The Vanishing of Natalee Holloway... Satish, Joran, Deepak, and Freddy

It has been quite a while since I wrote a new entry about the Natalee Holloway case, however I felt I had good reason -- my observations of the news cycle told me that the story was dead in the water for a bit. There was plenty of publicity for it, in both blogs and the mainstream media, so I felt comfortable in my pursuing other stories as they broke.

Today, finally, a new development in the case of the Mountain Brook, Alabama teen now missing for nearly 4 months from the island of Aruba that I, personally, consider highly significant.

This morning it was announced that not only had Satish and Deepak Kalpoe, the Surinamese brothers originally arrested along with Joran van der Sloot, been re-arrested, but also their buddy, Freddy (source: GadsdenTimes.com/AP).

I was able to re-acquire the .jpeg on the right from an anonymous source, whom I can't thank enough. It is the original photo, and the guy on the far right is none other than Freddy. All news media uses of the photo have been identical to mine, Freddy duly cropped off the picture, but now it seems it is probably a good idea to tack old Freddy back on.

So I found something nearly as good, because I recalled clearly what Freddy looked like. I have obviously cropped this photo to remove images of people unlikely to be related to this case, but the diminutive gent on the left is "Freddy."

At the moment it is not even known if the new arrests of the Kalpoe brothers and Freddy have anything to do with the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, but it doesn't seem much of a stretch to think they must. MSNBC has caught one of the Kalpoes heading into the now-infamous Carlos 'n Charlie's bar where Natalee was last seen at the end of May of this year, a striking instance perhaps of the brother in question "not getting it."

Though this is probably an important development in this now most-famous of missing persons cases, at the moment I am sure my faith in the ability of the Aruban authorities to figure all of this out is just as weak as any other American following the investigation.

Here are a few of the so-called developments in the Holloway investigation that I skipped writing about:

* The arm that washed up on the beach in Venezuela... maybe a serious development, at the moment, it doesn't seem so.
* All of the various search parties in pissing matches as to whose highly-trained search pooch has the most expert nose for sussing out dead folks. I realize that these folks truly intend to help the Holloway-Twitty family, but the moment they started dissing each other in the news I vowed to not give them a word of coverage on this blog -- I happened to be waiting for my segment on Fox's The Big Story Weekend (the new photo of me on the right side of this blog's main page was taken by my Mom as she watched me in that appearance), when I heard one of the first salvos in that petty battle over the IFB (earpiece that guests wear that allows us to hear the show and studio audio), launched by the Florida-based team that came to Aruba after Texas EquuSearch.
* A development that may need covering, but I held off; new charges that may be filed against Joran van der Sloot for rape by at least one of three young women on Aruba who either dated or had encounters with him. In Joran's Young Ex I already chronicled the fact that the then-17-year-old van der Sloot had for a time last year a girlfriend who wasn't any older than 14, and the fact that if they slept together it might be considered statutory rape in Aruba... at the time I felt that if she were willing to come forward that might be reason enough to hold van der Sloot if the grounds for charging him in the Holloway case were too weak.

Like I said, that's a very short list -- mainstream media outlets have covered this case in exhaustive detail, to almost comic results at times, but that's their job -- the joy of blogging -- joy being not a very good word for crimeblogging, but oh, well -- is in being a 'free agent' as to what the blogger chooses to write about.

Yet, when I've already written so much about the vanishing of Natalee Holloway in the Aruban night, I couldn't ignore this particular development, and what it might mean.

My theory on what happened? I get asked this question a lot since I appeared on TV, even though my TV spots have all been about the Groene murders and alleged serial killer Joseph Edward Duncan III. If you have read any of my blog entries written at the beginning of the Holloway case you might have figured out my theory -- that Joran van der Sloot beguiled Natalee, both personally and perhaps with chemical assistance. He took her to the beach, with the Kalpoe brothers' assistance. "Something bad" happened there, between the 6'5" athlete Joran and the petite Natalee. Something likely accidental on its face, at least. Joran panicked, and sought help as to what to do with Natalee's dead body. He received it from the Kalpoes, his father, Paul, and perhaps even someone like Freddy, who could be found in numerous photos originally available online with Joran aside from the one of van der Sloot and the Kalpoes at the beginning of this blog entry.

Will Natalee be found? It looks less and less likely all the time. I do believe you can't live on an island like Aruba and not realize that the best way by far to dispose of a dead body would be the surrounding ocean. If you enlisted the assistance of someone who owned a boat, and perhaps knew something about the way ocean currents around Aruba work, you could have a foolproof way to dispose of that body. I ask again, I wonder; have boats that left Aruba in the days following Natalee's disappearance been searched for forensic evidence? Don't they keep logs? Have the logs been checked as to whether or not they jibe with logical reasons for those boats to leave Aruban ports?

As I write, Beth Twitty and Jug are on Fox News giving a press conference from Birmingham about the new arrests -- I am reminded as I hear Beth speak that she has, all along, referred to the Kalpoes and van der Sloot as "predators." I believe in one way or another, Beth Holloway-Twitty is right. Predators of the sort that we as Americans are, sadly, far more accustomed to dealing with.

