It is right for Simon to say, "wow, you're commercial with a capital C" and then the girl naturally thinks she's IT and then she doesn't make it to the finals? (I need to go to bed, I have jury duty in the morning--ugh!)

Do you think when they are that young that they should maybe do more things like mall concerts and build up more of a following before cutting a cd? I just hate to see her get a bums rush because they pushed her too soon.I think the people guiding her career need to be patient. Unlike the golden days of Hollywood musicals, there are few places for youngsters like that to get the professional mentoring and showcasing they need. If I could advise the girl and her parents, I'd say let her be an ordinary schoolgirl for at least four more years, until she reaches 16. Let her do school productions; maybe do local theater if a musical is playing that calls for a young girl vocalist. Keep an eye on upcoming Broadway productions that might have young girl roles, and try out for them. Mall concerts are also a good training ground.
All of that would be excellent preparation for the kid to learn the ropes, learn who she is musically, and simply mature.
Either that, or if the kid can act, maybe she could try out for non-singing roles on TV and other productions that need children. That would give her the exposure and connections she needs to try for a singing career a few years from now.

The bad thing is that we haven't seen/heard some of these people and they don't get much time in these early rounds.

No more single mothers as a possible American Idol! At the very least, they shouldn't be able to ever mention their children. It's manipulative. Like tonight, when Lakisha thought she was going to get cut, she said, "I'll go home to my son". When that didn't get a reaction, she added: "He's going to be four."

Simon: "You're probably the most popular, but not one of the better singers." Shut up, Simon. He's IN!!Simon's on crack. He's the best singer of the bunch. His clip they showed gave me shivers. (Plus his "You're probably all wondering why I called this meeting" killed me.
Beyond that, the show SUCKED, and the line-up pretty much sucks. That Marisa (?) girl should have beat about 10 of the other chicks that made it.
