The Vanishing of Natalee Holloway... Satish, Joran, Deepak, and Freddy
It has been quite a while since I wrote a new entry about the Natalee Holloway case, however I felt I had good reason -- my observations of the news cycle told me that the story was dead in the water for a bit. There was plenty of publicity for it, in both blogs and the mainstream media, so I felt comfortable in my pursuing other stories as they broke.
Today, finally, a new development in the case of the Mountain Brook, Alabama teen now missing for nearly 4 months from the island of Aruba that I, personally, consider highly significant.
This morning it was announced that not only had Satish and Deepak Kalpoe, the Surinamese brothers originally arrested along with Joran van der Sloot, been re-arrested, but also their buddy, Freddy (source: GadsdenTimes.com/AP).
I was able to re-acquire the .jpeg on the right from an anonymous source, whom I can't thank enough. It is the original photo, and the guy on the far right is none other than Freddy. All news media uses of the photo have been identical to mine, Freddy duly cropped off the picture, but now it seems it is probably a good idea to tack old Freddy back on.
So I found something nearly as good, because I recalled clearly what Freddy looked like. I have obviously cropped this photo to remove images of people unlikely to be related to this case, but the diminutive gent on the left is "Freddy."
At the moment it is not even known if the new arrests of the Kalpoe brothers and Freddy have anything to do with the disappearance of Natalee Holloway, but it doesn't seem much of a stretch to think they must. MSNBC has caught one of the Kalpoes heading into the now-infamous Carlos 'n Charlie's bar where Natalee was last seen at the end of May of this year, a striking instance perhaps of the brother in question "not getting it."
Though this is probably an important development in this now most-famous of missing persons cases, at the moment I am sure my faith in the ability of the Aruban authorities to figure all of this out is just as weak as any other American following the investigation.
Here are a few of the so-called developments in the Holloway investigation that I skipped writing about:
* The arm that washed up on the beach in Venezuela... maybe a serious development, at the moment, it doesn't seem so.
* All of the various search parties in pissing matches as to whose highly-trained search pooch has the most expert nose for sussing out dead folks. I realize that these folks truly intend to help the Holloway-Twitty family, but the moment they started dissing each other in the news I vowed to not give them a word of coverage on this blog -- I happened to be waiting for my segment on Fox's The Big Story Weekend (the new photo of me on the right side of this blog's main page was taken by my Mom as she watched me in that appearance), when I heard one of the first salvos in that petty battle over the IFB (earpiece that guests wear that allows us to hear the show and studio audio), launched by the Florida-based team that came to Aruba after Texas EquuSearch.
* A development that may need covering, but I held off; new charges that may be filed against Joran van der Sloot for rape by at least one of three young women on Aruba who either dated or had encounters with him. In Joran's Young Ex I already chronicled the fact that the then-17-year-old van der Sloot had for a time last year a girlfriend who wasn't any older than 14, and the fact that if they slept together it might be considered statutory rape in Aruba... at the time I felt that if she were willing to come forward that might be reason enough to hold van der Sloot if the grounds for charging him in the Holloway case were too weak.
Like I said, that's a very short list -- mainstream media outlets have covered this case in exhaustive detail, to almost comic results at times, but that's their job -- the joy of blogging -- joy being not a very good word for crimeblogging, but oh, well -- is in being a 'free agent' as to what the blogger chooses to write about.
Yet, when I've already written so much about the vanishing of Natalee Holloway in the Aruban night, I couldn't ignore this particular development, and what it might mean.
My theory on what happened? I get asked this question a lot since I appeared on TV, even though my TV spots have all been about the Groene murders and alleged serial killer Joseph Edward Duncan III. If you have read any of my blog entries written at the beginning of the Holloway case you might have figured out my theory -- that Joran van der Sloot beguiled Natalee, both personally and perhaps with chemical assistance. He took her to the beach, with the Kalpoe brothers' assistance. "Something bad" happened there, between the 6'5" athlete Joran and the petite Natalee. Something likely accidental on its face, at least. Joran panicked, and sought help as to what to do with Natalee's dead body. He received it from the Kalpoes, his father, Paul, and perhaps even someone like Freddy, who could be found in numerous photos originally available online with Joran aside from the one of van der Sloot and the Kalpoes at the beginning of this blog entry.
Will Natalee be found? It looks less and less likely all the time. I do believe you can't live on an island like Aruba and not realize that the best way by far to dispose of a dead body would be the surrounding ocean. If you enlisted the assistance of someone who owned a boat, and perhaps knew something about the way ocean currents around Aruba work, you could have a foolproof way to dispose of that body. I ask again, I wonder; have boats that left Aruba in the days following Natalee's disappearance been searched for forensic evidence? Don't they keep logs? Have the logs been checked as to whether or not they jibe with logical reasons for those boats to leave Aruban ports?
As I write, Beth Twitty and Jug are on Fox News giving a press conference from Birmingham about the new arrests -- I am reminded as I hear Beth speak that she has, all along, referred to the Kalpoes and van der Sloot as "predators." I believe in one way or another, Beth Holloway-Twitty is right. Predators of the sort that we as Americans are, sadly, far more accustomed to dealing with.
