I work with a number of Europeans and have contacts scholars in Europe. Your assessment of English is spot on, it is the lingua franca of the world and it doesn't matter if we Americans know 1 language or 5, everyone else is learning English.
To show you how prevalent English is, not only are the journal articles in my field in English (which means that if you want to keep up w/the research from around the world, you have to read English), but research units and even academic programs have switched from using their native language and now use English as their common tongue. So, if you are a Dutch student taking a masters degree at a Dutch university, you may well have to do it in English. Especially in the EU, it seems it is just easier for everyone in academe to use English when they get together.
I'm still learning Danish tho; might as well have something to fill my time when I'm not FReeping.

Do you think maybe our loose culture and dress, coupled with our naivete, are perhaps not appropriate outside our country (and sometimes in it?)? The world is a different place. Some of those underworld types in other countries probably look at our daughters like pieces of meat, and frankly the way some of them dress helps them visualize it all too easily.
I saw a svelte neighborhood teen on her way to a party last night in a NEW slutty style; have you all seen this one? Her spaghetti strap top was quite long enough, no midriff, BUT her mini skirt started at low plumber cleavage level. Thus through her thin white cotton shirt could be seen two mounds of buttocks squeezing out of the top of her skirt deliberately. Covered, yes, but showing an awful lot of junk overflowing the trunk.

American culture isn't as loose as France, Italy or Amsterdam with it's red light district. Joran comes from a country where his peers are a heck of lot looser than their American counter parts by a long shot.
Did anyone hear the report on CNN about two hours ago that Jug Twitty said if any of the three are let loose tomorrow he is going to tell what he knows and it is horrible?

Actually, my son has been to europe a number of times, and he said everywhere he goes there are people that want to practice their English on him. Including the french.
Promise you, whatever he has to say about Aruba, will not be shock & awe to me.
Because it means a better job position.
That's why I cannot understand why there's so much Spanish pushing here. Even in Mexico, they want to learn English!

Dutch law does not punish wrong-doers in the way that they do in the U.S. For an adult (not a minor like Joran) that commits the equivalent of 1st degree murder, the sentence would be less than 20 years, of which, the defendant would serve approx. 14 years. In a case like this, if convicted, the Kalpoe bros. may be looking at 6 - 8 years. Joran, since he's a minor, he may only be looking at serving until he's 21 yrs. old. IF they are convicted and that's a big IF!!!
Ditter, I agree. That was not wise of Jug to say that, but I assume he feels he is protected, and knows what he is doing. I wonder if Geraldo knows what this is all about? Hummm?