According to sources on the island, along with today's arrest of Deepak and Satish Kalpoe, Freddie ("Locoman Pimp" slow loading time) Arambatzis-Zedan (dark hair - top three pictures) aka badboy_956, authorities will apprehend Jamie Carrasquilla tomorrow for allegations unrelated to the disappearance to Natalee Holloway.

Confusion over Freddy's last name is said to result from naming conventions which can be difficult for some to interpret. Apparently the name of both parents or their family names are taken at birth and Zedan may be Freddy's Mother's maiden name.

The arrests are said to be related to an incident that occurred back in April of this year. There are conflicting stories as to the alleged incident. One local news person is said to have stated that the incident involved a gang rape of an unidentified accuser.

According to statements by Jamie Carrasquilla, he believes the only2_7 event the charges could be related to involves photographs taken of a particular female individual, along with several others, back in April.

The pictures are said to be provocative in nature and were allegedly passed-around, as well as displayed, possibly somewhere on the Internet. At the time, or soon thereafter, one female individual is said to have been upset with the displaying of the pictures and asked the boys to remove and possibly destroy them.

Jamie Carrasquilla, pictured at left, is said to believe that the request was complied with and claims that the female in question, if she is indeed at the heart of the new arrests, has since spent time with many of the boys, even at least once at a party at the home of suspect Joran Van der Sloot.

According to sources, Prosecutor Karin Jannsen has stated only that additional information has led to the arrests.

Dan at Riehl World View has that Fox(TV)reports the re-arrest of the Kalpoes and an individual identified as "Freddie." That individual is known to Dan at Riehl World View as a "good friend of Joran Van der Sloot who allegedly stayed over at the apartments of Joran on the night of Natalee Holloway's disappearance as reported here."

Dan also offers that "some sources are now claiming the arrests or interrogations are related to another potential crime with another victim and not the Holloway case, and that there are two boys along with the Kalpoes now at police headquarters. One is said to be an individual identified only as Freddie, at this time - the other is not known."

A news conference is expected at 10 AM EST(but could be much later).

Larry King gets into the act. He hosts Michael Cardoza (Defense Attorney), Joise Mansur, Benvinda de Sousa, Harris Faulkner, Steve Holloway and Paul Reynolds. The basic comment is that they all believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Larry questions the veracity of the witnesses coming forward with rape charges against Joran van der Sloot. Michael Cardoza provides examples of men preying upon female tourists with the tactics alleged in the interview. However, he doubts that those same tactics would be employed on Aruban girls, claiming that the police would be quick to apprehend them. Faulkner mentioned the sexual ads on the Tickle sites of Joran and the Kalpoes. Faulkner says her staff called Joran at his cell phone which was posted on the Internet at his Tickle site.

Greta was interviewed on Fox News and mentioned sources telling her about wiretaps as the culprit that caught the Kalpoes. She relays stories about rumors of a date rape ring, the fast nature of C&C, and the intent of the arrest is to put pressure on Deepak and Satish Kalpoe. Fox News reported that Aruba had no immunity avenues to break those incarcerated.

Nancy Grace has her Council of Cacklers together. They are in their element tonight, playing Elvis' Jailhouse Rock, as they film Deepak walking. Wiretap reports come in from Harris Faulkner, Eleanor Dixon and Renee Rockwell. Regrettably, it is all speculation. Josie Mansur and Helen Lejuez discount the cacklings. Josie holds to no wiretaps, but he does say the boys were followed by the police. He says the boys were arrested from earlier statements in which they could be prosecuted for sexual assault.

Helen Lejuez claims the new evidence of the rape is what got the boys arrested. She mentions a gang rape and that the boys are members of the gang.

Bethany Marshall suggests the reason for the arrest is to terrorize the Kalpoes into a confession. Another, male, guest quickly sinks Bethany's cackle.

Fox News (Greta) hosts Tito Lacle. Tito goes over the morning arrest. Now, police are not confirming the arrest of Freddie. Defense lawyers were informed that the charge was rape. There were no details on whose rape. Neither the prosecutor nor the defense lawyers would confirm the word murder. Joran's lawyer confirms that many people have come forward against Joran. Joran was accused, officially, of sexual assault by one of these new girls yesterday. Tito says that the police are just collecting rape information. He does not know if this will do anything for Natalee's case.

Arlene Ellis-Schipper feels the police has done some good work and enough to bring the Kalpoes back into custody. Arlene says the Kalpoes have been brought in specifically for the Natalee Holloway case, because the police have acquired new facts and circumstances. Arlene reveals that the prosecution is very secretive and are not allowing the defense lawyers information. She states the court has agreed to keep the Kalpoes for 8 days. Arlene thinks this is a big moment in the Holloway case. Arlene corrects Greta on the tolling thoughts of the case. Arlene says Joran's time clock has not been tolled. Mark Fuhrman feels Freddie's arrests is no coincidence. He feels somehow Freddie fits into the overall picture via some form of collaborating evidence. Mark runs down the Aruban judicial system, as usual. Mark finally figured out that there is no immunity in Aruba. He feels Freddie will squeal on Joran and/or the Kalpoes.

