prime minister vows investigation 'will not cease'

ORANJESTAD, Aruba - The prime minister of Aruba said Monday that the investigation into the disappearance of a U.S. teen "will not cease" despite the weekend release of the three suspects.

Prime Minister Nelson Oduber, who has previously said Aruban authorities made mistakes in the early part of the Natalee Holloway investigation, added that he could appreciate the "dismay" of the missing teen's mother over the setback in the high-profile case.

"After a summer of investigation, searches and extended detentions the case has not been solved. But the case is not concluded. And we will continue to demand that the search for answers into what happened to Natalee will not cease," Oduber said in a statement released Monday.

The remarks from the prime minister, who is running for re-election this month, are the first since the release Saturday of Joran van der Sloot, an 18-year-old Dutch resident of the island, and two Surinamese brothers.

The prime minister has declined repeated requests for interviews about the Holloway case.

"We want the Holloway-Twitty family to know that we understand and share their dismay that they leave Aruba without the answers they so dearly want," Oduber said in the statement. "I pledge to them that there will be a conclusion."

Holloway's mother, Beth Holloway Twitty, left Aruba for her home in Mountain Brook, Alabama on Sunday, saying she had "exhausted all my avenues" after pressuring authorities since shortly after the teen disappeared on the final day of a high school graduation trip to the Dutch Caribbean island.

Holloway was last seen leaving a bar with van der Sloot and the two brothers, Satish and Deepak Kalpoe early on May 30 - hours before she was to board a flight back home. Extensive searches of the island have failed to find any trace of her.

Her family has often been critical of local authorities, who did not detain van der Sloot and the Kalpoe brothers as suspects until 10 days after Holloway was reported missing.

Twitty said she would return to Aruba on Thursday to pack the remainder of her belongings, and will return to the island in the future, but would seek justice for her daughter from the United States.

"I will not be living in Aruba, but the Holloway-Twitty family will never leave Aruba without Natalee. This is not the end, it is just the beginning," she told The Associated Press by phone from the United States.

Parliamentary elections will be held Sept. 23, and Oduber's governing party stands to lose its slim majority in the face of growing discontent over the rising cost of living. The prime minister said he plans to make efforts to increase tourism and ensure that Aruba is "still a safe and hospitable place for visitors.

Unfair Articles Comparing Hurricane Katrina To Natalee Holloway

The horrific tragedy of Hurricane Katrina and her absolute devastation of New Orleans, Gulfport and Biloxi, Mississippi continues to be unfathomable in terms of human comprehension. The ongoing loss of life, the destruction of coastlines and the destruction of the Big Easy is so tragic, it leaves me feeling helpless and sad for all those people who are suffering down there right now...

There have been some articles written about Hurricane Katrina comparing that tragedy to the Natalee Holloway story. Unfair articles, to say the least. There is no comparison between one life and her impact on the families involved and thousands of families who are either missing loved ones or who have lost everything.

But, the depth of love between what Dave Holloway feels for his Natalee and what each family feels for their loved ones is comparable.

I saw my daughter leave for her classes this morning. She goes to a local college since she lives with me. She had her books in her arms, her hair was pulled back, she was a little groggy from waking up early (anytime before NOON is a shock to my daughter's system of life!) and she gave me a smile as she stumbled out the door. I smiled back at her and listened for her Rave4 to start up. She is not a big fan of classroom academics, but dad is making sure she gets her bachelor's degree. She is my baby. In 18 days, she will be my 21 year old baby.

Natalee Holloway would have started attending her classes at the University of Alabama this past week. She was a pre-med major with a full scholarship to complete the dreams she had of becoming a doctor. Who knows how many lives she could have saved in her profession. Who can comprehend the impact of what her life would have meant to so many families as she matured professionally. It appears that we will never know now.

Dave Holloway is probably a typical American this morning.. He is reading the newspaper and is well aware of the people suffering in his home state of Mississippi. He probably shakes his head as he sees pictures of New Orleans underwater. As a Christian, he has probably lifted prayers for all those families who have lost their loved ones. He knows the feelings they are going through. This is not just a plea from his mind to his Father in heaven, these are petitions from his heart. This is a man who understands unrelenting grief. He has been in pain for three months now asking God to bring his daughter to safety. It didn't take a hurricane to bring him to his knees. There were no horrible photos of his loss. In fact, there was nothing to see at all. His Natalee just vanished. No warning. No trace. Gone. A most unkind of stab wound into his heart from a ruthless dagger of fate. One day his beloved daughter is living her life and the next day...?

Around noon today, my daughter will bounce through the front door smiling proudly that she took another responsible step of her educational life. She will smile at me and say, "HI Dad!" She will take her lunch into her room, check her email, call one of her friends, chat about nothing for an hour and then take a nap. I will hear the melodic strains of "Coldplay" her favorite rock group through the door and know that she is happy and enjoying her life.

As bad as I feel for all the people in Louisiana and Mississippi right now, I know it is relative to what I would feel if it were MY family member. The difference between watching strangers suffer and one of your own, is like comparing an ant hill to Everest. The news of those suffering and dying whom you do not know is terrible news. The news of losing your child is not really news at all, it is personal. Forever. Tomorrow's headline will change the nature of the tragedy for those you have no relationship to; but tomorrow will never change the tragedy for those you know and love.

So, for all of you glib writers out there who are expressing relief that a killer hurricane has knocked Natalee Holloway out of the news, or that there is some kind of "contest" between her disappearance and the story of New Orleans, you are talking about two different planes of reality here. The folks who encountered Katrina are just as important as the sweet girl from Mountain Brook. There was more of them, yes; but, every life created by God is significant. No matter what the color, economic standing, cultural background or standing in their community. I wish none of these lives ever had to suffer or die the way they have. I wish God could have protected and spared them all from harm. All of them, Black, Caucasian, Hispanic, Asian, Arab, Jew, Muslim...all of them are precious and important to someone. Their loss has broken someone's heart who loved them and will miss them terribly.

So, the next time you want to flex your journalistic muscles and think you understand how all news is somehow the same....it isn't.

Because, for Dave Holloway, it would not matter if there were a thousand hurricanes that came through on a daily basis. He would pray for those who met their fate in the fierce winds over the Gulf, but his heart will continue to ache for his baby who will always have his soul. She was never a news item to him so he will never compare the articles about her with anything else that catches the media's eye. She is his daughter. His love for her is far deeper than whether or not she is getting more ink than the latest from Fox News. His love endures. It is the kind of love that a daddy feels for his child day in and day out. I know...

I have a daughter.

Dutch Suspect in Holloway Case Leaves Aruba

ORANJESTAD, Aruba (AP) - A Dutch suspect in the disappearance of an Alabama teenager left Aruba to attend college Monday, while the country's leader pledged the investigation "will not cease" despite the release of the three suspects.

Van der Sloot's mother, Anita, pleaded for the media to leave him alone. "He's a good boy. It's enough," she told The Associated Press. She also expressed sympathy for Holloway's family in the telephone interview.

"I pray for Natalee and the Holloway-Twitty family and I'm still convinced she is alive," she said.

Aruba Suspect Arrives in Amsterdam

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) -- An 18-year-old Dutch man who had been held by police on the Caribbean island of Aruba in connection with the disappearance of an American tourist arrived in the Netherlands on Tuesday.

Joran van der Sloot and his father arrived at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport, ignored questions from reporters, and quickly departed. The 18-year-old was to attend college in Holland, his mother said.
