Toddler Dies After Hooters Mom Forgets Child in Hot Car

PHOENIX — The mother of a 17-month-old boy found dead after he was left unattended inside a hot car for at least seven hours in a north Phoenix Hooters restaurant was arrested on one felony count of negligent homicide.

Police say the woman, Ashly Duchene, 22, left her son in her car when she arrived at the north Phoenix Hooters restaurant where she works at about 10 a.m. Tuesday. When she returned to the car after her shift at nearly 5 p.m., her son was dead.

Efforts to revive the boy by witnesses, officers and firefighters were unsuccessful. Police Sgt. Joel Tranter said temperatures hit nearly 90 degrees Tuesday, but that it would have been more than 100 degrees inside the car.

FOX 10 Phoenix reports the baby's mother had planned to drop the child off at childcare before heading to work at a restaurant near Bell Road and Interstate 17.

Instead, authorities say the mother went to work with the child still inside the car.

The baby was in a car seat in the backseat of a Honda Civic, which had very dark tinted windows. Officials believe that made him unnoticable to people going in and out of the restaurant and a car wash next door, the Republic reported.

It's unknown if the mother will face any charges in the child's death. Tranter said situations like this are handled "on a case-by-case basis."

So far, there have been no arrests.

i know. i was stunned when i heard John ask the question. the cop didn’t mention it at first that she had been heard to say stuff lately that cast doubt on her story that she forgot. i can’t even imagine being such a monster.

I’m sorry to hear that ... but truly the people at Hooters aren’t what she needs in her life. I believe she is better than that.

Take care.

Oh please, the only one responsible for this is the so-called mother.

thanx for your concern, and not to seem snippy, but you really do not know my daughter, therefore I can only speculate on how YOU FEEL that she is “better than that”.

Before being so quick to judge...walk a mile in her shoes. She really is an amazing young woman and equally amazing mother.

It's not that much different from a drowning death, which always involves some level of guilty parenting. You turn your back at a pool party, your child drowns in the host's pool, and the headline reads, "Parents party while child drowns."

I can afford some pity. I notice no father was mentioned in the story--

Actually I had a close call like this--drove into the garage with my sleeping infant, decided I'd go put the icecream away before I woke the baby up. Once in the kitchen, I got distracted with what I was going to make for dinner. Ten minutes later, I heard the outraged howling from the garage.

Unnerving. There is nothing so distracting as taking care of children, and nothing so fatal to children as distractibility.

There are mornings I am so tired from taking care of a sick kid that Im in a haze until about 11.. Right now Im more stuck with pity for the mother than anger...

Ive never forgotten to drop off my kid at day care but I can imagine how it could happen..

Just out of curiosity why does it “seem evident this unintentional”?

I see that the Phelps Church seems to have a contingent on Free Republic. But since these people are not about to start paying your daughter’s bills, I say tell them to go polish their chastity belts and be proud that you have raised a bright, responsible daughter. Congratulations.

I don’t buy the “I forgot” excuse. We know too well that woman do kill their children. I believe this is just a try to make it look like an accident to avoid 1st degree murder charges.

“How sad” that you are being a jerk. There are numerous reasons why she took the job. Flexible hours, the only thing available at the time, close proximity to the hospital, etc. Get a grip!

My daughter won’t be working in a dive like than.

Even more importantly she wouldn’t want to.

And what does this prove? Anybody can be “charged” with anything. Shouldn’t you be out waving a sign at a soldier’s funeral?

We’re not saying this was a deliberate act yesterday, but that does give insight to her mindset that caring for her child was not her top priority,” Phoenix Police Sgt. Joel Tranter told KTAR.

Tranter said family members told detectives that Duchene had made statements that she did not want to care for the child and wanted her freedom.