HarryTho 12:31 AM EDT Update:
Fox News (H&C) interviewed TJ Ward and Ricardo Yarzargawry. TJ talks about the voice analysis and how he felt the analysis trigger a kidnapping scenario from Paulus van der Sloot. TJ mentions that Freddie was a name that was passed around when he was in Aruba investigating. He says the police were aware of Freddie. TJ feels that the fourth arrestee will benefit the Dutch interrogators. He believes that a search is still ongoing for a body.

Ricardo Yazargawry believes that the arrest of Freddie could be simply a ploy to confront the Kalpoes with more of their statements. He feels confident that the judge will easily allow Joran to be held an additional 30 days. He claims that there is a sense of frustration over this case in Aruba.

Mai Martinez states that this re-arrest has been in the works for some time. She says that the Dutch Interrogators will be back in Aruba next week. Mai feels that closure is coming in this case.

MSNBC News (Rita) interviews Chris Whitcomb, a former FBI agent, feels anyone in jail is a benefit to the case. He agrees with the Twitty-Hollway group that something in their prior testimonies energized this sudden arrest. He feels that overt surveillance was employed on the Kalpoes. Chris points to a possible error that the Kalpoes may have committed, after they were released. Chris puts in a plug for early FBI involvement.

LOL. It is well known that some on the search team at the landfill in Aruba had become ill from the poor conditions there. The air quality there is not good. Red from SM also had some minor health problems when he returned.

Remember when the new search group (Fred Golba) came out with some statement about Texas Equuasearch having coolers of beer at the search sites? Well earlier SOMEONE using the name JarT posted at RWV that Red had provided them with all the beer. They claimed that the Twitty family was fed up with SacredMonkeys. No proof. Just anti-ScaredMonkeys stuff. This was just a day or so after someone got banned from SM.

Any of this matching up to the un-edited Shango post? Seems like someone decided to change the post...could that be after they read...oh, say...FreeRepublic threads last night?

bolt a lightening, Treuben, JatT, Catriana...or who ever you are today...if you want to host a site about a talking coffeepot, that's up to you. If you think you have some inside track to the information hidden in Shango's riddle don't play games with it...tell someone who can actually use it...like the FBI or ALE. Posting riddles for people to decipher that purport to know the truth about what happened to a beautiful young girl makes no sense. If you truly know something...then do something productive with it. If you are just horsing around (cowboy term) then I think that is kinda sad.

Concerning the ouija board thing, I have an interesting personal story about them.

Back in the 1960's I read a few articles written by Tom Knight, a monthly columnist in one of the electronic hobbyist magazines of that era. He stated that he and some friends conducted some experiments with a ouija board and got some startling results. He wrote that they frequently made contact with a guy who said he had been killed on the beach at Normandy, run over by a jeep. Knight got the story out of the guy a little at a time, and when he got the guy's full name, home town, etc, he contacted government sources and managed to track down the dead guy's military records, maybe also through his family. The name, date, place, and cause of death checked out in the records.

I was fascinated by these articles and rushed out to buy a ouija board set. Knight had written that the boards worked best with a male and female operator, so I called up a married couple I knew. When they arrived I explained all this and said I just wanted to see what would happen. So, the wife and I sat facing each other with the board on our knees, and I simply said "I would like to talk to someone".

The pointer quickly began sliding around the board spelling out "hello". I asked who I was talking to, and other details. We "talked" to a man named John who had been a steamship captain in the 1890's out of San Francisco. I asked him how he died and he answered "lung cancer". I asked him if I should quit smoking and he replied "right now". And so on for about an hour.

The whole time I kept accusing my friend's wife of pushing the pointer around, and she kept accusing me of doing it. We were both barely touching the pointer gizmo with our fingertips the whole time, and that thing was really zipping around the board spelling out words. It was totally eerie.

While we were doing this another friend came over, and he was smirking and shaking his head over how phony it was. I proposed a test. I contacted another spirit, for lack of a better term, and asked this one to tell us what my friend had written on a piece of paper in another room. The answer was correct three times in a row, and my friend had tried to be creative on what he had written on that paper in his pocket.

Well, after that all my visitors were shaking their heads and saying they had to go. They were all pretty spooked by what they had seen, and the subject of the ouija board never came up again during the next 35 years.

I know beyond the shadow of a doubt that neither of us was pushing the pointer thing around, and in fact a few times it moved so rapidly that all our fingertips were off of it briefly until we could catch up with it. It was the most bizarre thing I've ever experienced.

Maybe some day someone will figure that thing out, but maybe some things are just beyond understanding.

North asks if FBI has been seen assisting prosecution -- Helen says according to procedure, they will not be seen, but will be receiving information.
