Ok. I need to chime in! I got Mickey Mantle, Billy Martin, and Yogi Berra's autographs the same afternoon at spring training one year. :-) Also, saw the Beatles in Indianapolis in 1964. (I sat on my mommy's lap. (lie)) :-)

Did anyone see the spoof of Melinda that Joel McHale did on "The Soup" this past weekend? "The Melinda Doolittle School of Humility" -- how to treat every compliment as if it were the first time you've ever heard it! You'll learn "The Shrug" ...and so forth. Hilarious!

That scorching blues number ("W-O-M-A-N") she belted out a couple weeks ago and tonight's tune could not be more different. The only commonality from week to week is the excellence she brings to each performance. Melinda's a pro among amateurs. But whether that translates into becoming the American Idol is another matter entirely. .....considering the (lack of) musical sophistication of much of the voting audience.
Haley - meh. She sang a 60's pop hit called "Tell Him (I know something about love)." Not a horrible voice, but she's just not good enough. She has no real ear for the music, the band, and the background singers. No real understanding of how to perform, substituting tartiness for stagecraft. She started out using the more staccato style LuLu taught her, but then lost it about midway through the song. Granted, she's nice eye candy for straight guys, but that's about it. Only Sanjaya saves her from being the worst of the night.Chris R. - ROFLMBO! at Noone, who said "he didn't hear Chris' voice" because he's always doing breathy stuff. I guess I give Chris an 'A' for effort tonight, but his vocals are just not good. "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying" was a good song choice for him. But sorry judges, this guy is not good enough. He sings through his nose -- keeps reminding me of Ace, except not as effeminate as Ace. There's also nothing unique about this guy, although he's eye candy for straight females. He's cute with a good, masculine vibe.
Stephanie - Pretty girl. Sang a big 60's hit, "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me." Problem is, this girl is bland and boring. Just no there, there.
Blake - a true dark horse to win this competition, this guy is the real deal. He is quite possibly the most authentically musical of this year's group, plus he's the only genuine contemporary pop male talent AI has found so far in its six seasons. He sang "Time of the Season" with such an interesting, unique take, that I watched it over about four times. His voice isn't huge, but he has a real sense of the music, an impeccable sense of musical timing and phrasing. I like him.
LaKisha - a genuine disappointment tonight. LuLu gave her great advice. Sing "You're My World" instead of "Diamonds Are Forever." But LaKisha wanted to sing "Diamonds" because Shirley Bassey did it. Well, LaKisha, honey, you're good, but you're no Shirley Bassey. Besides, "Diamonds" was a theme to the James Bond film of the same name. The song was not written as a pop single, and it doesn't stand up on its own. LaKisha totally missed the meaning of the song. It's supposed to be sung with a touch of mystery and smoky danger. It's not a Vegas lounge act kind of song. LaKisha, honey, you're not a sexy woman and trying to sex up that song simply didn't work.
Phil - channeling Chris Daughtry while singing "Tobacco Road." Not good enough. I've said it before...he's got a potentially good voice with excellent range, but somewhere along the line he's picked up bad vocal and performing habits. If he had been guided from a young age by a top-notch vocal coach, he might be a genuine talent today. But he seems to have missed that boat.
Jordin - this girl is amazing. I really like her. She's got a big, still raw talent that could take her very far with the right management. Singing the wonderful bluesy song, "I Who Have Nothing," Jordin gave a stunning performance. Clean, simple, beautiful. She intuitively gets what the mentors have been trying to get through to some of the harder heads in this competition -- go with the melody. Her big voice got away from her just a bit toward the end, when she lost her breath some. But she'll learn to control that with more experience. Right now, her inexperience, plus being in the same group with a pro like Melinda, works against her winning the competition. But this girl has a very bright future ahead of her.
Sanjaya - please...they can't be serious letting this guy go out there week after week. Tonight's screech fest of " You Really Got Me Now" was just horrible. THE worst performance ever for a top 12 contestant. There are bunches of AI losers the five previous years who are way better than this guy. "You Really Got Me Now" is hardly a challenging song to sing. Its lyric is repetitive, it's melody and beat are simple fare. Yet he absolutely BOTCHED it royally. Bad, bad, bad, bad, BAAAD. Ugh! I can't think of a way to say it strongly enough while still keeping my language clean.
Gina - Singing "Painted Black," I want to like her. Seems like a sweet girl, but vocally she just doesn't quite have it. She tries hard and gives her all every week, and she definitely deserves to make it into the top 10. But she just isn't good enough.
Chris S. - Singing "She's Not There," the theatrics of coming out of the audience didn't work for him. He got out of breath when he ran up the stairs and never caught back up to the song. He's musical and has a good voice, but he plays it very safe every week. He does essentially the same type of song each week. As a result, he's become boring to me.
Melinda - Singing "As Long As He Needs Me" from the musical Oliver, an adaptation of the Dickens' classic "Oliver Twist." The character Nancy sings this song about her lover, the evil villain, Bill Sykes. I don't know if it's a torch song so much as it is a song both of defiance and an abused woman's heartbreak. Nancy is saying through the song that, even though Bill is a rotten guy, she loves him and won't betray him to the cops. But he thinks she does, and he kills her for it.
Melinda did her usual professional job singing the song, but completely missed its meaning. She sang it as a standard love song, which it really isn't. As a consequence, I didn't think this was Melinda's best performance. In addition, as other people have noted, her wide-eyed "who me" persona is wearing thin. She cannily said during the set-up piece that doing this song took her out of her comfort zone. That's not true -- or it may be true only in the sense that it's not a standard, but a dramatic number from a dark musical. Otherwise it's exactly the same type of song she's performed every week. I would like to see her break out of that mold and try something more young and contemporary.
At this point, the top four are separating themselves from the rest. Melinda, Blake, Jordin and LaKisha is how I place them, and the rest nowhere. To me, LaKisha is starting to fade, the bloom is coming off the Melinda rose, while Blake and Jordin are becoming my favorites.
LOL- no. Haven't seen it since college. It's still on, then? Melinda is a sweetheart - I want very much for her to stand up and be more confident.
That was not set up. My daughter was 10 last year when I took her to the Idol concert when it came to town. We were trying to meet the idols after, which wasn't going well, so I stepped into the rest room before we left. My daughter comes running in sobbing! I thought something happened to my step daughter and asked her what happened. "We met Mandisa's parents!" (Mandisa was my daughter's favorite idol last year) Just meeting the parents sent her into tears. It is a very emotionally charged thing when you come into contact with celebrities.
You mean you don't know who "David Cassidy" is?
C'mon you two! When the Partridge Family wasn't taping he really did concerts and tried to be a rock star, but his association with the show ruined it for him. They just didn't see him as a rock star.
Haley -- Mark her down as the surprise of the week. After last week's near-painful performance, she starts the show well looking confident and sounding pretty good
Chris R. -- I still don't like him. At all. But this was slightly less painful than previous weeks. However, Gloria Estefan's cover of this song about ten years ago was more masculine than Chris was.
Stephanie -- I thought this was not very good from Stephanie... she "surrounded" the pitch more than nailed it, and is doing herself no favors in the "forgettable" performance department.
Blake -- As I've said before, Blake is going to go out there and do his thing every week. This time, it worked, as he kept the melody pretty much intact while still modernizing it and making it his own. I think of Blake as a beat-boxing Sting.
Lakisha -- On the plus side, I thought this sounded just like it came from the original era; on the minus side, it sounded just like it came from the original era. Diction was much better this week, but she did have a little trouble in the bridge.
Phil -- He still bugs me, and I find his performances pretty easy to forget.
Jordin -- Ladies and gentlemen, THIS is how you do a "standing mic" performance. Solid vocally, and packed full of emotion. I'm moving her up from "dark horse" to frontrunner to win the competition.
Sanjaya -- By far and away the best we've seen from him. Still the worst of the night, however.
Gina -- I thought she did a very good job, so I was surprised to hear the judges say it was only OK. She needs to stay in the competition just to provide relief from the "diva" group.
Sligh -- His voice sounded a bit "thin" to me, and I get zero emotional response out of this performance. I know he can do better than that.
Melinda -- Personally, I object to her choice of song for the theme -- it's "British Invasion", not musical theater. I also thought she went way, way overboard with the vibrato. Hands-down the worst outing I've seen from her, and the deer-in-the-headlights act is starting to wear thin.
Who should go: Sanjaya (duh) Who will go: Stephanie
Song selection certainly helps... and the guest coaches are much, much better.
It's also their second time out on the big stage... maybe the nerves are less.
I wish we could see suckgaya go, but think he will survive again. He has more lives than a cat. I was disappointed with the song choices for both Melinda and Lakisha.
I thought at first it was just stinkgaya which was really irritating. But she was sniveling about everything. Maybe it was hormonal. But just--sheesh.
Many of us are not getting our wish. Stinkgaya survives another round. Phil's performance was brutal. Probably him.

