When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans there was a brief moment of shocked compassion before racial anxieties flooded the Internet. Victims of the disaster were quickly recast as looters, criminals, and layabouts. They were government dependents seeking even more entitlements now that they were bona fide survivors. Some of these hideous opinions drew on the physical evidence of the bad character of hurricane survivors: their size. The mostly black bodies crowding the Superdome, getting on rafts, and being carried away by helicopters, were too large for online critics. Obesity, while common in the US and over-represented in the South, was conflated with blackness. Black bodies fleeing New Orleans were not only linked to historic stereotypes of menace and criminality but also slothfulness, helplessness, and a tropical torpidity unwelcome in hard-working America.
African Americans are more likely to be obese in the United States than their white counterparts. The same is true for Hispanics. For some conservatives, that may be an indictment. For the rest of us, it is a public health problem. The rise in obesity in the U.S. is an epidemic and much of the root causes lie in poverty, a condition more prevalent in communities of color. In many U.S. cities, bodegas serve dinner in the form of chips and soda to low-income people living nearby who have no access to neighborhood supermarkets. For those without much money or options, fast food can be a blessing: a full meal that is quick and affordable in a safe and predictable setting. Yet, these very meals are one of the countrys biggest public health menaces. Filled with fat and sugar, fast food is contributing greatly to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.....

Fast food in general is not cheaper than cooking healthy, economical foods at home. And if only indulged in occasionally, they are not especially bad for you or fattening.
The issue is one of initiative and industriousness. But also one of intelligence and having your life enough in order to be orderly about your food.
Have them call Moochelle Obummer. She’ll grt them out of their food deserts and over to her mansion and serve them wonderful arugula surprises.
The thing is Mississippi got just as much damage from Katrina. People totally forgot about it.
When you mention Katrina, it is always just NOLA, and the 9th ward (if I remember correctly).
No access to supermarket...??
Yeh - couple years ago in Newark opened brand new
supermarket. All sort of speeches about giving poor
access to good fresh food
Closed 2 years later - nobody in neighborhood bothered
to shop there......
You might be including the meth class there...
I see from the article that under EVIL Nixon, the SBA tried to give a whopping 40% of small biz loans to minority businesses, and not even enough applied to fill that quota. Quite a leg up, I’d say.
If the poor would only watch the Food Network, they would learn that arugula is “peppery and delish.”
They should appreciate it or else.

They blame everyone for their BS. Take the damn EBT card plus section 8 housing and all freebies away. We call it WORKING FOR A LIVING. It was even a SONG.
Quite so. I went to college at Tulane in New Orleans and recognized an air of defeat and resignation in the Black people in New Orleans. In time, I realized that for me, New Orleans was temporary and exciting, but for them, New Orleans was a trap that they could not escape. The city offered but a dismal education and few opportunities for its massive Black underclass, while distance from other cities effectively stranded them.
If they think the SBA was bad for minority health, it will pale in comparison to the harm of the ACA.
Live by the government, die by the government.
“no access to neighborhood supermarkets. For those without much money or options, fast food can be a blessing”
I wondered why they couldn’t make a nice, hot, nutritious, cheap meal of beans and cornbread, like I was raised on and still eat.
But apparently they only have “access” to the fast food joint. Whatever that means.
My late father’s “school lunch” on those rare days he was able to attend was a piece of cornbread with a bit of lard on top.
That must have been the standard, because it’s pretty much the way my dad described the lunch he carried to school. My grandfather had too many mouths to feed on a coal miner’s wage, but he managed to get most of them to adulthood.
I have been many places and seen many things but what I have never been witness to is a person forcibly shoving Big Mac’s down someone else’s gullet. That, L and G, is a individual sport activity and subject to free will as any other bad habit.
The CIA introduced crack into the black community and Ray Kroc introduced Big Mac to the same. It’s a flipping conspiracy...
“No one forces blacks to eat fast food. Since most are considered poor they should be cooking at home instead.”
Cheap tasty food is racist. Expensive food is racist. Self control is racist. Everything white people do or dont do to help blacks is racist.
We are the first society in the history of the planet whose poor people have to worry about obesity instead of starvation.
He is not a professor at NYU. He got a master’s degree from there in urban sociology. He was a research assistant. He’s working toward his doctorate. Apparently he’s having difficulty writing his dissertation. If this article is a representative sample of his work, he’s going to have trouble getting that dissertation written.
He speaks of the Super Dome and black bodies fleeing New Orleans when, in fact, that was the problem. Those bodies never fled. They stayed and didn’t evacuate when told of the threat.
And then there was the snarky comment about conservatives. This kid has much to learn.
And almost completely at the expense of non- coloured applicants and franchisee's who were better funded and qualified, and there were a lot of Hispanics who benefited as well from theses, simply stated, reverse discriminations which went totally against long established policies.
If you’re going to loot beer, at least get something good! Looter guy had a load of Heinekens.
