TUESDAY, Oct. 17 (HealthDay News) -- A new study finds that at least 1 in every 4 smokers will develop progressive and incurable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a much higher risk than previously believed.
COPD is a respiratory disease that results in blocked air flow to the lungs and grows progressively worse.
For this study, published online in the journal Thorax, researchers at Hvidovre Hospital analyzed data on 8,000 men and women, ages 30 to 60. All were monitored for 25 years as part of the Copenhagen City Heart Study.
At the start of the study, all the participants' lungs were healthy and working normally. However, over the course of the 25 years, the lungs of almost all the male non-smokers continued to function normally, compared to 60 percent of men who continued to smoke.
Among women, 90 percent of non-smokers still had healthy lungs at the end of 25 years, compared to 70 percent of smokers.
Overall, 25 percent of the participants developed moderate or severe COPD over the 25 years. Persistent smokers were six times more likely to develop COPD than non-smokers.
During the 25 years, there were 2,900 deaths in the study group. Of those deaths, 109 were directly attributable to COPD, and nearly all those deaths were in people who were active smokers at the start of the study. Only two non-smokers died of COPD.
The study also found a sharp decline in the risk of COPD among people who stopped smoking soon after the start of the study. Over the 25 years, none of these ex-smokers developed severe COPD.
You rock!!
Reread the article.
Great idea, along with "anyone born after 1960 should not be eligible for any medical subsistance (sic) related to eating if they are fat if they CHOOSE to kill themselves after all the publicity about overeating has gotten over the years."
And, "anyone born after 1960 should not be eligible for any medical subsistance (sic) related to heart conditions or diabetes if they CHOOSE to kill themselves after all the publicity on lack of exercise, being overweight and eating properly has gotten over the years."
This list could go on and on. Give people in all health categories a break--we are all going to die, it is a matter of picking your poison.
Not to worry, designer babies are on the horizon and diseases will be selected out. A real conservative mind-set.
I would suggest to you that there are many forms of COPD....and that your MIL more than likely had an infection/pneumonia...that caused excess secretions..and/or she had an inability to clear her own secretions.
Unfortunately I have treated many end-stage COPD'ers...and it can actually be a fairly "easy" way to go. The pt. often enough just can not ventilate effectively and their CO2 level climbs until they are basically unaware of what is happening....They just "go to sleep".
So, in my experience...it's not exactly as you have described.
FWIW-
Got data?
Smooth!!
You should try one....!!
You win!!
About the most moronic post I've read in months............
I can only hope this was the case for my father. He told my mother it was ok to go home. She had been at the house maybe 10 minutes after a 5 minute drive there, when the hospital called. I think he knew.
You would be surprised how often a loved one is told to go......and the pt. passes away after they have left.
Happens a lot.....
Yup.
Nah, the Nanny's would moan and groan about the choices these unworthy people made to cross the street so many times claiming they are not worthy of care because of their choice. Then they would lobby to get laws past telling you where to cross the street and how many times.
I thought FR was a conservative web-site.
i don't say smoking is good for you, i just don't think it's as bas as they say it is.
p.s. i smoked Lucky's for over ten years before i quit.
I say: Anyone with that type attitude needs to refund all the excess taxes smokers have paid....and until they do they need to kep their mouths SHUT.
Oh, and BTW - if nicotine is your problem, I suggest you stay aways from tomatoes and peppers and eggplant and the rest of the fruits and veggies that are members of the nightshade family.
"Which means that 75% NEVER HAVE A PROBLEM, so why not report it that way?!"
I enjoy partaking in natures gifts of tobacco & beer, not bombs you stupid fool! Also, i don't do stuff like smoking to be cool. You must, though, to try to make up for some shortcoming, based on your weak logic.
I totally agree with you, and generally I do - but there are just times when I get totally fed up with the bovine excrement they continuously put out, that the DBM sucks up and regurgitates and the sheeple accept as gospel.
What kind of data? Conclusively linking lung cancer to smoking? You tell me what you want, I'll get it for you.
