fixated on believing otherwise without solid evidence to support it).

I haven’t had to prove anything because the burden of proof is not on me.

I suppose saying “have a nice day” is something you do not understand? By that I mean I’m not interested in taking your thread hijack any further; this thread is not about what you are going on about, but instead about antisemitism in Ireland towards Israelis. Kindly stop replying; thanks.

That 1973 incident goes a long way toward explaining why Israel is almost universally despised in many western countries. The Mossad used fake Canadian passports to go to Norway and murder a Moroccan dude who they mistakenly believed was a Palestinian terrorist. Who the hell has the audacity to do that sh!t?

I see you still believe that.

Never mind lumping “western” countries together in a collectivist sense. And not sticking to the topic.

Opus?

I use “western” countries collectively because quite a few of them have dealt with that sort of outrage (as Ultra Sonic 007 has pointed out on this thread).

And I’m not deviating from the topic. My original post on this thread addressed the reason why there is no love lost between Ireland and Israel — which is EXACTLY what the article at the top of this thread is all about.

Opus?

No. Alberta’s Child. :-P

No, it’s not what the article is about. Please learn to read, and please learn some lessons about the depths of leftist deviousness; they are adept at making big lies bigger than you think they are.

I mean, if the Lillehammer Affair had been truly obscured or exaggerated by politics, I'm sure a pro-Jewish, pro-Israel advocacy group would set the record straight, right?
