Little Rock, Arkansas news station KATV suspended anchor Chris May and meteorologist Barry Brandt for wearing Afro-style wigs in mid-September
The station also fired longtime news director Nick Genty
The wigs were part of a 'return to the 70s' segment in which on-air talent was supposed to sport looks popular in the 1970s as temperatures dropped
It was heavily criticized by a local activist who said that a white person wearing an Afro wig is a perpetuation of 'systemic racism
In a statement, officials for KATV said they condemned the stunt
Sinclair Broadcast Group Vice President John Seabers also met with members of the National Association of Black Journalists in the aftermath to apologize
He said the company is now working to hire more staff members of color
'We apologize to all viewers who were rightfully offended by the segment, and we promise to enact and enforce new measures to prevent future incidents from occurring,' he said in a statement.

Walgreen’s stores in Tampa and Chicago have pulled the “Chia Obama” from their shelves, after some customers complained the plants were racist.
My hair decided to go curly when I was in my 30s so I would just towel dry and fluff it with my fingers and everyone thought I had a perm or wave.
It may have been juvenile, but I’m not convinced it was racist. You don’t fire a 20 year employee over something that isn’t clearly racist.
Gilbert is actually one of the first to be cancelled for a joke, during Bobo's 1st term. Lost a ridiculously lucrative job as the voice of the AFLAC duck [Youtube link]. Have always thought this was a #CancelCulture trial balloon/test case to see what the reaction would be.

I remember the 70’s well. Many whites wore their hair afro style. It looked silly on them back then, and it looks silly on them now.
I will never forget a Hippie I saw in Tulsa. A red afro, a red fuzzy beard, and a head band. Dark glasses.
His head looked like a ball of red fuzz with dark glasses.

There’s a British guy who is hiking 1200 miles down the east coast raising money and awareness of a rare genetic disorder that afflicts his daughter.

Even Anne Murray had one for awhile, and it looked really good on her. I remember I bought a wig that looked just like hers, because I liked it.

Back in the late 70s early 80s I just used to stick my head out the car window to dry it on the way to work and it would turn into the “obligatory Hendrix perm”.
