"Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it" is certainly true, but it's also true that "Those who do study history are doomed to be silenced by those who do not, but who have preconceived notions about it."
If the current narrative is that People-A enslaved People-B, then any talk of the fact that People-C enslaved People-A is considered horrifying.
Cleese has become something of a cranky old-man, but by God, he's earned it.
Cranky old man
I introduced Monty Python to my kids when they were in high school, early college years. Now in their 30’s, they were astonished to learn just how old John Cleese really is.
None of their skits would pass the social justice pearl clutchers these days. They were funny because they challenged the “polite” and puritanical society of the late 60’s but managed to be aired anyway. Now, they would be canceled.
Weren’t the Pythons go to Cambridge or Oxford? one of those fancy British universities. I think the late Terry Jones was an expert on Chaucer. These guys got good educations back when going to university meant something.
FU Cleese.
In an interview this clown once called Republicans ‘’racists’’.
“ If the current narrative is that People-A enslaved People-B, then any talk of the fact that People-C enslaved People-A is considered horrifying.”
When people who do whatever government tells them to do pretend they are not slaves they lose their sense of humor. Collectively. There is truth in humor. Above all, these people must squash the truth.
John Cleese is not a slave. He bought his property decades ago therefore he owes nothing. Most Americans, and most attendees and managers at SXSW, owe on their homes. They believe that they must do what they are told. Tgey don’t consider downsizing or otherwise breaking free. They don’t know they are slaves. Cleese’s joke goes over their heads.
