On Tuesday, Microsoft credited strong sales of Windows 7, as well as the introduction of Office 2010, for pushing its second quarter revenues to a record $16 billion -- a 22% jump over the same quarter in 2009. Windows revenue grew by more than $1 billion, to $4.55 billion, according to the company.
As it has several times in the past, yesterday Microsoft called Windows 7 "the fastest-selling operating system ever."
The OS has certainly outperformed its predecessor, Windows Vista.
According to data from Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based Net Applications, which tracks operating system usage share by monitoring 40,000 sites that use its Web metrics service, Windows 7 held a 14.4% share as of July 21, nine months after its release. Vista took 22 months to reach the same mark.
Klein's statement that Windows 7 now accounts for 15% of the in-use operating systems worldwide not only differed from Net Applications' numbers, but also from those of Irish analytics firm StatCounter, which pegs Windows 7's current global share at 17.6%. It was also muddied by a competing claim by Microsoft spokesman Brandon LeBlanc, who said that the new OS now powers 16% of all PCs.

If it's “satire” as you are now claiming, how come you threw a hissy fit when I wished on you the same thing you were invoking on those who wrote Windows a( hanging)?
“Youre too damn stupid”
I'd call you an imbecile. Only thing is, that would be an insult to imbeciles everywhere.
“How about you and me meet somewhere in DC and well have a discussion”
You can come to New York any time you want if you want a “discussion”.
Win 7 has sold a massive 175 million units. What is 1 million as compared to that?
In addition, I just gave you percentage figures from W3C themselves, showing that Win2K accounted for only a tiny 0.7 share before Win 7 was launched, and today still accounts for 0.4% share(a drop of only 0.3% in 9 months). Win 7 is a at masive 19.8% share already.
There is simply NO WAY, Win2K users are the reason Win 7 has registered such massive record sales in such a short time.
“Not sure why you won't concede that a percentage of the sale increase is due to other factors besides a worshiping love of Microsoft and Windows 7.”
Just accept the facts and face reality for a change. Win2K is a NOT FACTOR in Win 7 sales.
I have supplied you with facts and figures and links to back up my points. You have given is pure hot air and nothing else.
I find it impressive that XP is so loved that people still consider it the best OS. Pretty good for an old piece of software.
” we are in the midst of our XP->Win7 migration. “
Arg. I hate you. Around 150 nodes in my AD touch an application that can’t run on 7. I’m stuck until my vendor pulls their head out.
The thread is about a spike the last 29 days, not total sales. Computer sales are up, that’s a fact and Windows 7 comes with them. Millions of businesses were still on W2k and many of them are upgrading.
Windows 7 is ok but let’s face it, Vista sucked out of the box, it got a bad rep so people held off buying new boxes and now they are.
But you will never convince me that it does more than XP because it doesn’t. It’s just an OS that runs my programs, preferably my lottery ones because I love taking NYS for every dime I can on the Pick 3. :)
I’m not Steve Jobs, but I would guess he would say the iPad thing is working out fine for him. The last time I saw they were selling 1 every 3 seconds or so. And that was before it was available worldwide. Sure it isn’t the numbers of Windows 7, but then it is selling for a considerable premium compared to Windows 7 licenses.
> Arg. I hate you. Around 150 nodes in my AD touch an application that cant run on 7. Im stuck until my vendor pulls their head out.
Oh dear, sorry to hear that (about your AD).
Although our migration is going well overall, we're having our difficulties too, sorry to say. MS-Dynamics/GP client for our version refuses to run on Win7, -AND- doesn't run in the XP-Mode VM either. A couple of older software development tools have trouble in the Win7 environment.
I'm in the process of weaning our systems away from using our AD -- it's been nothing but a nightmare of application incompatibility. Of course, that's because 90% of our applications are non-Microsoft, many are open-source and run perfectly fine with a real LDAP, but not with MS-AD. *sigh*
We're sort of waiting on vendors too, but having to work around them in the meantime. Reason? Win7 is such a huge improvement over XP that we are freakin' thrilled to be migrating. I've been using it long enough now that switching back to an XP system feels like driving a 1960 Ford Falcon.
As you'll note from my FR profile, I'm pretty much agnostic about computers and OSes. So here I am posting a pro-Win7 comment from my MacBook... :)
I do the same myself as regards the classic menu, and in control panel as well. And don’t forget to change the View mode to Details, and not hide file types and system files. I can understand the latter default but why do we need big icons? And i like the up arrow in folders, which Vista removed.

Yeah?
Ummmm..Windows 7 sold even faster back in October and November.
” Computer sales are up, thats a fact and Windows 7 comes with them’
Yes. But Windows 7 itself sold faster in Oct/Nov than it did in the last 29 days.
“Millions of businesses were still on W2k and many of them are upgrading.”
Pecentage-wise, Win2K upgrades are an insignificant amount of Win 7 sales, and I have posted the figures to back that up (with links). You simply haven't.
“Windows 7 is ok but lets face it,”
Win 7 is a not just ok, it's a great OS.
“But you will never convince me that it does more than XP because it doesnt’
Win 7 is superior to XP in any way you care to mention.
Convince you? Why would I want to convince an Applebot fanatic about how great Win 7 is? Win 7 is vastly outselling every single operating system Apple has ever launched with plenty of room to spare, despite the best efforts of the Applebots to spread as much FUD as they can. And Win 7 market share has already overtaken the market share of the entire Apple mac install base in just a few short months.
Oh....and I’m assuming you checked the website of the manufacturer of your computer AND the manufacturer of the graphics adapter. I just mention it in case you didn’t.
Gentlemen, please enjoy your fistfight without involving me. Thanks.
My point was that there is a far higher percentage of dissatisfaction with IPads than there is with any other hand-held device. Many consumer complaints. There is no such problem with Windows7, though I’ll bet there was with Vista.
Steve Jobs will live and, eventually die, with Gates-envy. He’s never been able to hold a candle to him because he’s always offered an inferior product. It just bugs me that Apple users are almost cult-like in their assertions that Macs are sooooo much better than PCs.
So Win7 is 20% to XP's 55%. Cool, won't be too long before it passes XP... what's a good prediction? Mid-2011?
No profanity, please.
The huge shortcut arrow, what’s up with that? Had to change that back to the small one. I think the slider for folder size is actually pretty cool but even with ShellFolderFix they still have to be done individually instead of having a default size. The Microsoft MP4 codecs are horrible, don’t even know how those got out the door but fortunately there’s FFDShow. Without third party applications almost any Windows OS would be barely usable let alone tolerable.
I think Vista was just a tool to spur 7 sales.
No one even has to bother to hang you, POS!
All anyone has to do, is hand you a rope. You will take care of the rest yourself. You won't be the first vermin to hang himself.
