Not so ‘Free Republic’: The Shot Heard Around the Net
The Conservative Voice ^ | Feb 11, 2005 | by William Gheen, President, Americans for Legal Immigration PAC

Posted on 02/11/2005 10:55:36 AM PST by Jim Robinson

The shot heard around the Internet has been fired on FreeRepublic.com The owner Jim Robinson and his moderators have launched a sniper style purge against members that disagree with the President’s ‘guest worker’ amnesty or support more control of illegal immigration. Free Republic is an amazing tool for those looking for a good debate and news from around the country.

The problem for the administration of the site is that their creation is allowing the participants to learn that the Bush immigration record and plans are shockingly out of line with the views of most conservatives. The management’s answer to this conflict between the majority of conservatives and the influence of the White House on their Web site has become electronic executions and censorship.

Members and readers of Free Republic would be surprised to know that many members of their community have fallen silent on the discussions about illegal immigration lately because free speech is an illusion on FR.com. They are silent because they have been banned from the Web site without warning, cause, or explanation in most cases. For weeks the moderators have been suspending and banning new members that chimed in quickly on the immigration debates.

Now this trend has broadened as the first groups of long-term users were suspended or banned this past week. Although Robinson and his staff removed many members of the Free Republic community in the first few days of the purge, those that religiously support President Bush’s immigration plan, open borders and approve of public benefits for illegal aliens remain on the forum. Those that were banned were the members that wanted more done to control illegal immigration and a strict observance to the President’s Oath of Office.

Well ... 4,152 + 48,323 + 65,535 (the limit) + 50,795 +19,427 +14,776 +6,037 +7,761 +8,086 +6,172 +3,318 +6,249 +7,008 +7,779 +6,598 +6,002 +8,595 +7,320 +3,253 (and counting) = 287,186 Hobbit Hole replies.

We maxed out one thread for the sake of doing it... more recently, we've been asked to limit the size of threads to around 5,000... and we try to do that, though sometimes we get to talking and neglect the time ;~D.

You can, but you'll be labeled a racist xenophobe.

That's over the top and you know it.

"What's wrong with that? Everyone benefits."

As long as they pay their taxes.

That one was not the first to reach the limit, you know... only the first one to reach it only using spam. ;~D

The Hobbit Hole was first, followed closely (within a week) by one of the Neverending Story threads.

How about a $5000 annual fee for the Guest Worker Visa?

You may have said this at least partially tongue-in-cheek, but you have hit a truth most Americans don't seem to realize - the dollar value of living in the US.

It is a real very tangible dollar value the rest of the world understands. In India, for instance, I have read that the dowry to a future husband is doubled if he possesses an HB-1 visa.

But who should benefit from the country that we and our ancestors have built? If living in the US has that sort of tangible dollar value (and it does), shouldn't the citizens of the US be receiving that money? Instead our government hands out that valuable asset for free and saddles the taxpayer with any expenses associated with a new resident (legal or illegal).

Oh, I certainly agree that the Hobbits are friendly and polite; and I wish them no ill will. But the evidence is overwhelming that, once you fall into that Hole, you'll only reemerge on rare occasions.

We of the UT (Undead Thread and progecny) OTOH, live to just expand the thread.

There is honor bestowed upon those who get doubles ('00), triples ('000) and the very rare quads ('0,000')

Dead Corpse has the uncanny ability to score those more than anyone else (he also got the covereted Last Post). But we are pretty sure he has a time machine, but one limited to a few seconds (sort of like a reverse TIVO). Or at least that is my theory.

Obviously day laborers and short term "employees" don't pay federal income taxes, whether they are immigrants or not.

But anyone working full time for all but the smallest of employers will be paid by check prepared by the bookkeeper and a record will be preserved for tax deduction purposes. Withholding taxes have to be withheld and paid to the government or the employer could end up in very serious trouble when he got audited. The IRS has formulas for estimating the labor costs of all types of businesses. They know what percent of gross receipts are average for roofing businesses, pizzerias, auto repair shops, landscaping companies, bakeries, etc... If you deviate too far the computer kicks out your tax return for an audit. The government may not fine you for hiring illegals but they will send you to prison for not withholding their taxes.

By and large a very reasonable bunch. Reasonable meaning folks who think and use their brains as opposed to the "folks" over at DU who are neither reasonable nor use their brains (if that's what you call what happens to occupy the space in their collective skull cavities)

In that case, and since we waited nearly a decade to immigrate legally to the United States while illegal options were available to us, my actions make a liar out of you.

Be a man, and speak to me when speaking about me.

"Actions speak louder then words."

And if that's the case, and considering that it is YOUR job to stop the flow of illegal entries into our country, any immigration problems that we have in this nation are a result of your ineptitude.

Now, let's all watch you play the victim.

Oh.

I would love to see some of the over-the-line posts...without the names. I don't need to know who said what, but what and how things were said. Once they are zotted & banned, we can't see those posts, right?

We don't have open borders by any stretch. What we don't have is sealed borders. And no country in the world does. The closest anyone ever came to it was on a very local basis with the Berlin Wall. A little over a hundred miles in length.

Even it was breached quite a few times.

We can't possibly seal our borders. How many thousands of miles of unguarded coastline do we have?

Give me a few thousand dollars and I promise you that I can enter any country in the world illegally and without their knowledge.

The only way to prevent illegal border crossings is to remove the incentive for doing that. Make legal crossings attractive, and illegal ones less desirable. It's the only approach that can work.

That is the cheapest shot I have ever seen from a FROBL. I thought you were out of grade school, Luis.
