America's Most Popular Burger Now Costs 40% More

The iconic Big Mac has been the head honcho on the McDonald's menu since 1967. While the recipe has remained the same over the course of its 55-year lifespan, the price of the famous burger has dramatically changed over time. And currently, it costs 40% more than it did ten years ago.

According to CNBC, the Big Mac is, in many ways, a powerful demonstrator of the inflation Americans are currently going through. Since the demand for Big Mac spans the globe, The Economist even created the Big Mac index in 1986 to monitor the burger's price against other currencies. Known as "Burgernomics," the idea uses the price of the burger to illustrate the purchasing power parity—including the purchasing power of the U.S. dollar.

Now costing an average of $6.05 in the U.S., the price of a Big Mac has grown even more than the rising cost of living, which is up by 37% in a decade. Between Dec. 2020 and Dec. 2021 alone, inflation soared to 7%, which coincided with the 7% increase in the price of a Big Mac. As CNBC points out, a "healthy" rate of inflation is 2 to 3% on an annual basis.

But the Big Mac isn't alone. Countless popular fast-food items are facing price hikes amid supply chain disruptions.

I once wrote an article about the cost of a big mac meal vs the minimum wage in different states, I will have to see if I can find it.

I remember when they were $0.49, which was roughly the price of two gallons of gasoline, a quart of Havoline, or a box of 50 rounds of 22LR.

Crying shame. Media should be screaming about this from the rooftops, but how can you be a propaganda arm of the DNC if you actually report news and demand answers?

I once wrote an article

For whom?

Were you paid?

Were you asked to do so?

Just writing stuff does not make it an article.

So?

Gas costs me >10x what I paid in 1973.

Inflation needs to be held to 0%.

Yes, Big Macs cost more in high-minimum-wage areas—but not for the reason you think

Rather misleading headline. Especially when they include the word “now.” The cost hasn’t jumped up suddenly, but has increased by 40% compared to ten years ago. And during that time, as the article later explains, the cost of living has increased by 37%. So what’s the point of the article?

That being stated “popular” demonstrates why the 666 will be accepted. Conditioning.

Excluding labor, one Big Mac costs McDonald’s about $0.77 to make in the US. The same burger would cost about $6 to make at home if you sum up the individual costs of the ingredients. Keep in mind that this figure may vary by geographical location due to the different prices of goods and services around the world.

Many Biden voters use SNAP cards and don’t really care how much you pay for their chicken.

The point of the article is to condition the word “popular”

I think restaurant prices went up as volume decreased due to the pandemic.
And even as things are slowly returning to normal, prices aren’t coming down because of inflation expectations. And beef is certainly more expensive.
So it might be a while.

Meanwhile, I continue to cook burgers at home. I’ve perfected the smokehouse burger. I put slices of onion in the airfryer with some water or chicken stock and cook it for 3 minutes. Then I put the hamburger patties on top of that and cook them for 12 minutes. Some low carb mayonaise, burger, cooked onions, Cheddar and some Ray’s sugar free BBQ sauce. Pretty good.

I can make a better burger at home, and not even have to leave the house. The only thing I ever went to McDonald’s for was their breakfast sandwiches, and being retired, I was thrilled when they went to serving those sandwiches all day. When the lockdown ensued, they used that as an excuse to get rid of the practice. Here, they continued to serve at least, the muffin only (no biscuit) sandwiches until 2 p.m. They stopped doing that last year, and now the cut-off is 10:30 a.m. I won’t be going to McDonald’s ever again. Besides, they can never get your order right here, no matter if you go into the restaurant to order it, or use the drive-thru. There is no quality or consistent, accurate service at McDonald’s, yet they want you to pay more for it. Screw them.

"And the “meat” patties get smaller and smaller."

And they want you to pay more for the same poor service.

According to a CPI index I found online, 49 cents in 1967 is equivalent to 3.98 today. So at over 6 bucks the price is far higher than the rate of inflation over the years would suggest.

Of course there are other factors. Taxes and other costs of doing business may be much higher than decades ago.
