And Now, What's your Scotch?

Posted on 10/21/2009 6:34:53 PM PDT by Sax

I'm not saying this is the way it should go, but for me, it went bourbon as a young man, irish whisky as the taste developed, and then nestled into the scotch as the palate matured and settled down to a sipping type restraint.

Glenmorangie as the everyday benchmark, Laiphroaig for the smoky flavor, and Lagavulin for the best of that.

Aye Lad. “Old Pulteney” from Wick. One of the better Highland Whiskies. But better yet, and I think the best of all is “Highland Park” from Kirkwall in the Orkneys.
It’s my special Wee Dram for special occasions.

I drink a mixture of white lightning with a little cat pee. Tastes just like scotch. Yeeech!

Not a big liquor drinker at all but I’ve tried lots over the years :)

For scotch I like JW Black Label and Chivas, over ice or neat. Famous Grouse is pretty good too.

In the singles I like Glenlivet and Highland Park. I tried Laphroaig once when it was on sale and thought it must be what paint stripper tastes like (ducking).

Just make sure your ‘shine is cooled through a 1968 Ford radiator for an extra kick :-)

I don’t know what the hell it is with a cat’s digestive system. I can feed the dogs and the cat the same thing and the cat’s business winds up being like some Alien blood ammonia based acid stuff.

I heard someone describing it as what a campfire tastes like when filter through a snow encrusted mitten. It certainly has a STRONG flavor.

Something to be said about Balvanie Double Wood as well.

I can't believe I agree with a Gator fan, but that's my current favorite.

Lagavulin.

What’s more, my wife, who had been of the opinion that she did not like Scotch, likes it, too!

Ok! Here’s one that blew me away. Made friends with the husband of a wife’s co-worker. He’s in the blue collar trades, fresh from Scotland. Said they drank Laiphroaig mixed in with whole milk. I was definitely skeptical, until I tried it. Surprisingly, it was pretty good. Not something I’d call a regular drink, but really surprising.

There’s a lot us SEC boys can agree on, such as Ohio St. sucks, the Sooners are overrated and Southern Girls are the best.

I’ve gotten sadly agreeable in my middle age.

If you like Nadurra (which is excellent), perhaps you will like this even more:

Laphroaig and Lagavulin are both quite excellent.

Lagavulin, without a doubt is my favorite. But reserved for special occasions. For an amazing and far less expensive drink, try “The Smokey Peaty One,” from Jon, Mark & Robbo’s Easy Drinking Whisky Co. Sounds like a joke, but it is everything the names imply.
