A good phrase, even though Leonidas's army was killed or captured by the Persians.

Yes they died heroically, but in so doing they were delaying the Persians so that the Greeks had time to get their act together and crush the Persians...at the Battle of Plateia---saving the West.

Only in a literal sense---Not sure who took over who...The Greek patrimony lives on until today but certainly in imperial form to the fall of Constantinople (Eastern Roman Empire)in 1453 AD.
