King County Sheriff responds to audit revealing disproportionate amount of arrests made based on ethnicity

A King County audit released Tuesday revealed racial disparities in arrests and uses of force, a lack of comprehensive data to analyze the role of race in officer relations, and highlighted several steps the King County Sheriff’s Office can take to improve its equity and transparency.

Black people make up 7% of King County, but account for 25% of the arrest in the county, according to the report.

“This means black people are 350% more likely to be arrested by the King County Sheriff’s Office on a per capita basis,” Gee Scott, co-host of the Gee and Ursula Show on KIRO Newsradio, said on air.

“The auditor took the raw data, but in their audit, they do say they did not look at the individual situation,” said King County Sheriff Patti Cole-Tindall on the Gee and Ursula Show. “So we don’t know what the underlying facts were, and what led to the arrest or to the use of force. And I am committed to doing a thorough analysis to figure out what were those underlying facts.”

Cole-Tindall does believe that Seattle’s law enforcement can improve, and acknowledging the racial disparities is the first step to addressing this issue.

“I think it is important we need to start collecting the race data,” Cole-Tindall said. “But the other thing I didn’t mention earlier is there’s a county ordinance that prevents us from collecting race data, so that would need to be corrected.”

Cole-Tindall is referring to the King County Ordinance KCC 2.15.010.G. The King County Sheriff’s Office collects racial data on only about 4% of its service calls, according to the audit.

Hispanic residents of King County are 50% more likely to have force used on them, while Black people are 29% more likely to have force used on them. Meanwhile, white people are 35% less likely to experience use of force, according to the report.

“I did not thoroughly understand the methodology used by the auditor, we met with them a number of times,” Cole-Tindall said in response to the statistics. “And that’s why we need to do our own analysis that can complement what they have done. So I’m not suggesting that their numbers are incorrect. I’m saying that this picture is incomplete.”

Cole-Tindall also stressed that she believes her deputies don’t stop people based on their skin color, ethnicity, or socio-economic background.

The audit also referenced the amount of times forced was used; 619 times over a three-year period

The county was formed out of territory within Thurston County on December 22, 1852, by the Oregon Territory legislature and was named after Alabamian William R. King, who had just been elected Vice President of the United States under President Franklin Pierce.

Why is MLK's picture on the lecturn?

Lars Larson likes to break it down by gender...two of them. Says it isn’t fair that more men than women are in prison.

Reports based on fact... 7% causing 25% of the problem meaning they get arrested 350% more often.

You want to change that, change the reason why they commit the crimes. Which for the most part is lack of family, morality and self responsibility. That’s the same in every community.

Nothing racist about it.

Also, a disproportionate number of people with two hands and feet, were arrested, in comparison with those with only one of each.
This would indicate extreme institutional discrimination against people with two hands and feet. This must change!

Why can’t they say the truth: more crime is committed, proportionally, by America’s #1 certified victim group. The one that gets a capital letter which it doesn’t deserve.

Whites need to step it up and commit their share of crime. It’s not fair to make blacks do all the work.

Re: "I am so sick of the idea that arrest rates and incarceration rates should meet some kind of exact match to the overall population percentage."

That idea is the central foundation of Critical Race Theory.

Any "disparate outcome" (like more Black arrests than white arrests) is PROOF of white racism.

Get woke? Go broke!

Liberals claims this means we’re picking on blacks. Smart people know it means those blacks are unable to control themselves.

Irresponsible data release. Lije showing video of man being shot with no context that he was trying to kill a cop or someone at that moment.

Irresponsible.

Sherrif shoukd have promptly arrested every white journalist covering the story and shot a few of them to fix the numbers. Right?

That means no such thing. It's not like the police arrest people at random. Most people who are arrested thoroughly deserve it.

More likely, it means that blacks are 350% more likely to commit arrestable offenses.

They conveniently ignore the fact that blacks commit most of the crimes.

“One way to fix this is to start arresting white people in much greater numbers to balance the discrepancy. It won’t matter if those white people have committed any crimes or not as long as the numbers balance out.”

On my local news I swear they will show several mugshots of black males in various stages of prosecution for murder. Then, for racial balance, they’ll show a mugshot of a white meth head accused of...burglarizing unlocked cars.

Is there any chance that black people are 350% more likely to commit a crime? Wait... nah.

It cannot are the question since it ignored the underlying facts. Without the underlying facts, it’s impossible to know if there’s a racism problem or a community behavioral demographic problem. The problem assuming Latinos and blacks act the same as whites is the exact opposite of what woke, critical race theory, etc are telling us. A deep dive into the underlying facts of the cases is the only way to see if there’s disparate treatment by police.

I’m so sick of the idea that arrest rates and incarceration rates should meet some kind of exact match to the overall population percentage.

Release of such data is propagandist. It’s designed to inflame passions and advocate for a view that isn’t actually represented by this data. Without digging into the underlying facts you don’t know if there’s an actual racism issue or if it’s a community cultural issue. I suspect there might be common themes in the demographic backgrounds of those arrested regardless of race. That won’t predetermined outcomes though.

I suspect unstable family units, lack of a positive sense of community connection, employment stability, drug use in the home, educational engagement and poverty are risk factors for arrests but that’s not going to be determinative. Tolerance within the community for petty crimes or even violent crimes is probably a noticeable factor. That’s cultural.

Those are my theories. There are always outliers though. It’s not as simple as saying this group are more prone to arrest due to racist police with a naive data dump like this

I’ve posted it before and it seems like the Seattle auditor needs to read it - maybe several times so they get through their woke-ness:

Remove 2 certain ethnicities and crime plummets. Is that too hard for liberals to understand? (See tagline)

What ever happened to "MID-NITE-BASKET-BALL," thank you Bill Clintooon (spelling intended.)

In 1994, Bill Clintooon pushed for an anti-crime bill that would lead to 100,000 more police officers as well as a number of programs intended to "deter crime where it starts" by providing "community activities like midnight basketball."

You are correct. But this has been going on long before the formal public injection of CRT... (though we all know it’s been going on a lot longer).
