Frist Threatens Jail for Terri [Schiavo] Judge

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist said Friday that subpoenas issued by Sen. Mike Enzi compelling Terri Schiavo to appear at a March 28 congressional hearing made it a crime to disconnect her feeding tube - and threatened anyone who interfered with her testimony with jail.

In a statement issued by the majority leader's office, Frist said:

"Federal criminal law protects witnesses called before official Congressional committee proceedings from anyone who may obstruct or impede a witness’ attendance or testimony."

"More specifically," said the Senate's top Republican, "the law protects a witness from anyone who - by threats, force, or by any threatening letter or communication - influences, obstructs, or impedes an inquiry or investigation by Congress.

"Anyone who violates this law is subject to criminal fines and imprisonment," Frist said.

Additionally, I don't know anyone who WOULD want to live this way for 15 years.

Terri wouldn't have had to have lived this way for fifteen years, if the HINO hadn't blown half a million dollars of her health care trust on lawyers he hired to try to kill her, rather than therapy and care.

trapped in Mt. Lebo.......... no wonder you're looking into the Birchers! ;-)

You gotta get out into the fine old North Hills ---- old 150 year old oaks, cold fresh water ponds, and none of those Mount Lebanon socialist/liberals.

It sounds like you aren't aware that the Schindlers admitted under oath that they were well aware that the doctors had told them that there was NO procedure or therapy that would help Terri. None.

President Bush included, of course.

Dear Nurse Rachett:

So sorry to hear that it was hard to feed them by hand. Have you tried dog and cat feeding dishes yet? You could puree their food into a liquid and set the dishes on the floor. Then the patients can simply slurp it out, with no hand feeding required. The ones that can't slurp will eventually just go away. After all if you can't slurp, you can't burp! (Ha Ha) Just a thought.

So now the Catholics and Episcopalians aren't Christian? Huh. Good to know.

BTW, even the Baptist churches are okay with Living Wills. But maybe they aren't Christian either.

Just a pragmatic citizen who loves President Bush and my country...and who wants the Right-to-Lifers to get in the back seat and STFU. The grownups will let you know when we get there.

Wow, I've never noticed your posts before. Have you always been this nuanced and well-mannered? Do you have a dog in the abortion fight or do you just think religious people are embarassing idiots? I'll bet that you have a very interesting philosophical framework governing your conservatism.

Bless your heart.

All FReepers, it's Palm Sunday. I appeal to all to ask not our own opinion, but what does God say about this? What would Jesus do? How about Ghandi? Mother Teresa? Hippocrates? Albert Schweitzer? Solomon?

If we re-frame the debate into a perspective of Culture of (Sanctity of) Life vs. Culture of Death, it would seem that FIRST we would seek to give nourishment to someone like this. It would seem that before we would 'pull the plug' we would also give access to OBJECTIVE PEOPLE who have no vested interest in Terri's life or death. It would seem--consider the amount of money invested to save seagulls and sea lions contaminated by tanker oil spills--we would make effort to rehabilitate somebody who has the fight, the spirit, the will to live.

Absolutely it is foolish--and costs increase geometrically--to try to continue human life to the 'cryogenic-and-hope-to-thaw' extreme. There are some who have been kept on life support whose brain (I am recalling from memory, not citing cases) had practically liquefied. This isn't compassion--this is denial. HOwever, I do NOT believe Terri is in this predicament. I believe there is a conspiracy among Greer, the HINO etc. to snuff this woman.

No matter your personal belief or mine--no matter what the real truth is: On this Palm Sunday, please, I ask all FReepers, let us seek to lift one another--and this discussion--up, not let it be sullied with personal attacks. Indeed this is an emotional issue. Let us all pray to God for wisdom and pray for ALL our leaders, elected and appointed, through somehow, God will work out His will. God is still sovereign; this is STILL One Nation, Under God.

Grace and Peace to all.

There are several exceptions to the "Sanctity of Marriage"; for instance, it can be waived when one spouse attempts to murder the other.

It can also be waived by an overt disclaimer--like openly shacking up with another women and starting a new family.....among others.

Choosing to die before God takes you is suicide, which is the only sin that cannot be forgiven.

God is all-powerful, and can forgive any sin He wants.

Can you give me a link to that "law" and/or "statute?"

She is indeed PVS which means medical decisions have been placed on her husband, not congress, not the general public.

The diagnosis was flawed, based on CT scans and a 45-minute consult. Neurologists who have learned how this diagnosis was made have been shocked. One called it 'criminal.'