"Hi Dave" - Will This Be Sligh's Doom?

While Chris Sligh was chatting with Ryan Seacrest after his performance tonight, he uttered the words "Hi Dave!" and then chanted "Fro Patrol, Fro Patrol!" Forget about his chanting, but take note of his "Hi Dave!"
Who is Dave? Is Dave the head of the Fro Patrol, a nickname for Chris Sligh's fan base, the name Fro Patrol being a play on words from the "Soul Patrol" days of Taylor Hicks? It could be, but more than likely not.
So who is this "Dave" fellow? He is none other than the Dave who runs that "horrible website," Vote For The Worst. Please note that Simon Cowell wanted to explain something to Ryan after the show. Mr. Cowell is well informed as are the producers of American Idol, but apparently Ryan was a bit slow on the take. The producers hate Vote For The Worst, and have even had their legal counsel send cease and desist orders to that website in the past.
Chris Sligh, for whatever people might think of him and his singing and performances, has a courage that surpasses any contestant so far appearing on American Idol - he dared to give acknowledgement of that horrible website and its notorious webmaster, "Dave."
A person at Vote For The Worst challenged Chris Sligh to say those two little words, "Hi Dave." Sligh did so, and they are having a field day on that horrible website right now. It is considered a major VFTW victory. Of course, I know this only from hearsay since I would never, ever, view that horrible website... and I never, ever say anything sarcastic either.
Oh my, what will happen to Sligh? Will those deadly words, "Hi Dave!" be edited out of the West coast broadcast of AI tonight? Only time will tell, but who will ring for Sligh the bell. I will keep you posted as more revelations become known to me... from my "hearsay" sources... of course.
Ain't that the truth? Like Jason from Friday the 13th. The road will end eventually. Just not soon enough.
Another performance or two like Lakisha had last night & she's going to bottom 3.
I read at another site that the girl that was crying has cancer. I'm looking around, trying to confirm.
And therein lies her problem, doesn't it?
