Around the country, night workers at Walmart stores are being told to come in five hours early ON Thanksgiving. After having work until 7am that morning, they must get whatever sleep they can and then reutrn to work at 5pm for a 12 hour shift. How much time does this leave for them to spend the holiday with their family?
Walmart wants to call their employees associates. No, they are just workers.
>>Walmart has great jobs and benefits!!! <<
It does.
I’m sorry but I’m not seeing your point.
Before I had an education, I worked retail. I had a great job that was suited to my ability.
If one has no education why would that person deserves a job the same as someone who does?
That’s communism.
Great point...
Everyone like China Mart, or you’ll be banned!
Ya got to love it!
Does she start her sentences with “Uuum” too?
Not if the GOP congress defund the NLRB or reduces their power....
Also there are the courts to decide ultimately what power the NRLB really have....
Dad was a foreman on the AC Expressway. If we got even a few flakes, a state troopers would be calling my dad into work.
One year he went in on Christmas Eve afternoon, and he didn't get home until 7PM the next evening. He called us and insisted that we open our gifts. We waited.
Thanks for the illogical
Regarding overtime; Federal Department of labor laws mandate the Federal minimum wage and overtime rules. Overtime for non-exempt hourly workers does not kick in until after working 40 hours within a single work week and there is no DOL mandated overtime for working more than 8 hours in a day or for working Saturdays, Sundays or holidays. Some states have higher minimum wages and more generous OT rules and whichever is higher and more generous is the one that has to be followed in that State. Some companies pay hour workers shift, weekend or holiday differentials but again, that is up to the employers policy and not required by law. Wal-Mart pays OT when workers work over 40 hours in a week, they have to. But many employers do the same thing regarding work schedulingb to keep workers from going into an OT situation. Wal-Mart is not unique in this.
Two years ago I worked at Target during the Christmas season. Target opened at 5:00AM on Black Friday and I worked an 8 hour shift and 8 hour shifts that Saturday and Sunday. Working that weekend was not optional. It was all hands on deck, everybody worked. I was however surprised and very pleased when I got my paycheck that I received an additional 25 cent per hour for working on Black Friday but that was at Targets sole discretion. The managers also provided breakfast, lunch and dinner food for all the workers working that weekend, not that I expected it but I thought it was a nice way to let us know we were appreciated. I worked my but off at Target but I have to say they were a good company to work for when I was there.
Last year I worked at We Be Toys. Again, working the Black Friday weekend was not optional. They opened at midnight on Black Friday and I worked an 8 hour shift and was back in a 3:00PM on Saturday afternoon till 10:00 PM and back on Sunday morning at 7:00AM till 3:30PM. I received no extra pay for working the holiday weekend. At the time I was working a fulltime job and many days during the holiday season, left my day job after working 8 hours and worked a 6 hour shift until midnight at the retail job, getting up the next morning to be back at work at 8:00AM at the fulltime job and back again at We Be Toys for my evening shift till midnight. I also worked Christmas Eve. I wasnt scheduled to work but traded with a co-worker who had young children. I was happy to do that for her and also for the extra money. The reason I worked the second job at the time was because I needed the money and I was happy to have the opportunity to earn it.
Years ago I worked in grocery retail. I worked all sorts of crazy shifts sometimes closing the store at 11:00PM as assistant manager on duty and returning at 5:00AM the next morning to open the store or working overnight shifts for stocking. And many more years before that I worked for a convenience store as a manager that was open 7-days a week, 365 days a year and I worked many Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Years days. I was salaried and typically worked 60 or more hours a week and never got OT. It came with the territory.
I rarely if ever got OT in any of those retail jobs because I rarely work more than 40 hours in a week.
I have an exempt salaried position now in PR and HR and I dont get any OT for working over 40 hours or for bringing work home with me during busy times like open enrollment season and fiscal and calendar year ends.
>There are lots of people who need the job.
That's what people who lived through the '29 Depression said they were told. We've come a long way. (cough)
First, I am happy about having a job.
And quit making life miserable for those around. /
Second, I have never complained to the people I work with. I have never said they were full of crap and spoken down to them as you have sone here. You seem to be an angry older person who feels the need to impose his opinions on others. You DO NOT have the right to tell someone else to go find another job no matter the circumstances (you do not know me). That is lack of tact and manners.
You also seem to be someone who has the need to have the alst word so go ahead and prove me right. You have your opinion of me and that is your right, but you aired it in public the same way you accused me of doing. So, I will let you have the final word. I wouldn’t want to be accused of being a complainer.
Actually, there are many places of business that are open on Saturday. Also, there ARE employers who are willing to work with you on this issue, especially if you are a valuable employee.
My overall consideration in the previous posts was the celebration of Thanksgiving...a national day of prayer. Perhaps I did not make that very clear.
My use of past history was that of an example of how we, as a nation, have lost something important. Our God became things.....instead of the Giver of all things.
Yes it is simple. When the management of retail stores put their profit ahead of American and Christian tradition, and ahead of their employees’ desire to be with family on Christmas and Thanksgiving, we as consumers need to let them know we don’t like it.
These are the same creeps who call Chrismas Trees “Holiday trees”. These are the same creeps who disrespect our Christian holidays but want to make a profit from them. It stinks.
It’s not like long-time WalMart employees knew when they signed on that they would have to work Thanksgiving. This is something brand new, thought up by pinhead MBAs to squeeze another dime out of the consumer by taking advantage of a Christian holiday. The employees are stuck but we consumers are not.
I will not support it. I hope all those who hold family values and American tradition dear will do the same.
Thread hijacking again are you? I thought this thread was about employees having to work over the holiday?
Clown, what other jobs? Maybe you have it made due to your own righteous efforts. Fantastic! Now how about the others who may not be a smart and brilliant as you? The economy and job markets sucks for them but you are too busy complaining about them making these very simple, truthful observations. About reality.
Guess what happens when the jobs market sucks. People start thinking that mo' Obama style Gov't will bail them out. You want everyone to be a kiss-butt serf for you? Fine, but the serfs and wage slaves and welfare addicts just might outvote you and vote in commie/socialist politicians and guess what they do, genius. They jack up your taxes...through the roof. Then you and me and all freepers lose
Uuum,nope.
If the job market sucks, quit bitching about your job and be happy you have one.
For a long time I was hog farmer, which is a 365 days a year job, so Thanksgiving meant getting up a couple hours early so I could join in the festivities. AFTER showering and cleaning up to get most of the hog smell off, something most people here have no idea about.
Christmas was the same, had to work Christmas. Same for New Years, 4th of July, Labor Day, whatever.
I have NO patience with people endlessly bitching about their jobs, those who do are fools, those who put up with it are enablers and shouldn't.
>>Three years later, there is not ONE employee I recognize from the night or day shifts still working. <<
Did you ever think it’s the management, not the corporation?
Cause let me tell you, at my Walmart, I NEVER see the faces change. They know me, I know them.
People are begging to work at ours.
Companies like Wal-mart use software that keeps track of hours, to minimize the chance somebody will get overtime pay, but still comply with the labour laws. So, unless it is an unusual situation, the chances of getting overtime pay is between slim and none.
As far as writing up employees for not clocking out at exactly the end of their shift and getting a few minutes overtime, I’m sure Wal-mart or somebody lost a big case to the labour board and it cost the company big bucks.
I worked in the West Knoxville store, and this is exactly how they did it there in 2000. Things may have changed since then, but I ended up walking away from it for greener pastures and never looked back.
