Around the country, night workers at Walmart stores are being told to come in five hours early ON Thanksgiving. After having work until 7am that morning, they must get whatever sleep they can and then reutrn to work at 5pm for a 12 hour shift. How much time does this leave for them to spend the holiday with their family?
Walmart wants to call their employees associates. No, they are just workers.
I know all about freedom. Its the freedom to say that Wall Mart sucks, their Thanksgiving policy sucks, they are a degenerate company, and I would not partonize them if I had a gun to my head. Thats my freedom. Why don't you like it people exercize their freedom?
The thing is, in retail holidays are when the most money is made- and yes it is necessary to have enough employees to sell the merchandise, that is how Walmart makes their money. So yes it is necessary. If the employees don’t think it is necessary they don’t have to work there.
Nope, didn’t want CPA after she finished,at the advice of her CPA uncle. (shrug)
She went into an entirely different field and did very well.
She was not discouraged because of the new job,she loves it,especially the work environment.
I worked there three years ago as a night stocker and got threatened with less hours if I continued to "abuse overtime" - I accumulated three minutes OT in 40 hours. When a holiday comes around, you get paid for the holiday, but then are given only 4 days work.
I did it for beer money, enjoyed giving the managers $h!t over their petty crap and bailed when they wouldn't give me time off to visit relatives. "We didn't hire you for your convenience." That was understood. I told them it was a two-way deal - W-M got an employee who was always on time and never missed a day in three years (highly unusual) . In return, there was a tacit agreement that allowed me to take off the summer months (that worked for two years - then we got a new manager).

I think it’s great they have plenty of paying work for the non-lazy. I’ll be sure to let them know.
>>I didnt know letting people know how employees are treated at walmart would cause such a hooplah.<<
Your perspective on how people are treated that is....
I dont like WalMart, because they sell cheap Chinese c**p.
However, you are not going to find much sympathy from Freepers who have spent much of their careers working over the holidays.
In the glorious 70s and early 80s- retail was able to avoid working over the holidays.
The times have changed- join the rest of us who work or have spouses that work on the holidays.
Many of us have been pointing out the truth.
You call it being attacked.
We don't want you unhappy, we want you in another job, better suited for you.
She’s since turned fifty.
She’d go in for an interview and a 25 year old would be behind the desk. She began to recognize “the look”.
But she persisted and got a decent job.

Which is exactly how one should react.
If one doesn’t like it, quit.
There are lots of people who need the job.
Good post. We have overbearing posters here (Narses, Balding Eagle) that think you are a serf who should never speak up here about WalMart being dysfunctional sometimes
If you speak up here-— Well that’s whining and complaining. Meanwhile Narses is complaining as fast as he can type to JimRob and the Admin Moderator. Pot, kettle, black. Nuff said
I do my part by not shopping at places or during times when I think people should not have to work. They can do their part by getting a different job.
Because they are TAKING money from Walmart, then turning around and bitching about it.
They have the right to do so, but as Walmart cutomers WE have the right to tell them to move on to something else, 'cuz we hate interacting with crabby employees.
Being an SDA, if Sunday became a mandatory day of rest, there would be a good chance I’d starve, because it would be difficult to find a job that would allow me to keep the Sabbath holy.
Good for her!!!!!!
I worked with an ex-Marine who grew up on a dairy farm in the '50s. Up at 4 a.m. EVERY DAY, except one. On his birthday, he was allowed to sleep until 6 a.m. I said he must have really enjoyed those two extra hours. He said, no, he had his parents wake him up at the regular time, then spent the next two hours saying to himself, "I DON'T have to get up, I DON'T have to get up."
When he was 17, he joined the Marines, and, My God, THEY LET YOU SLEEP UNTIL 5 a.m! "All you had to do was march around with a 9 pound rifle and they paid you $50 a month!. How long has this been going on?"
Then came Tarawa.
See 329.
LOL!
Really? Employees TAKE money from thier employers? Silly me, I thought the EARNED it
They have the right to do so, but as Walmart cutomers WE have the right to tell them to move on to something else, 'cuz we hate interacting with crabby employees.
And Wall-Mart customers also have a right to tell Wall Mart that their Thanksgiving policy sucks
