Democrats are again claiming the Senate majority, but much of the chamber’s focus Tuesday is on the top Republican as Mitch McConnell becomes the longest serving Senate leader in history.
McConnell, 80, surpassed Montana Sen. Mike Mansfield’s record of 16 years as party leader when the Senate convened midday to begin the new Congress. While the Kentucky Republican has acknowledged he would prefer his own party to be taking charge — “the majority is better,” he says frequently — he celebrated his own personal milestone with a Senate floor speech looking back at party leaders and their different styles over the decades.
And Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., cemented a legacy of his own after winning a second term as leader and also being sworn in as the longest-serving senator from New York. Democrats will go into the new Congress with a 51-49 majority, with newly Independent Sen. Kyrsten Sinema receiving her committee assignments from Democrats. …

If McConnell retires can he appoint himself or another Rat?”
If McConnell dies or retires during his term of office Kentucky law provides for his party to send three replacement names to the Governor. The Governor will appoint one of the three.
Mitch has total control over the Kentucky GOP.
He’s a Senator as long as he wants to be.
Sixteen years. Downhill all the way.
Term limits NOW! But there will never be a law implementing term limits. If you were a fat and happy Congresscritter, helped along with bribes, etc., would you vote yourself out of the job?
My mother worked on the Hill as a secretary to a committee in the late 1930s/early 1940s. Even back then she said the Senate was an “old boys club.”
Symptom of the Seventeenth Amendment?
Enjoy it Mitch, you are gone in 2024. Conservatives in the Commonwealth have had their fill of you.
We can’t primary you bec you are the 900# gorilla. But we will Ditch Mitch in 2024. It’ll be painful voting a Dem into the Senate but ya gotta do what you gotta do.
I pray it’s not too late to save the Republic.
That was the purpose of Article V.
That would not be an action that saves the Republic.
Such actions would, at this point, have to come from other sources.
