Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting
NICKEL MINES, Pa. At least two female students and one slightly older female who may have been a teacher's aide were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.
State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.
"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.
Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.
"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.
After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims some critically wounded were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.
defconw, I feel very good about keeping my guns and I feel very bad about those precious little girls getting raped and murdered by a madman. It makes me sick to know that any child has to go through the evil that adults do to them. That said, it was NOT the guns that killed them, but rather it was a madman. Responsible gun owners don't do this kind of thing. IF people are determined to kill, and they don't have access to guns, they will do it with explosives, swords, knives, baseball bat, etc., because THEY want to kill. The weapons they use is NOT the problem!
Even if "every" gun in America were banned and given up by law abiding citizens, criminals would never give up their guns. That's because they're criminals and that's what criminals do. They break the law. The only difference is that if a man came to my house to rob and rape me, I would have NO way to defend myself. It's only a matter of time before terrorists are going to start attacking Americans again, and we have to have a way to protect ourselves and our loved ones, or in another "Katrina" fiasco, Americans have the right to defend ourselves. You saw how the government was unable to protect the citizens in New Orleans.
IMO, there is another answer to these school shootings. Locks! As soon as the bell rings, the administration needs to lock all outside doors. As soon as each class period changes, those rooms need to be locked during school too. THAT will keep any nut case from entering the school like the last two killers did. It may not be the perfect answer, but it would be a lot less expensive and a way to make kids much more secure, and they could do that right NOW! It would also give school security a better chance to spot someone or something that signals danger. They would be in the halls during class change to make sure kids are safe then too.
He wasn't having dreams, HE was dreaming (thinking) of doing it again.
you bet he was. that is why he brought what he did. i hope he is enjoying the heat where he is.
The perp says he molested family members, apparently 20 years ago. No one so far has come out to verify that they were molested. I believe that a toddler could forget being molested, so it is possible that no one will be able to verify this. That being said it is an excellent idea to check his computer if he had one.
Sadly, I was most likely right that he is a child molester and this was what he had planned for those girls.
Excellent post!
I believe so, but I'll check into that just to be certain.
More details are there than can be quickly typed by me.
LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - As the Amish prepare for the funerals of five girls slain in Mondays school attack in Bart Township, their English neighbors are reaching out to embrace the victims families.
At least four funds have been established to help pay medical costs connected to Mondays shootings.
Working through Herman Bontrager, secretary/treasurer of the National Committee for Amish Religious Freedom, a fund has been established at the Strasburg office of HomeTowne Heritage bank, a division of National Penn Bank.
The Amish are willing to accept gifts to be used to help pay medical costs, both immediate and long term, Bontrager said.
He said the Amish are very humble, and they want it to be made very clear are not promoting this, but they are willing to accept help.
Donations may be sent to Nickel Mines School Victims Fund, HomeTowne Heritage Bank, 100 Historic Drive, P.O. Box 337, Strasburg, PA 17579, or at any division of National Penn Bank.
Bontrager said another fund is being set up through the Mennonite Central Committee and Mennonite Disaster Services. According to MCCs Web site, contributions may be sent to the MCC U.S., 21 S. 12th St., P.O. Box 500, Akron, PA, 17501-0500.
Donations may also be made by phone by calling 859-1151 or 1-888-563-4676 or on-line at www.mds.mennonite.net.
Two more funds have been established through Coatesville Savings Bank. Contributions to either the Nickel Mines Childrens Funds or the Roberts Family Fund may be sent to the Coatesville Savings Bank, 1082 Georgetown Road, Paradise, PA 17562.
The Roberts Family Fund was set up to benefit the family of the gunman in the tragedy, who had a wife and three children under age 8.
I agree with you that it's a bunch of bad things that cause rage in people that do school shootings. But I think you are still not seeing the damage that is done to a childs soul to teach them a false theory that goes against commonsense. Kids may not express it and the anger may come out at other things. I know that the way evolution was taught to me created a doubt about God and the Bible and that just made it easier for bad things to happen in my life. I wasn't unique in that way I am sure.
bttt
Thank you very much Thumper.
I was there a little bit ago and they have an incredible wealth of information today.
Still praying for all involved and your whole community...
Very well put, anyone who cannot see the need to carry in this day and age is to blind to see.
"Irresponsible" from whose point of view?
If they really worship at the altar of utter non-violence and pacifism, then, from their point of view, it ought to be immoral to appeal to a violent authority [such as a police department] to protect them from someone who wishes to visit violence upon them [and upon their loved ones].
I just don't get the Amish reasoning here [and, quite frankly, it seems to me that there is no reasoning - the Amish position, if I understand it correctly, seems to be internally inconsistent].
Have you guys heard the latest? I just heard on Fox News that "Reverand" Phelps and his evil doers are going to the Amish funerals to protest! Can you believe it??? These people haven't been victimized enough, and that monster has to bother them???? Unreal!
"But I think you are still not seeing the damage that is done to a childs soul to teach them a false theory that goes against commonsense. I think you are taking a personal experience and projecting onto others.
I too was taught the theory of evolution as were my friends.
I never once doubted God and the Bible because I figured that God could create life anyway He wanted to.
The bible doesn't even have the sun and the moon appearing until the 4th day. Yet - on the 3rd day He creates the vegetation.
We don't know how long these "days" are in the bible, and we do see a progression in Genesis from 1. elements necessary to support life being established 2.vegetation 3. establishing the sun & moon 4.animal life 5.human life.
So....I am open to either interpretation - that God could have instantly created these things - or that He could have gradually created these things.
I don't agree with what I was taught that it was due to random mutations - but then again, I don't agree with other things I was taught.
I'm not trying to turn this into a creation vs evolution discussion - there's plenty of those...I'm just showing that introducing the concept in a classroom doesn't necessarily create anger in someone.
You obviously think there is a connection - but I think there are other factors that would send a person into this kind of action.
Now we are learning this particular shooter had molested kids before and he was planning on molesting these girls.
This too has nothing to do with creation vs. evolution in the classroom.
I have no problem with people having guns if they choose to. I only said I don't KNOW anyone around here who carry them except for hunting. Got a problem with that? You're speaking words I never said.
Just because nobody you know carries a gun on a daily basis and btw, how do you know? If it's concealed and the person makes no mention of being the holder of a concealed weapons permit...you might not know if your best friend carried or not. Anyway, your tone and verbiage suggests guns are for hunting. You seem to be seeing the situation from the point of view of someone who is isolated from the gritty reality of city crime and even from the hovering threat presented by terrorism.
If you've never experienced being threatened at gunpoint, you have no business telling others what they should do when faced with the situation.
It's like a childless person telling you how to handle your children.
